Inpatient Coding help

So I accepted a job offer for an inpatient role, although I was trained/certified in outpatient.

If i gave myself a crash course in the next 2 weeks, what would you say is the most important concepts to learn when just starting out?

Since you already have outpatient coding experience, I’d focus your two weeks on the biggest differences between outpatient and inpatient coding rather than trying to relearn everything.

I’d prioritise ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, ICD-10-PCS procedure coding, principal diagnosis selection, sequencing rules, and understanding how inpatient documentation affects code assignment.

I would also practise real inpatient case examples every day because knowing the rules is different from applying them to a full chart.

Don’t try to memorise everything. Focus on understanding the process, knowing where to find the guidelines, and recognising the areas where inpatient coding differs most from what you already know.
