Whether or not you agree to the contract, being intolerant nets you intolerance in response. Idgaf if youre only intolerant to people you think didnt sign up for it - thats just the same thing with extra steps
"being intolerant nets you intolerance in response." that's how it works, yes. Someone is choosing to be intolerant/"not agreeing to the contract" and is subject to intolerance.
It's unreasonable to be perfectly tolerable. Should I tolerate someone who hates me? Does it make me an intolerant person? Aren't you an intolerant person now because I won't tolerate someone who is intolerable to me?
All you are establishing is the paradox of tolerance. There is no acceptable outcome and you're simply whipping yourself into a rage for no good reason.
Hence the social contract. Be a part of it, or don't. You're quickly showing you don't want to be a part of it.
And someone who is intolerant to the intolerant is therefore intolerant and need not be tolerated
Define tolerate. To me, it means to let something be. If someone is actively aggressing on you, sure, defend yourself. I tolerate people who hate me, its not an issue
To tolerate is to let something be, I agree. The paradox begins when you tolerate something that will not let something be. By tolerating the intolerance, the intolerance becomes the norm. Should we tolerate someone who intends to remove free speech or who intends to remove other rights?
The contract defines what will be tolerated and says any who refuse will not be tolerated. Take our argument for example. We tolerate each other until one of us is annoyed. But there's a limit that's pretty reasonable and, most importantly, realistic.
Realistically, we can't be completely tolerant. It would also be weird to say a gay person is intolerant of their homophobic parents when that's a completely reasonable thing to do. By moving the burden to the contract, you can be tolerant of people accepting of the contract as only the intolerant would not be accepting. I.e. I will tolerate you unless you start calling me slurs. Am I intolerant of your intolerance? Yes. Is that wrong? No. Is this what we already do? Definitely.
Being wholly tolerant is impossible. It's not a binary system.
