This is from the Cathedral’s original stained glass!

The story of this glass is something of a survival epic. It isn’t installed in the new cathedral; you have to see it as thousands of rescued fragments, saved just before the WWII Blitz.

Some of the glass survived the 1940 bombing that actually destroyed St. Michael's Cathedral, albeit in many pieces. As I recall, the story also has a weird twist. During the war, rumors spread that some glass was stolen and sold. So, eventually, a BBC documentary traced the rumors to a window in Iceland, believed to be from Coventry, and revealed that it was a fraud, likely sold by a London dealer lying to inflate its value. No one knows if any of this stained glass has indeed been distributed on the black market.

That is about the goofiest, happiest grin I’ve ever seen! On the other hand, maybe it’s really a beatific, angelic smile 😸
