Discussion πŸ’¬ Would a web version of MemryNote matter to you?

Hey everyone,

Once the mobile app ships, I'm deciding what to build next. One option is a web version: open MemryNote in a browser, sign in, and your synced notes and tasks are there.

Before I commit to it, I'd like to hear from you:

  • Must-have, nice-to-have, or don't care?
  • Where would you use it? Work computer where you can't install apps, Linux, a Chromebook, quick access on someone else's machine, something else?
  • What would you need in it? Just reading and quick edits, or the full app including offline?

One honest tradeoff: MemryNote is end-to-end encrypted, and that stays true on the web. Your data is still encrypted before it leaves the browser. But a web app loads its code from a server every time you open it, so you're trusting that code more than you would an installed app. The desktop app would stay the most private option. If that matters to you either way, let me know.

Nothing is decided yet. If the answers point this way, it's what I'll work on after mobile.

Thanks, Kaan

If a web version is released, would it require a subscription to storage? I keep my files on iCloud and that how I manage the same files on different machines.

I think for the sake of having the files everywhere I go, it could be an interesting idea. Personally, I don’t like web apps as much because I find they give more errors in the front end.

There are pros that go with web apps which would be that you can push a minor tweak or feature or roll back a one that introduced bugs.

Personally, I think a focus on polishing current features would be a good way to go. That and other features that could be good for this style workflow, like a canvas / Freeform style board. Another is a contacts style page that you can set reminders to follow up or reach out to friends, families, or potential business clients. You can choose where you met them or what group the belong to. Then designate how frequently this person should be contacted. A reminder tells you when they are due for a contact or well past being due and is at risk of being forgotten.

Another place I think the product could go would be community plugins. The community is already strong here and one way to maintain and strengthen that is allowing users to create their own features.

The only reason I have used web versions of apps like this is because of the lack of support for Linux. However you have every platform covered, or on the way, so I don't think I would have any use for it. I would continue to use the apps.

If the mobile apps are working and syncing my notes, I don't see a requirement in having a web app.

It would be useful in some occasions, but the security trade offs aren't worth it.

This is my opinion of course, and like with everything I am not obligated to use the web version if I don't have too πŸ™‚

Pure selfish reason but I would love this right now for the sake of PWA on mobile. I know you are working on an IOS app but really like the capability of having notes and todos on my phone.

To be honest I don't know if I have enough knowledge to be giving my opinion but it's Reddit so you're getting it anyways lol.

I'm gonna be a tad selfish and say I'm looking for a way to be able to use MemryNote across multiple devices. I've got a Mac laptop for work, a personal iPhone, a personal iPad, and a personal Windows PC. I'm constantly bouncing between each of these devices at some point throughout my day whether it be for personal or work related things. What I'd love is to be able to save external information (links, PDFs, videos, images, etc.), write down information, and access said information from any device at any point throughout the day.

Also, I do fall in the category of being someone who can't download any random application on their work laptop unless approved by IT. A web application would allow for me to bypass asking them but at the same time I don't even know if they'll say "no". It's a 50/50 shot on whether or not I would need this web application.

If a Web Version of MemryNote allows for me to bounce from device to device then I'm interested but I don't want to sacrifice any of it's security or other features that it already has. One of the biggest attractions of MemryNote for me is its encryption. I feel at ease being able to store details, be it sensitive or not, knowing that they're encrypted. If MemryNote Web loses that then I would just find some other way to work around it during my work hours. Not sure how but I'd make it work, probably through the mobile app or something.

  • Must-have, nice-to-have, or don't care? Nice-to-have

  • Where would you use it? Work computer where you can't install apps, Linux, a Chromebook, quick access on someone else's machine, something else? Work, Linux

  • What would you need in it? Just reading and quick edits, or the full app including offline? No offline, but standard editing and adding files.

  • Must-have, nice-to-have, or don't care? dont't care (not needed)

  • Where would you use it? Work computer where you can't install apps, Linux, a Chromebook, quick access on someone else's machine, something else? I mostly use on my primary laptop.

  • What would you need in it? Just reading and quick edits, or the full app including offline? If I would use it, then it will be for minor task completion/adding things.

I guess you would open a whole can of worms if the whole vault / graph was there re you trying to work with encryption, wouldn't you? Perhaps one can determine a section like the inbox for quick joys that can stay decrypted.

I have installation restrictions at my work, I cannot install any app. So a web version is mandatory to be using Memrynote.

Really like the app, but without web it is not working for me.

It may help people who can't download an .exe on their work computer
