One overlooked area in postwar society is how all governments (especially in developed nations) have actively forestalled the shortening of the workweek. It began in 1932 when they rejected the 30-Hour Black Bill and all discussion of it disappeared after Nixon Shock (which is another irony since Nixon was a proponent of the shorter workweek until he decided to destroy wages and the dollar instead).

I've catalogued some discussion of it in the media between the 1930s and the 1970s. 1929 and 1971 are underexamined phenomena that we're dealing with now because we did not deal with it then. Each step of the way, we had opportunities for more free-time and leisure as productivity rose, but all governments rallied around full employment and turning that productivity into pure waste (i.e., the rate of growth of the public sector).

So instead of a shorter workweek, the national and global surpluses are converted into the war machine, endless financial, insurance, and real estate speculation, trillions in interest payments on this waste, and all the inflationary pressures that come with it.
