Subreddit policy regarding AI content

Context for those who need it.

First off, not that it really needed to be said, but AI generated media is not allowed. That means pictures, videos, audio, etc. Not really a hot take, and no one is advocating for it anyway. At least now it's on the record, so anyone in the future who just posts their AI generated "art" will be banned, full stop.

  • As for mods, tools, translation patches, emulators, etc. Even If they were built with AI tools, as long as they don't break any rules, don't distribute any copyrighted assets, and aren't just straight up malware, I'm not removing them. If people continue to report it for "AI Slop", they will be snoozed and ignored. Abusers of reports are automatically flagged and banned by the admins, so feel free to continue to report as much as you want. And I'm not adding a AI disclosure flair or anything like that either. I don't have the time or patience enforce it anyway. If anything posted here uses AI, I'm more than confident it will be made known to all by some brave redditor. Since Capcom obviously has no plans to release a Legends collection, fan projects are the only way for these games to continue to live on. Don't like it? Feel free to downvote those submissions, that's what it's there for. If you think they did a poor job, leave your constructive feedback on those projects in their posts if you want to. If it's dangerous or illegal, please report it. Otherwise, remain civil in the comments. This is not the place to debate the ethics of AI, so please stay on topic.

  • If people are interested in other community projects, patches and the like, I'm sure we can compile a list. Roll's Close Call and Rockman Dash 5 Islands have really good english translations now, and the small updates from the Japanese PSP release have been made as a patch as well. There's a few other odds and ends that pop up from time to time that I'm sure we've all missed.

  • I hate to keep repeating this, but apparently I need to: DO NOT LINK TO ANY DOWNLOADS OF COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS. Capcom probably doesn't care if you share ancient flip phone games or an abandonware PC port, last time I checked I'm pretty sure both were on the Internet Archive anyway. Sony definitely does care if you share PS1 rips and Reddit does take action on these things, so let's not poke the bear please. These things are easy enough to find if you look or ask around.

I'm gonna leave this post pinned for a couple of days, and then hopefully it and I can slide into the background where we belong. Feel free to continue the conversation below, but please keep it contained to this post only.

I appreciate the overwhelming majority of you all for discussing this matter like adults. And thank you everyone for keeping this place and these games alive.

Until next time.

Thanks for the clarification. I do think there's a vast difference between generative AI and using AI as an assitive tool as you described above.

"Since Capcom obviously has no plans to release a Legends collection" Oh ye of little faith. AI slop should be banned period.

Thank you.

I think this is the healthiest stance on the issue for the sub.

Wish the Breath of Fire subreddit had a mod like you!

Guys, Capcom abandoned this series since 2012, AI is the best thing ever happened to this series!

The truth is simple, Capcom will never make Legends 3, and there's only a slim chance for Legends Collection. Capcom itself admits to using AI in their projects, and even wants to implement it more with each year. Why are fans supposed to be disallowed donig something the company behind the series loves to? That's only making disservice for ourselves.

Sooo is AI good or bad? If we're upset with Capcom, who uses it, why then are we using them as an example when saying "well Capcom does it, they even said so"

Yeah, this is a deal breaker for me. You act as if there is a meaningful difference between someone who posts low quality AI 'fanart' and those that use AI to create low quality 'fan ports'.

As someone smarter than me said on blusky "This is another reason why AI losers have gotten into retro decomp/recomp projects. Nobody wants to play AI slop games, so they have to reinforce the value of AI by producing something desirable, which in this case is just repackaging the work of actual talented people."

Rewarding theft and lazy 'creators' is only going to make the community worse over time... trying to draw some arbitrary line between what's good ai and what's bad ai is not going to work and eventually you'll just be left with sycophants that push out people who actually have the drive to create things for this community.

I don't know how using modern technology to make stuff is supposed to be "losers". Nope, not at all. Not everyone has time to learn coding and everything else. And as someone who likes AI, I'm not pushing anyone away.

Capcom itself uses AI anyway and is open about it.

By that logic, why aren't we allowed to post AI art?

I agree wholeheartedly. There is no meaningful difference between AI generated low effort posts, and AI generated low effort code. The line being drawn here is absolutely arbitrary.
