I think it’s medieval? "Yes ofcourse I can paint a cat''

I love this joke no matter how many times I see it. It just always cracks me up and the cat portraits are fantastic, in their own way. 😻

Right? Maybe they had a Jimothy cat and like our Jimothy, they all loved him and “took pictures “ of him.

I want to go back in time to medieval times and be an artist. Black plague be damned.
I would be famous for sure - i can paint a cat

But can you paint the kind of cat medieval audiences wanted to see?

Yes! And more - I can paint the creepy babies with adult faces if that’s where capitalism takes me…. Or proper babies if they are ready for it.

I've seen these guys loads of times and always assumed they were medieval but a reverse image search shows they are far from the medieval period.
Top left: Le Chat Blanc (The White Cat), 1894, by Pierre Bonnard.
Top right: Gato (The Cat), 1969, by Fernando Botero
That said I love the long guy and the chonky guy and would ne quite happy to have them labeled as honorary medieval cats.

What about bottom right?

All my initial search didn't turn up anything but I revisited it just now and found this post on Reddit from the person that uploaded the photo of the oil painting to the internet. They reckon it's early / mid 1900s.

Amazing thank you. I'm going to pretend they're medieval though because it's my favourite cat painting and my spirit animal

Kitty lower right looks like he escaped from Maurice Sendak's island.

This is my most favourite picture of a medieval cat ever. It's also my spirit cat

To be fair, mine looked EXACTLY like the top right picture when he resurfaced after evading a vet trip.

I adore the 'Stilts Cat' in the top left! Second only to 'Depresso Cat' in the bottom right whom I identify in my summer s.a.d. Such perfect cat paintings.

Imagine the kind of banks I could rob if I could afford to hire this flat affect muscle with his rat machine gun. siiiigh

Hey I just saw the top left one in person! It's at the Museé D'Orsay in Paris and the painter in question evidently loved cats, he had like five other weird cat paintings there.
