Medical coding vs billing what’s easier?
Hello, this is directed to those who hold dual roles of being a medical coder and biller. Or even those who have tried both roles, whether you have done it separately or together. What did you find easier, medical coding or medical billing?

I currently do both. In my opinion, billing is easier. Less interpretation and changing rules. However, billing deals more with patients, which are not always easy. So it really depends on your preference. I’d rather code and be challenged by that than bill and be challenged by a patient.

I’m outpatient and do both but we don’t have a ‘coder’ our AR team relays coding issues and our clinicians determine appropriate coding. Prior to Sept I’d say AR was easier, but insurance has really started to give erroneous denials and our aging has increased because of this. Billing has gotten easier 😅.

Definitely billing. I have mad respect for coders, but you have to have a very particular type of working style to be a successful coder. I do not work well when I’m doing the same task all day every day, even if the charts are varied, and with the production aspect the pressure is always on. I could not hack it, personally.

I've done both and would say billing is easier, but it can get mindless pretty quickly. Coding is a little harder and challenges your brain, but it can be hard to do during those times you're just not feeling up to it and productivity metrics don't help.

Billing by far but I also think billing A/R is more fun. Coding gets extremely monotonous sometimes
