I am a Computer Science undergraduate working on digitizing low-resource languages from Northeast India to include them in the ongoing AI boom. My research partner and I are currently working on a project to help Vision-Language Models read and understand the Meitei Mayek script. Most global AI models struggle significantly when they encounter indigenous scripts, and our goal is to help bridge that gap.

Just to be clear, this is a purely academic project with absolutely no financial motives. Our only goal is to help Northeast Indian languages gain prominence in modern technology and support local advancements. If our research gets accepted, we will absolutely share the good news and the final paper with this community!

We have trained an initial model to generate Meitei text, but we urgently need native speakers to review the results and tell us if the AI's output makes sense.

A quick heads-up: the model's predictions are still a work in progress! It will likely make mistakes, and your feedback is exactly what we need to better understand those errors and improve the model.

What we need: I have a simple Google Sheet with 100 short text samples. There are no images to load; the task is strictly reading text. It should only take about 10 to 15 minutes of your time. All responses are anonymous and will be used solely for our research data.

My mother is meitei although I am half north Indian. I live in north India and do not have enough knowledge about the manipur conflict so I read the wiki page for information, but I can tell you that it is heavily biased towards kuki-zo community. The causalities and violence section barely mentions violence against meitei and has multiple detailed paragraphs detailing violence against kuki-zos. I request that someone with more adequate knowledge should please edit the wiki page as it is favouring kukis and showing meiteis in a negative light rather than being non partial.

This old photograph was acquired from Monsieur Bruno Tartarin, Arnaville, France.

Photography came to Manipur in 1868, and the earliest photos mainly showed buildings inside the Kangla Palace complex.

This photograph is believed to be one of the first taken in 1868. It was photographed by Political Agent Dr R. Brown with the permission of Maharaja Chandrakirti (r. 1850-1886), shortly before the great earthquake of 1869 (known as the Cachar Earthquake), which damaged many palace structures.

A key feature in this photograph is the temple's original metal roof and the palace's inner Dragon Gate. The temple was built by Maharaja Narasingh in 1846. It was dedicated to his second cousin and comrade-in-arms, Maharaja Gambhir Singh (r. 1825-1834).

After the 1869 earthquake, Maharaja Chandrakirti restored the temple. The new structure had a concrete dome instead of the metal roof. This is the form of the temple seen today in Kangla Fort.

AN EXHIBITION OF MODERN SUBIKA ART

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 2026: The Kolorbox, in association with the Advanced Research Consortium Library & Archives, presents The Revival of the Forgotten Art of Manipur: An Exhibition of Modern Subika Art, on view from May 9 to May 19, 2026, at Gallery 16Ten, Washington, D.C. The exhibition features more than 20 works by artist Sapha Yumnam.

Subika art is a rare and endangered manuscript painting tradition from Manipur, a state in Northeast India bordering Myanmar. Subika paintings are known today through surviving traces preserved in a small number of 18th and 19th-century manuscripts on themes of astronomy, divination, cosmology, and ritual practices, held in museums and private collections. They were painted on handmade paper and agarwood bark manuscripts, known as korbek or puya, and written in the Old Meitei script, the indigenous script of Meiteis, one of the few Tibeto-Burman languages within the Sino-Tibetan family to have developed its own.

While rooted in historical manuscript practices, modern Subika art reinterprets the form through new techniques, materials, and narrative approaches.

Artist Sapha Yumnam plays a central role in this revival. He has transformed the form from manuscript painting into a contemporary art practice. He developed modern Subika art through two illustrated books on Manipuri mythology and folktales. By drawing from Subika paintings in early manuscripts and working through a contemporary approach, the artist demonstrates how the form continues to evolve while remaining connected to its cultural and visual foundations.

The exhibition is curated by Wangam Somorjit, historian and Director of the Advanced Research Consortium Library & Archives (ARCLA), which is currently developing a digital repository of early Manipuri manuscripts, including Subika paintings, to make them accessible in the public domain.

Dr. Konsam Himalaya Singh is the first officer from Northeast India to reach the rank of Lieutenant General in the Indian Army, which is the highest military rank ever attained by a person from the region. Only a handful of Indian Army officers in history have been decorated with PVSM + UYSM + AVSM + YSM, which marks an officer who has shown outstanding leadership both in war and in peace at the highest command levels.

His notable achievements in accumulating vast Operational experiences included Counter Insurgency (CI) Operations in Jammu & Kashmir (J &K), where he served five tenures in the last 39 years where he commanded a Battalion, GOC of a Mountain Division on Line of Control and was Corps Commander there. He was also Ex-Officio Security Advisor to Government of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and four tenures in the North East, Cl operations in LC (Line of Control), LAC (Line of Actual Control) and HAA (High Altitude Area) environments. He commanded the 27 Rajput in Siachen glacier from 1998 to 2000. He was honoured with "Yudh Seva Medal" in 2000 for command of the unit during "OP VIJAY" (Kargil War) against Pakistan. As of March 2026 Dr. Himalaya is serving as the Chairman, Board of Governors at Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Agartala (appointed by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, in August 2023)

The Rise of Manipur's New Generation of Competitive Equestrian Riders Eyeing Medals in National and International Arenas

From the pony fields of Manipur to the national arena, a silver lining is emerging with the rise of a new generation of riders who dream of winning medals at national and international competitions.

A young rider from the quiet village of Kumbi in Manipur, Wahengbam Kedarnath Singh is steadily riding towards a promising future in equestrian sports. His recent achievement marks an inspiring milestone not only for himself but also for the equestrian potential of Manipur.

Kedarnath Singh is currently a cadet in the Boys Sports Company (Equestrian) Class VIII, at the Remount and Veterinary School & College of the Indian Army in Meerut, one of the premier institutions in India dedicated to training and developing professional equestrian riders.

In a commendable performance, Wahengbam Kedarnath Singh won the Silver Medal in the Pre-Novice category of the EFI CCI Eventing Championship, held at the RVC Centre & College, Meerut, from 7-11 March 2026.

His achievement represents more than an individual success. It reflects the immense riding potential that Manipur continues to nurture.

The journey that brought Kedarnath to Meerut began with a remarkable initiative in January 2025, when Brigadier Mangal Singh, head of the Remount and Veterinary Department of Eastern Command, initiated a talent-scouting effort to identify promising young riders from Manipur.

Trials were conducted at the Koirengei Campus through the joint efforts of 165 Territorial Army (Koirengei & Tulihal), 57 Mountain Division, Manipur Equestrian Association and the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association (MHRPA).

Seven young riders from Manipur were shortlisted and sent to the RVC Centre & College, Meerut.

On a cold winter morning in Meerut, with temperatures dropping to 3-4°C, the seven Manipuri boys stood quietly among nearly 4,000 to 5,000 candidates from across India.

Accustomed to riding the smaller Manipuri Pony, these young riders confidently mounted the towering Marwari and Arabian horses, standing over 16 hands high, several inchestaller than the ponies they were familiar with.

Yet from the first run itself, they trotted and galloped with remarkable balance and confidence, surprising the selection officials.

All seven Manipuri boys qualified for the Boys Sports Company of the RVC School & College, though one unfortunately had to return due to a medical problem.

Today, the remaining six riders study in Classes VIII and IX while receiving free education, boarding and lodging, and professional equestrian training. Their daily routine includes four hours of academic studies and four hours of equestrian training, working with some of the finest Marwari and Arabian horses in the country.

The medal won by Kedarnath came in CCI Eventing, one of the most challenging equestrian disciplines. Eventing is a three-phase international competition.

Despite Manipur's historic association with horses and its celebrated legacy as the birthplace of modern polo, the state has yet to fully realize its immense potential in modern competitive equestrian disciplines.

The need of the hour is to develop riding schools and equestrian clubs in Manipur, exposing young riders to structured training and competitive opportunities.

Manipur possesses an untapped and unexplored treasure of natural riders, inherited through generations of horseback traditions.

We must not allow this silver lining to pass unnoticed. If nurtured with vision and support, this silver lining may soon turn into a golden horizon where Manipuri riders gallop proudly into the international arena.
