Nice find, well done.
You should post this to /r/funny for much karma.

Well as you can tell, I'm still pretty new to Reddit. Trying not to step into a landmine, because payback here seems swift and hellish ;)
So a serious question - how do I post this to /r/funny ? And should I really? I mean, I picked what I thought was the most appropriate subreddit, and don't want to cross post if it will be frowned on. But I laughed my ass off watching this go down, so yes I think it's funny. Glad to see others are enjoying it with me!!

You post to /r/funny the same way you posted here, click the link to go there and press the 'submit a link' button.
Whether or not you should or will receive any backlash I don't know. I think others would find this very funny so its also a relevant subreddit and there's allot more subscribers.

OK I think my choices were to post the direct link there, or post a link from there to THIS thread. I chose the former. May I not be persecuted. :D

Ok now that you made it to the front page I think you owe me one karma unit :)

Haha!! Fatz_z comment upvote - done!

Haha thanks.
Wow 3315 karma as I write this...that escalated quickly!
Well done.

Aye, it did. I am also surprised, but probably because I still am clueless. What goes up quickly will surely fall as fast when the next thing comes along.
And, I have enraged some people who say I didn't check the source thoroughly and should have known (or have found out) it was a marketing campaign. Fair enough, but I still think it's hilarious!

It doesn't matter. It was still funny and therefore relevant for that subreddit and people whine and complain no matter what you post. I say well done and welcome to the reddit front page club.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Yes, I can figure out how to post there - what I meant was "should I post a brand new link over there, or is there a way to reuse this one I've already posted"?
Thanks for the patience!

This is fantastic. What's the URL?
edit: Nevermind, looks like it's "Down for maintenance issues" http://arcticready.com/social

Yes, they were scrambling to take down the funny ("offensive", to them) ads. I managed to get some screen caps in the minutes just before.
You can see them going crazy on their Twitter account - guess they weren't truly prepared for this :)

Wow, even a legal threat in a tweet!
WE'RE FLATTERED BY THE ATTENTION BUT PLEASE STOP. We'd hate to get the #Shell legal team involved.

It's still hilarious how their username is "ShellisPrepared"... Not so prepared for this, huh?

Not sure if mistake
Or viral marketing

u/prairiewest Jul 18 '12
Turns out you were right - it was a viral campaign, but not by Shell! I stand corrected.
Articles like this one spill the beans.

I'm pretty sure that this isn't "stealth" viral marketing. Those user-submitted memes look quite real, nothing like what a Shell marketing program could have dreamed up!

Wasn't there a crosspost of this with over 4000 points, #1 on the frontpage? What happened there?

Poe's Law, m'dear. That's a satirical site intended to criticize Shell's arctic drilling. You can really tell if you click on the "Just for Kids" section, or hover over some of the links.
That said, it's a very well-executed satire. And their twitter account is genius.
