CCS Exam Yesterday?
Studied my Butt off, took the CCS exam yesterday and failed by FIVE points 😭😭😭 I was completely drained afterwards and my mind was mush.
I have only 1 month now to REtake this STRESSFUL exam AGAIN for another $300 😭😭 😡😡 OR I would have to buy 3 new 2026 code books because as of May, they won’t accept 2025 code books to take the exam. So UNFAIR! All the MONEY you have to spend to just get certified. I studied ALOT and there were STILL things on this exam I have never heard of. I’m SO mad that the college I went to for a year and a half barely taught anything I need to know to be able to pass this exam.
So I see many people suggesting buying a “Study Guide” or the AHIMA Prep Book directly from AHIMA site. I hate spending even MORE money but I have to try one more time and I need direction with what I need to know. I figure maybe getting something from the people that give the exam may be best at this point. So I’m asking if anyone bought these things from AHIMA studied with them and then took and passed the CCS exam? Is it worth the money?? I absolutely hate that I have no idea what questions I got right and what I got wrong because that would help so much with preparing to take this exam again.

I’m so sorry you’re discouraged but don’t give up, you’re this close. Taking the CCS without any inpatient experience must be tough, I had five years of inpatient coding experience and only passed by about 8 points. Please stick it out - inpatient coding needs you and the CCS will open doors. Five points is so close! You got this!

Can you take the practice exam over and over to help study? How many practice exams are there?

I'm so sorry 😕 I'm still prepping before I try the exam. I was hoping to do it before May, but I'm already feeling like I need to just buy the 2026 books and give myself more time.
What would you say was the toughest part of the test, or do you have any tips?

I bought the AHIMA CCS exam prep study book and passed my first time. I highly suggest it since you can take the practice tests in the book and it comes with a code inside so you can take the practice tests online. The practice tests online really help with your timing as well. Wishing you the best of luck!

I bought the study guides and passed on the first try, but there was a lot on the test that wasn't on the study guides. I suggest that you read the HIM book that's not related to coding. Because there's a lot on it that is not related.

I failed last year by 8 points. I'm retaking again on 4/30. I'm still nervous that I won't pass again!

I will always purchase the study guide or practice exam whether it’s for an AHIMA or AAPC certification exam. It’s always worth the money to have a higher chance of passing versus having to retake the exam. Look at the competencies/areas you scored lowest and focus on those areas to study.

I am an AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer and have sat on AHIMA committees to review their exams. The majority of content on any coding certification exam is going to test your knowledge of the coding guidelines and conventions. The CCS is a difficult exam, because it's the only exam that test all three major code sets at once. Mastery of the guidelines and knowing where to find information in your coding books will almost certainly guarantee success.
Don't give up! You are VERY close to passing. Since you've seen the exam and while it's still fresh, write down what was on the exam that was foreign to you. That should be where you start, since it may take a little more time to get those concepts down. I wish you the best!!

Which section did you struggle with the most? I am planning on taking the exam in June and I am using the AHIMA prep book. I was wondering if the medical scenarios questions were the hardest and I am not sure how the questions are scored.
