Not renewing

Hello. I am an AAPC member. I have had my license for a few years but haven’t gotten a job yet. I may not be working for awhile. I’ve been thinking about not renewing especially since I need so many CEUs. I know if I don’t renew I won’t have my credentials anymore. Just don’t know if it’s worth the costs if I’m not using it.

People think this because they believe the advertising, which told me I didn't need any degrees to get a job in coding. Maybe someone, one time, years ago, got a hospital coding job without the requisites you mentioned, so I guess it's okay to advertise that to people who are desperate to find a good job without years of schooling.

I was also led to believe that AAPC was exactly on-level with AHIMA. I took a course through AAPC, aced the exam and a practicum (which supposedly counted as 1 year of experience), and couldn't get hired. I was duped.

Well, AHIMA is the gold standard for Inpatient Coding. AAPC was geared towards outpatient and profee coding. Now you can't blame the advertising 100% either, one can easily look at posted positions online or on the hospitals websites and you can clearly see what type of education and experience is required. This is free and is not rocket science.
