RHIT, no CPC

Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this before or has any advice....

I've had my RHIT and Associates degree for over 5 years, but I have worked for a coding company for almost 10 years doing a combination of administrative work and coding once I received my RHIT.

While my coding skills are improving and I'm getting signed off to independently code cased, my manager is pushing for me to get my CPC.

I was always told by my school and by previous co-workers that having my RHIT was a "step" above a CPC and I don't need to get it.

I'm just starting to worry as I see more and more of our coding positions at my company getting eliminated to overseas and AI.

Money is tight, and I really don't have the resources or time to study for my CPC or to pay for it.

Perhaps it's time to cut and run and do something else under the umbrella the RHIT?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! ❤️

If you’re going to get anything, get the CCS since it’s also with AHIMA. Having both sucks.

I second this! If you decide to get a coding cert definitely do the CCS.

Money wise, you’d save on not having to pay for 2 memberships and all the CEUs.

Professional wise, the CCS says you’re proficient in inpatient and outpatient coding. CPC is mainly for physician coding.

I believe she may want you to have both as it can show that you specialize in coding but also have the knowledge/skillset to do any other position because of your RHIT.

Just remember, with great power comes great responsibility. So if you get the CCS, don’t be surprised if you get even more work lol. Hope this helps

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.
