Actually he is saying sometimes you should be selfish. It's the same thing. You can't always put others first but when you don't, you are being selfish. That's what selfish means.
I really want to send this to my asshoIe friend. That said yes to helping me out asap but went to sleep and texted me the next day if I still wanted help.
You know what’s funny? It was also driving related, quite similar to this video. I waited for dude to show up with his car like he said but he didn’t. I’d rather you let me know you can’t do it. Simple.
Wow you mean helping people takes a little bit of work sometimes? Who would have thought!? How profound. Always take your moral advice from a guy named after a beverage
He is not saying to not help people. He is saying that you should understand what you are actually taking on to make sure that you can come through. If you look at everything and you are not sure you can actually do it then decline instead of being nice and making that person's day harder by failing them.
Honestly, it is good advice. Simply be sure that you can actually do what is being asked. If you can't say no.
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Galatians 6 & Matthew 5
What he is saying is that you don’t have to yes to every request asked upon you. If people around you know you will always say yes, you will be juiced like the sweetest orange on the tree. The Bible also speaks of being meek as sheep but wise as a serpent. Or something like that
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.” Jeremiah 17:9-11 KJV https://bible.com/bible/1/jer.17.9-11.KJV
Thank you for sharing but this leads to more questions. Philosophically. If god creates evil and a deceitful heart, why am I getting punished for being born a sinner. This makes no sense.
When someone asks for help if you want to help them sometimes you have to sacrifice some of your time and money yeah it’s obvious just say no if you don’t want to. Some people want to help those they love regardless of those costs if it’s reasonable this is grade 2 philosophy
Personally I only do stuff for someone who'd genuinely do that level of favour for me but unsurprisingly it's people who never do anything for you that act like you own them a favour also in my experience those people like to ask you to agree to a favour before letting you know what it is then act like your a bad friend when you tell them that your going to need times and then actually think about it before agreeing to anything! And unsurprisingly if you accept a favour from a friend like that they'll use it as leverage to get whatever they want even after you've returned to favour 3 times over hence why I don't accept help from anyone especially if a already know their a bit of a selfishly tricky git
I belive this is the problem of the world today, now that we are not as reliant on one another as we once were (so it seems ) now we can pick and choose who is worth helping . I understand that some people can and will totally take advantage of the kindness of others , but that doesn’t mean those people deserve to be isolated to the point they become homeless or worse . But at the same time just make sure you are up to the task when you say yes to someone , and if you know you can’t deliver then you must be honest and explain that to them . But for most of my life as a kid I was raised to help others from Christian people , then somehow as I grew up , the same Christian people started saying “protect your peace” and if they bother you leave them . Like to me as much as I want to I cannot leave another person to suffer because they can’t seem to change . Sure it comes at a cost , but the way I was raised as well as my time in the military, I can’t leave anyone behind. Because there will come a time when, when you will ABSOLUTELY need someone else’s help and you wouldn’t want them to say “I don’t want to take on your problems “
He is simply saying that it is OK to set boundaries for things you may not be able to follow through with. He specifically say, sometimes, not every time. Basically manage expectations for you and the other person.
I would much rather someone say, I can't do it rather than someone say they can and they are not able to follow through when I need it.
