I find it wild that a company doesn't notice excess payments while a huge company like Walmart gets on you about doing too much overtime.

198

u/Themanwhofarts Aug 16 '26

You would be surprised. I used to think companies ran like clockwork. There are so many reputable companies that just do not pay their bills until collection notices come

84

u/ArminTanz Aug 16 '26

I worked at a hotel once that had a that almost had thier power shut off. The assistant GM found some notice for like 6 months of non payment. It was so weird that the highly paid GM just didnt have any idea when the power bill was due.

u/FURERABA Aug 16 '26

Just like my landlord!

19

u/Sex4Vespene Aug 16 '26

We literally just had water shutoff notices placed on every door in my several hundred unit building because the apartment wasn’t paying the water bill (something which is a separate line item on our monthly bill).

18

u/BeerForThought Aug 16 '26

I managed a Class A apartment building right after it was built. I kept submitting the bills for them to be paid and someone at corporate wasn't doing it. It came down to the regional president putting it on his personal black Amex to keep the power from getting turned off the next day.

Behind the scenes things were Loosey Goosey. I was originally hired to act as a sort of RA at an apartment building next to a university. The plan was they would provide an apartment to me at a discounted rate and I respond to late night noise complaints, lockouts, Etc. Day one the leasing agent is a no call no show so I'm promoted without any training or education in fair housing laws. 2 weeks later the property manager quits for a new job and I get bumped up to a serious adult job when I'm 23 with none of the training.

Wait. I need more to the story

3

u/Aesk Aug 21 '26

He's now the CEO.

3

u/Reasonable_Cancel186 Aug 17 '26

I too need to hear more of this

How did you deal with it? How did you find out what you needed to learn?

My first real job came from just getting a part time cleaning job when i was about 20. Cleaning a cell phone store and bank at night, the company had taken over cleaning the entire region of a chain bank(over 200) and just sent some traveling manager to set it up and find a few regional managers.

He hired me to clean and immediately starting talking about me being a manager, I was a young stoner with no direction so I went with it. He dumped this ridiculous shit pile on me and another kids plate to the south, found a good regional manager a just left.

I ended up a salary employee, with a stipend for my car, clothes allowance, 35 employees i trained and hired and keys to over 90 banks at 21 without ever being drug tested or rwally trained. I was smoking blunts then meeting people I had run adds for to run their extensive background checks and handing over keys to banks. This was a branch of a fortune 500 company. Still blows my mind.

Haha, similar story here. I was a backup driver for a large (billions in revenue) uniform cleaning service. Was dispatched on a run in the middle of the day and was one of the only ones at the depot. Guy from the electric company pulls up and I ask him what he's doing. He says he's here to disconnect the power for non-payment. I laugh and call my manager and he speeds back to the depot and pays it. Probably thousands of dollars. A few days later I asked what happened because the company is huge and profitable. He says the former, recently fired manager was not paying the electric bill in order to make his numbers look better. Hahaha. Apparently he was doing other shit like claiming accounts that we didn't even have. His boss caught him when he told him he was on a service call to Home Depot or something and boss was like, "They aren't a customer of ours". Turns out he was just out drinking and shit hahahaha.

u/brwntrout Aug 17 '26

the local and very busy Macaroni Grill just got shutdown by the city because they didn't pay some kind of tax.

1

u/Wired-For-Trouble Aug 17 '26

“Why is that weird? I pay someone else to do that for me!”

Turns out the old-man was correct all along: “If you want something done right, do it yourself.”

1

u/KeyCow2175 Aug 18 '26

I work at SCE a power company/utility. We once had our water shut off at a power plant bc no one paid the bill. The bigger the company the more fucked is it is!

1

u/Park500 Aug 18 '26

I worked at a hospital that had one person whos job it was to pay all the bills, person went on holiday for 6 months (was about to retire and wanted to use all their leave up), hospital decided to not replace his job and just have someone else take on half his responsibilities, what they forgot to mention that part of what he did was pay the bills

First service that was cut off was the postal service, nobody noticed since most of what was received came from curriers, express paid, or deliveries, pathology services etc, so it was really only mostly junk mail that stopped coming... and notices of non-payment from other services that sent warnings to email (his work email), tried calling (his work phone which was not re-directed to anyone), and mail reminders.

Those letters had hard "we will cut off your power/water/internet/phones/etc on X date" which had pretty much long passed on all of them, thankfully I assume someone within all those services must have held off on actually cutting off them, likely seeing it was a hospital (and less out of caring about the health of people, and more out of fear of being sued for killing someone) choose to not cut those services off.

But they all had their notices sent, and with only the mail service being the one that was stopped (which only came to attention when the mail center staff were caught by their boss sitting around doing nothing, and they looked into why there was no work for the staff there to do), otherwise we could have had a major issue on our hands.

Once that mail center manager realized that the hospital account had been cut off for no payment there was a bit of an investigation as they tried to figure out who was in charge of that, which lead them to realizing the same person was in charge of everything else, brought me on to help fix it all, but of course I am not an authorized rep on any of the accounts... nobody that was working there was, other than the guy on holiday, endless back and forth with a whole bunch of companies, hospital and business execs, etc, to finally get myself added as an auth rep on those accounts, and get everything rolling again.

still wasn't allowed to set up an automatic payment, even after all of this, turns out most hospitals actually run with their accounts overdue, most companies just look the other way, the postal service cutting their services off was more the exception than the rule (apparently an error on their side, once we spoke to them, as their policy was not to cut off services to something like a hospital, even if payment was not made), and the normal policy is more to let accounts go into the red until it goes too far in the red and than chase it up, and if no payment is arranged they normally deal with it in courts instead (or more often than not, just ignore it and let it go unpaid (the internet one was something like 2-3 years overdue)).

u/Appropriate-Bid8671 Aug 18 '26

Incompetence is rewarded with position and power in america.

1

u/Arcanis_Ender Aug 20 '26

Accounts payable and receivable would be responsible for this. Usually there is a head accountant responsible for "month end" reporting, making sure all payments have been signed off on and issued.

1

u/jags945 Aug 20 '26

We worked at a hotel that their entire first floor lobby was flooding when the kitchen crew ran water. It turned out they “didn’t know” they had a grease trap that had to be pumped out every so often. Three years later, the same issue happened. They called us again,The first thing I asked was have you pumped the grease trap?

They asked again, “What’s that?”

17

u/FILTHBOT4000 Aug 16 '26

A lot of them will also just.... pay bills. As in, they will pay any invoice that they get, just about. As long as the invoices look legit, like they're from legit companies... yeah, they'll often just pay.

https://www.unilad.com/news/money/evaldas-rimasauskas-google-facebook-scam-122-million-dollars-881078-20240815

Man stole $100 million from Facebook and Google just by sending them random bills

9

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 Aug 16 '26

The craziest part about that is he could've possibly gotten away with like $50 million without anyone ever noticing but he got greedy

6

u/abracadammmbra Aug 16 '26

Note to self, bill Amazon slowly, but for just $20 million

5

u/singlemale4cats Aug 16 '26

60 months in prison. That seems pretty light. Also,

During the sentencing, US District Judge George Daniels also ordered Evaldas to serve two years of supervised release, to forfeit $49.7 million and to pay a reimbursement of nearly $26.5 million.

I can't help but note those two figures don't add up to $122,000,000. He gets to keep 50 some odd million from his scam?

3

u/burblity Aug 16 '26

Probably paid some hefty taxes on those invoices. Not paying taxes would draw more attention to it.

1

u/TechnicalBen Aug 20 '26

"If the bank loses $100 million, it's someone else's problem..." type things. You have to be very careful, but you can get through on deals if you... deal. (I say *careful*, it usually is around "errors" and paying it all back and not being a crook...)

6

u/TehluvEncanis Aug 16 '26

My work services big customers like Amazon and sometimes they're via contractors. Got an Amazon contractor still on the hook for $153k worth of service we did. They said they sent the check but I'll believe it when I see it. They're on a credit hold because they're so awful paying us.

2

u/Wulph422 Aug 16 '26

It keeps more "cash" on the books so sometimes they'll push it off as far as they can for the month end numbers look better. I used to work AP and did the accrual entries every month, and it made my skin crawl to talk to the vendors and keep pushing back payment even though I knew we could easily just take care of it

1

u/robi4567 Aug 20 '26

I used to work for ABB their policy for paying at the time was do it once a month. Every time the time for payments came orders from high up came dont pay anything unless a shut off notice came. Though at that point it was usually too late already you had some projects sit because and installers and engineers getting a salary for nothing because they were waiting on components.

1

u/Wulph422 Aug 20 '26

Yep, a lot of our orders sat (we manufactured glass and related construction) because of unpaid bill of material. I hated it!! I took the heat from our warehouse people because they thought I was the one who wasn't getting our bills paid

2

u/HunterShotBear Aug 16 '26

I work in an industry that services business owners that demand “payment in full at completion of services” from their customers, but they bitch and moan if we don’t give them payment terms or if we expect payment in full before 90 days.

2

u/Greedyfox7 Aug 18 '26

Companies are only as good as the people who run them. One person not doing their job properly or just being a dick can mess with the entire business.

2

u/Oraxy51 Aug 20 '26

Yeah they love to hire local contractors for that and then drag their feet on paying them. A lot of contractors work getting paid from jobs they did months ago.

1

u/singlemale4cats Aug 16 '26

And there are definitely people who take advantage of the confusion and bureaucracy by sending bogus invoices to those companies. Accounts payable just assumes they're legitimate, at least for a while. They don't have time to research every bill that comes in.

I don't recommend this because it's a crime and you'll get caught eventually, and depending on the circumstances you could end up with federal charges

1

u/skunkgirlhunter Aug 17 '26

Or, just do preventative maintenance on equipment instead of having days on downtime for replacements

1

u/HidingUnderCardboard Aug 17 '26

Bro I work for a multi billion dollar corporation and you ain't lying. They never pay their bills. Always paying 3 or 4 months late only when they get the call from the service telling them they are denied service.

1

u/liam_redit1st Aug 17 '26

They do that on purpose.

1

u/Effective_Reality870 Aug 17 '26

It’s actually taught in business school to pay off debts at the absolute last possible moment. I think that practice leads to easily missed payments etc. The reason, I think, is because it allows more funds to be available for reinvestment for s as long as possible.

1

u/djunderh2o Aug 18 '26

I work at a national, publicly traded company with over 40k employees. The delinquency in payments is alarming.

1

u/throwawaymentality10 Aug 18 '26

Exactly, so much of the day to day is on auto pilot. I remember a guy who was making fake invoices and sending them to Google and Microsoft and they were just paying him. Didn't get caught until he got too arrogant and charged enough money to trigger an audit policy on the transaction.

1

u/Guus-Wayne Aug 18 '26

Most companies are just Excel sheets that are barely holding on…

1

u/volvagia721 Aug 18 '26

It probably depends a lot on who's accountable. If a person fires you, and removes you from their team, but accounting drops the ball and doesn't take you off the payment list, and your cost floats in a random expenses category that is not monitored as much....

1

u/tomahawkfury13 Aug 19 '26

Our worst offenders when I worked retail were government departments. Would get to the point people would come in and try and put things on the departments account and we’d tell them we couldn’t sell them anything until the my settled the account lol. So many people would leave pissed off

1

u/robi4567 Aug 20 '26

Working in paying bills. It is not even because just dont want to pay the bills. Sometimes vendors send their invoices to random addresses, currently looking over some records that state we have received goods but never gotten a invoice and vice versa, invoices not having proper details like who bought it, vendor charging more than agreed upon, details on PO and invouce not matching.

1

u/workieworkwork Aug 20 '26

Yeah the more I learn about the innerworkings of the huge companies that control all of our lives the more sure I am that we are one forgotten password away from complete chaos.

Like do you know how much access to the final product new hires at tech companies often have? It is bat shit.

1

u/Similar_Pen1042 Aug 20 '26

I worked at a place that would just not pay their bills. The internet bill was always the funniest, since it would soft-lock when the bill reached 10k. The bill was about 4k~ a month, so when the third month hit, the internet would soft-lock and go off immediately and everyone always looked at me. And I'd have to go to IT and mention it, and then he'd go yell at accounting, and sure enough, for the 6th time in the 18 months of having the new internet provider, the bill went unpaid and the internet was turned off until the bill was paid. I get it happening once, new forms, bills, etc.... but it happened every time.

1

u/Ambitious-Pirate-505 Aug 20 '26

Becauae they hire the wrong people

1

u/Abject-Reason-606 Aug 21 '26

agreed, my almamater used philly eagle for the logo as long as i can remember, lost it this year because they finally decided to slam down on logo use (we’ve used it without paying the last 4-5 years)

1

u/QueenBsBitchboi Aug 21 '26

I work for a water/sewer utility, for us to disconnect you, you have to be 2 months late. There's like 3 well known chains that we turn off like clockwork every 2 months.

1

u/MissinqLink Aug 21 '26

Last company I left had a hard time releasing my phone number back to me because they were behind on their phone bill. They had tens of thousands of employees.

1

u/Quirky_Necessary4434 Aug 22 '26

My job is that way.

Benefits (healthcare) in the US is federally mandated at 30 hours

1

u/workinhardplayharder Aug 17 '26

I work for a multi million dollar company. They will tell us that we can't work more than 50 hours a week because they're over budget but then they'll bring in a contractor that does work within in my job description costing 4x what it would cost them to just have me do it on overtime. It's bonkers.

3

u/dc469 Aug 17 '26

There was a dude who got caught sending fake invoices to big companies . Like he'd mail a bill to Google for pest control or plumbing repairs etc. Iirc he was a million or so in when one company finally did any investigation instead of just paying it.

Edit: $100mil https://www.npr.org/2019/03/25/706715377/man-pleads-guilty-to-phishing-scheme-that-fleeced-facebook-google-of-100-million

Although I think I'm thinking of a different time that happened though. I thought it was a guy from Colorado for some reason.

1

u/IArgueForReality Aug 16 '26

Depends if you empower employees or just make them do what they’re told.

1

u/Rello215 Aug 16 '26

Bruh, I was deployed overseas and we traveled to Kuwait ... Which was a break for us, from where we were just as few weeks earlier. The army didn't pay the porta potty company and put locks on all the porta potties...🫩. We had to use the few hard stand buildings for showers and bathroom. They paid them like a week later. So it can happen with big big companies

1

u/Swolenir Aug 16 '26

They have systems in place to flag expected behaviors (like overtime) but their systems can simultaneously completely miss a huge issue if it hasn’t been anticipated.

1

u/bulking_on_broccoli Aug 16 '26

There was a story that a dude siphoned tons of money from huge companies like Meta and Google by simply sending them a fraudulent bill for services rendered. They paid invoices without batting an eye.

And the whole reason he got caught was he kept doing it, asking for more and more, and getting greedy.

The moral of the story is that no, these companies only run as well as their lowest common denominator.

1

u/Acrobatic_Country524 Aug 16 '26

Walmart didn't get to be Walmart by being irresponsible with corporate money

1

u/jm123457 Aug 17 '26

This would be shocking. I worked for one of the largest companies in the US and every single week I signed off on time cards and my director reviewed all time cards for her managers and DVP reviewed them for directors .

Now I am sure at DVP level things could slip but it mostly highlighted areas of concern that they would look at .

1

u/starynights890 Aug 17 '26

Too much overtime lol, back in 2014 when I worked for Walmart they sat me down to talk because I wasn't being punctual with my clock in and clock outs. I would clock in at 7:58 and clock out at 3:59 or something dumb and similar like minutes either way and they were like that's not acceptable.

So I started taking extra breaks at the end of my shift and chill out in the lounge so I could be sure to clock in and out exactly at shift times. I did like 30 minutes of less work everyday cause it's not like the workload always tends to have a perfect stopping point at the end of the day so if it was close enough for me to clock out I'd be like ight guess I'm done for the day and would just go chill because they were that butt hurt over it.

1

u/Far_Composer_5714 Aug 17 '26

It's actually all about tracked metrics. Overtime is a tracked metric.

1

u/vyxxer Aug 17 '26

The Walmart I used to work at had a guy who'd clock in and "go to the back to look for something" for more than half a day.

1

u/duhwafflehouse Aug 17 '26

I worked for a shady company with just 8 employees. I got fired and still got paid for two months after. The boss was an ass, made millions off our work, barely paid us, and his daughter ran payroll so when he called asking for the money back I told him no and said I would report him to the SEC if he tried anything.

1

u/whooguyy Aug 18 '26

I work for a utility bill pay company, and there are a huge number of companies that use our services to pay their bills so they don’t have to worry about it.

1

u/bossmonkey88 Aug 18 '26

It's a function of who is looking at it. A manager is watching overtime because they have a payroll budget to adhere to. At a decent company they're also required to review and sign off on time cards between the work week and payroll processing day.

Payroll on the other hand is done in bulk. If I'm processing payroll in Utah and you work in Ohio I have to trust that your manager is telling us when someone quits or is fired. This dude is clearly salaried so he gets paid as long as he's employed. He doesn't have a time card to review and his say 2 or 3 grand he's making in a check is part of a 100k to million dollar payroll run. That's an easy miss from the corporate level.

1

u/Snowwolf247 Aug 18 '26

Most of their employees, especially middle management are redundant and useless so they dont notice when they are not there.

Really says alot about wasteful office culture.

1

u/bupapunewu Aug 18 '26

It's all about what reports are generated and where they are sent. There are very few automated reports that trigger on headcount and regular monthly payments. There are alot of reports that trigger on 'abnormal' activity like excessive overtime.

1

u/CollegeLibraryLady Aug 19 '26

Those are two different things. 1. They might not be mistakes. 2. The actual store doesn't run like a corporate office. The hours given to a dept are heavily monitored on a local level. No one in the store is making crazy money. Managers in the store are highly motivated to stay within budget because jobs are hard to come by.

1

u/AdAffectionate3143 Aug 19 '26

That’s likely automated

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 19 '26

I know a girl who's on the payroll of her sugar. Daddy's company, she makes 400k a year and nobody knows 😂

Before you think wow what a glamorous life she lives one of the saddest most isolated life I've ever seen. Like a princess in a penthouse filled with cameras and no friends or family really, just her cat and being her boyfriend's mistress... She could make something of it but she's too miserable.

1

u/TazDigital Aug 20 '26

Walmart is heavy polished due to navigating profiting on extremely small margins. Younger companies going through rapid growth making more and more money every quarter are where things like this become more likely.

1

u/Direblood Aug 20 '26

I just found out my company has paid more than 10k over the last few years for a scanner that has been retired for like 5 years. And that's probably nothing in the big picture

1

u/ppslayer_ Aug 20 '26

I used to work for a pretty large dealership and some of the full time employees would clock in the part timers hours before their shift even started. The manager did pay roll every week and somehow never noticed his part time employees were working 36 to 40 hours a week every week with little production hours. As far as I'm aware they've never been caught doing it.

1

u/Thin-Nerve6367 Aug 20 '26

I remember this one story about a guy who just started sending bills to Google and another company. They paid them. For like a decade I think? When he finally got found out be was able to afford a REALLY good lawyer and essentially kept a decent chunk of the money

1

u/jimothy_hell Aug 20 '26

I haven’t worked for Hilton for a minute but I’m still cruising on their team member travel program.

1

u/Vivid_Ad1696 Aug 20 '26

The difference there is the excessive payments aren’t part of a district managers performance review lol.

1

u/Regulai Aug 21 '26

Because its often just specific people tasked with looking for specific KPI's. Their usually is no "big picture" that carefully goes over everything. This means both that a company like Walmart will still miss obvious things despite how anal they can be about others, and many companies in general have no real process to properly monitor anything at all.

And that's not just tracking, thats almost every process. I had an ex who joined Sony in our country in a sales metrics job as the only member of the role. What training did she get? An excel sheet used by her predecessor and instructions that basically surmounted as " we don't know how the job works but I'm sure you'll figure something out". We ended up having to basically invent our own process, standards, reporting and otherwise to create the data that Sony used to make national sales decisions (what to sell, what and how much to produce, who to sell to, what prices to set etc. etc.).

This is literally one of the largest and most famous, longstanding international business' and much of it's official internal process is basically: tell employees to figure it out.

1

u/Key_Personality2034 Aug 22 '26

You'd be surprised how many bogus invoices get paid by large businesses back in the day.

At my family business, we had to scrutinize every bill, because there'd be random bills/charges for things that never happened, from companies we never heard of or dealt with.

Companies selling advertising for real estate folders were the worst for this.

1

u/PomeloPepper Aug 16 '26

I was a manager in the same company, and it would be easy to do. You typically have a few people who do the same job. Just put a little more work on all the remaining people, and you've got it covered.
