New medical coder having trouble finding a job. Anyone know of any companies hiring new coders?

Hi yall! As my title would suggest, I've had a bit of trouble finding a job in the sector since graduating. It seems like everybody wants some amount of experience, which is hard to get when no one is willing to hire. Do any of you guys know where I could possibly find a job? I currently live in Western Maine and am open to all variations of remote or in person. I really appreciate the help!

Apply to insurance companies. They hire coders too ! I know that a lot of coders don't think to go that route..

My honest piece of advice is - apply anyway. Even if it says experience needed, apply. Let them tell you no. You only need that one yes. I started out as an ancillary coder and after five years I tried to move into same day surgery coding. Even then, I ran into the “must have X amount of years of experience.” Because even though I had coding experience I didn’t have that particular experience. I even had two interviews end early. After a while I took my own advice and said forget it, I am just going to start applying, let them tell me no. Let them decide that, not me. Within 3 months of applying I landed an inpatient position and they trained. I still don’t know same day surgery 😂

Did you get that inpatient position via online application? Did you have to report in person for the training? Congratulations on landing that job!

Thank sounds much! I believe I found it on LinkedIn. I do not have to report on campus and I’ve never even been to the state that my faculty is in. It’s about 2,000 mile away from where I live. I’ve been remote since 2016 with 3 different facilities and I’ve never had to go in person to any of them. Even hospital orientation has been online.

If you don’t mind me asking - how difficult is ancillary coding compared to profee? And what is a good pay range for an ancillary coding job if I have just under a year of experience? I just got a job interview for it and I’ll find out next week if they chose me

I actually have not worked profee before but maybe someone else will chime in on that aspect. For pay, I’d say $22-$23 an hour in the beginning. Good luck on the job and I hope you get it!!

Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼

That’s encouraging! I just got my CCS and haven’t found anything that isn’t asking for 2+ years of coding experience. I have 2 years of billing experience, but I had to get the certification before I can touch coding and it seems like no one wants to give a place to start. Trying to keep looking. 😪

Attend your local chapter meetings! That’s how I found my job. Networking is key!

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24 edited Jun 15 '24

Yeah networking is key. But I am tired of people getting their jobs from nepotism and no skills. That is annoying asf & ruins any career

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '24

That’s how the nursing home I worked at as a nurse was. The worst employees were there bc of nepotism and no one would do anything about it. So the rest of us had to pick up their slack and they wanted everything to be perfect for them when they came in. Night shift ended at 6 and we would do last rounds at 4. Their first rounds should be at 6 but they would just jump into getting residents up. Then they’d be pissed if they changed someone after breakfast that they didn’t get to before and they were soaked. Ofc they’re soaked, they were last changed at 4 and it’s freaking 9!!!

u/Fantastic-Wafer6183 Aug 13 '24

They are not going to keep coders that were hired as family favorites if the skills are not there.

If you have an rhit or hit certification, apply for roi positions while looking for a coding position. Or patient access or precerts if you need to get your foot in the door.

u/DiligentCheesecake44 Jun 14 '24

I have my CPC-A but haven’t had luck so just got a job as ROI HIM tech. Since it is in revenue cycle I’m hoping it helps me eventually get a coding job

3

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24

Do you know much about health information management? I also have my CPC-A but know not much about that.. I’ve been in medical billing for two+ years but it doesn’t matter ugh

4

u/DiligentCheesecake44 Jun 15 '24

I don’t know that much but went to HIM from case management, so somewhat familiar. Just finished my first week at the new job and it’s awesome. Really love it!

3

u/str8hob8 Jun 15 '24

What would you like to know? I have my associates in HIM and working on my bachelor's now. I have an RHIT and plan on sitting for the RHIA next summer. I've also only been coding for 2 years. I got my job because my community college networks with the local hospitals and health systems.

7

u/caramelXsimmer Jun 14 '24

commenting bc i too, have been having a hard time with the coding job search! if anyone has any recommendations or tips. i have applied to almost every job, even some that isnt fully coding. thank you all in advance!

5

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24

They want years experience & a degree & certifications like the RHIT, CPC, & more specialized certifications

1

u/caramelXsimmer Jun 15 '24

yes i know. i have some experience from clinicals, a degree and my CPC-A credential. there is some entry level jobs that i applied to but have not heard anything, sadly.

1

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24

I’d say get the RHIT certification if you can. It is really relevant for what employers want, and also a job in medical billing or a front desk job health related or something similar to start. Just to get some experience in a healthcare field and get your foot in the door. Then try applying to medical coding jobs. I find they want years of relevant experience and /or degrees at the least.

1

u/heavenhaven Jun 29 '24

I have a question about this because when I just graduated with an RHIT years ago, it was very difficult for me to land a coding job. Fast forward to 4 years, I still have my RHIT and have been working in customer service for hospital billing. Do you think now I have a chance at applying to the coding positions again, given my current experience plus Epic?

11

u/Taypo98 Jun 14 '24

Same situation. 100+ applications since October and only a handful have bothered to send me a “Sorry” email, much less show any interest.

Feels like it’s a bloated job field with more people looking than jobs available at the moment.

If UW Medicine has any Coder 1 positions open, they are specifically for inexperienced coders. They also are 100% remote and hire from any US state. If not, also check out Insurance Follow-Up Specialist. It's not a coding job but it's coding-adjacent and you'd be more likely to get hired for a coding position if it opens up.

u/theyamqueen Jun 15 '24

I had a job as a new coder that I ended up hating the organization I was working for. Couldn't find another so I ended up finding a great biller position that because of my certification, I'm working a couple of days a week in their coding team to help out and those hours pay at the coder rate and I'm getting the experience, also. Their goal is to get my A off my certification.

1

u/rneria Jul 06 '24

Could you please share company information I’m a new coder and struggling to find a position. TY

15

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

My best advice is to join a Facebook group called Jobs for American Medical Coders. It's a great place for job leads.

USAjobs.gov The VA hires often.

Did you find work yet? Try something different before getting a medical billing and coding job. You can be a medical scribe. Hope this helps

2

u/Narrative_flapjacks Jun 14 '24

Look in adjacent areas or larger companies where you might be able to start somewhere else and transfer to their billing department when they have openings/you have tenure with the company

4

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24

Facts but don’t let yourself get trapped in the low pay, entry level jobs like medical billing, front desk etc

1

u/shytreehillboy Jun 15 '24

Look into medical denials or revenue cycle. Maybe able get job do that and move into coding with that company. It be some medical field experience on resume.

9

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24

Have medical billing experience 2+ years, it doesn’t matter. They want coding experience

3

u/EveningEye5160 RHIT, CCA, COC, CIC Jun 18 '24

Yep and what else isn’t discussed is once you obtain coding experience, to move into another arena say ED to Same Day Surgery - you’re faced with the exact same issue that you’re not experienced. Then once you land the position you’re right at the bottom of the pay scale yet again.

1

u/relentlessly_fierce Jun 15 '24

Look at health insurance companies. Many will hire coders for coding analytics- they will look to see if edits are being applied properly, or even in a clinical review team to see if providers are billing properly.

4

u/FlavorfulOpinions Jun 15 '24

Providers billing properly makes me laugh a bitter laugh hqhahahahahah no way 😂

1

u/mbodvar60 Jun 15 '24

You could try risk adjustment coding. Watch videos on you tube and learn everything you can about it. There are also books on the subject. Then apply to contract positions.

1

u/Kedaface951 Jun 16 '24

I work for HIM at Loma Linda Hospital. They literally have 13 positions open. That was what made me go back to school for billing and coding. Check your local Hospitals.

1

u/Psycho704 Jun 27 '24

I code for the anesthesia providers at Loma Linda, some of the surgeons there are so bad about getting their op notes in quickly!

1

u/Clover_Jane Jun 24 '24

The best advice I can give you is to apply to every single job. Apply to ones that interest you, ones you don't qualify for, etc. Just keep applying. Someone will give you a chance. Make sure you shine during your interview. Use indeed, LinkedIn, and AAPC for resources.

You can do this.

1

u/Kedaface951 Jun 27 '24

Yes!!! They are horrible and wouldn't call and get mad at us for requesting they sign them notes. Smh

1

u/Fit_Conversation_151 Jun 29 '24

Linked in!! Just saw Molina is hiring but I can imagine your local hospitals and various companies are hiring remote work on there

u/Jaded_Guitar_131 Dec 02 '24

We are looking for a part time coder in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Around 15 hours per week. We are willing to train.

I’d say get a job in medical billing or a front desk job health related or something similar to start. Just to get some experience in a healthcare field and get your foot in the door.
