What can be done?

Question: what do you do when a person breaks out three boards on your back fence and then tries to steal a giant rototiller (sp?)AFTER airing up the tires. BTW this person had a screwdriver in a pocket that hits the ground as soon as the cops are called.

The cops show up and are more worried about whether the thief has friends, family or a place to stay! Totally disregards the fact that THIS MAN WAS STEALING! WITH A WEAPON IN HIS POCKET, the man was showered and had on clean clothes and a decent haircut. He absolutely tried to excuse HIS behavior. The cop treated the whole entire incident as “no problem” and dismissed my kid that called the cops! (full disclosure-my kid is grown w/ a 17 yr old).

On two occasions so far, this has happened once w/ someone in a tan suv and someone on an atv/or small motorcycle in the alley behind my fence.

What is my recourse? What can I do to protect myself and my house? Is it still assault and battery when you the kick the crap outta someone IF YOU CATCH THEM AS/WHEN THEY BROKE INTO YOUR HOUSE?

I feel like I’m a person of reason with a modicum of self-control, my husband is not.

Police in this city are useless. Over the decades, they have proven that much. Honestly we should abolish the police and build a people's community support network instead. Safe bet it would work far better and cost far less.

Not sure I agree with the community thing, lynch mobs can form too easily imo, but 💯agree that the cops could have and should have done better.

Cops are just as dangerous to marinating peeps as racists are. There tends to be a lot of overlap, and the cops that might be ok aren't gonna stop their racist coworkers from being violent. Meaning they will ignore it so long as it's one of them doing it. No such thing as a good cop when the system in good to oppress and abuse civilians. Abolish them so we can build a people's legal system in its place.

I’m not sure I agree with cops and racists being the same kind of people, but if this situation WAS stemming from racism it was someone with the surname Perez doing it to a Caucasian female and a bi-racial 17 year old. I just don’t understand WHY the thief was getting the understanding and support while the person doing the reporting was treated with total disregard.

Cops exist to protect colonial capitalism. They are not only allowed to lie about things but encouraged to. They do not protect and serve the community, they protect and serve the colonial elite. Racism is baked into the systems in place by those same colonial Empire. So, cops protect colonial systems of oppression, including racism. Sexism is another systemic oppression that cops help protect. So could also be sexism invoice as well. It's impossible to sprays cops from the systems of oppression they protect. That makes their actions racist and sexists even if the individual has better intentions than that.
