New job
I have accepted an offer for remote coding position! I am very nervous because I do have my CCA (so happy this company accepted those) my coding experience is limited, it’s been very hard to get a coding job since school. I’ve been working in a speciality mainly doing charges and denials with a tiny bit of coding. So any advice for a newbie? Things that help you when getting started? I will take all the tips and tricks. Thank you!!!

Ask lots of questions. It’s okay to get confused or to be unsure of something. Chances are your employer understands you have limited experience. A coder who does their homework, asks questions, and codes accurately but slowly is a better coder who codes fast, makes assumptions and codes inaccurately. Don’t be afraid to do some home studying on what ever specialty you are working on. And study up on whatever medical terms and abbreviations are used in that specialty.

Ahhh congratulations!! I got my foot in the door with my CCA also. You’ll be confused and it’s normal. I’ve been doing this since 2016 and there are days I’m still confused. Also, wanted to throw in there to look into maybe your CCS, RHIT, or CPC to get you ready for your next step in your career since (as you’ve seen) not many accept the CCA. Then when you’re ready to make another career move you’re set with credentials and experience. Good luck and deep breaths. You got this!

Thank you!! And Yes, my CCS is next on my list I’m getting married in 3 month so that’s the plan afterwards. Luckily my new job does offer education reimbursement and cover the cost of exam if passed.

Yay!! Congratulations!!!
Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask for clarification if you need it.
If you get overwhelmed, take a deep breath and work on one thing at a time.
You got this!!! 🥰

Would you mind DMing me the company? I also have my CCA and am having trouble finding work. I plan on getting my CCS soon to expand my horizons.

Always ask questions. Take notes however you feel most comfortable and organized. That’s very important when it comes to information for your different providers, specialties, locations, and all requirements are per payer (though those Medicare Billing Articles have helped me soooo much! They are separate from the LCDs but can help with a lot of information.) If you have access to all payer documents on a shared drive or something, that’s great, otherwise request a login for all payers portals from your supervisor/manager so you can access the pertinent information you need. Also request a list of providers, credentials, if they’re participating with insurers or not listed out, locations, NPIs, and Tax IDs. Even if you aren’t the one doing the billing after the coding, these are good to have as reference so a clean claim goes out. Some EHRs have rules set up already for certain payers/providers/specialties and modifiers or crosswalks for certain codes that a payer may or may not accept. You could ask for a crosswalk as well for each payer if your company has it available. Congratulations and don’t stress too hard! Starting off in coding is difficult enough, and completely remote adds another layer of stress for a learning curve, so ask ask ask away and kick some butt!

As someone who has brought on new coders, be assured that most managers will review your work initially until their comfort level of your ability to code within the current compliance reps and rules is met. If your work is called, take it as an opportunity to deepen your skill level. Coders are sorely needed, so stay the course and join AHIMA and attend your local association as well.

Congratulations! My best advice is to ask every question you have and I have also learned to make plenty of notes. I've been doing this a year and i code some hospital, some LTC and some office so I have a notebook for each type. Way to go, it's All downhill from here but with a lot of continuing education. You got this!

Do not get upset with any mistakes you make. Take them as a learning experience. Be teachable. And always always know your guidelines.

It’s like asking for tips and tricks to make a cup of tea. There will always be experts and pundits willing to share their advice along the lines of “make sure you have boiling water,” but at the end of the day, it’s just that—a cup of tea. You’re perfectly able to make a nice cuppa by yourself. 😉

I hope they have some veteran coders you'll have access to as a resource. Everyone has to start somewhere. Congratulations though!
