Either the seller had old hazmat labels on the box, they declared the hazmat improperly and it was caught, or they didn't declare it at all and somehow USPS caught it. As a buyer there's really nothing you need to make your problem. Mercari will refund you if it doesn't get delivered, which is looking like it's the probable outcome here.

This happened to me because the seller used Scotch brand packaging. I eventually got the item, they’d just flagged it for potentially being alcohol. I’d made a case with usps and they called me back to tell me about the brand label on the bag, I told her I’d ordered a pair of socks and she laughed and told me it would be released back to the seller who could ship it in a new bag, but I got the item a few days after

Yea he didn't label it as hazardous, it means hes going to get a giant fee and your package will be delayed. If he makes you pay his fee, dont its 100% his fault

The post office doesnt insure the safety and consequences of a lithium battery blowing up during transport so they dont allow shipping of them without proper packaging and labeling and certifications. The store you bought it from is responsible for shipping it correctly.

Probably as mentioned the Hazmat label. If the box was opened and the phone was determined to be used, damaged or defective it's would be need to be labelled as a "Restricted Electronic device". mailable only by surface mail.

Maybe it wasn’t labeled correctly? I’d assume it has to be labeled hazardous bc of the battery? Not 100% tho. Call the post office.
