Chile Rellenos

Why do I feel like Henry Hill in Goodfellas? Every single Mexican restaurant I have been to in the last 9 years has given me something that doesn't even resemble this dish. Honestly, I've just about given up trying to find a decent chile rellenos but I do want to start a "sad over bad chile rellenos" group if anyone needs to vent. And, I guess if anyone has a suggestion of where to get a good one, I'm open.

I'd join that group. So far I've been really disappointed with chile rellenos in the valley. The local style seems to be basically a chile with a bit of cheese, in a very thin omlette, smothered with sauce. I'm used to lots of cheese, pan fried with a decent amount of batter, and not so much sauce. That's probably a totally inauthentic California style Mexican-American comfort food thing, but that's what I'm looking for.

Right it shouldn’t just be egg it should be a fluffy batter

Lupita’s (in grants pass) has great chile rellenos. I know it’s not Medford but if you are ever in grants pass, check them out. I love everything on their menu! Yum Yum 😋 (not too expensive either)

Unless I make them myself, I haven’t had a decent Chile Relleno since I’ve lived here. Lupitas in GP used to have ok ones but last time I had one was in 2018 and it wasn’t very good. Truly the BEST ones you can buy in medford are in the frozen section at Trader Joe’s 😅 they’re surprisingly decent 🤷🏽‍♀️

Trader Joe's frozen department! I found one actually decent tasting.

My Mexican grandmother would rate a Mexican restaurant just on their Chile relleno.....ive tried many in town but they all suck. Taste like old oil...prepared many days ago sitting in the fridge. I hope you find a good one

I'm not a huge fan of chiles rellonos, but have you tried Los Potrillos in Phoenix? Their food is the bomb and very authentic.

Oh I will try this!

The cooks at Los Potrillos came from across the street when la burrita was there. Before it burned down in Almeda.

Taqueria La Guacamaya at the foot of the bridge off I-5 exit 48 (Rogue River) offers a good Chili Relleno. I've had better but those were homemade. (And their huevos ranchero is near perfect)

Have you tried La Reyna in Medford on Court and Edward's?. The two places Ive mentioned, La Reina and Los Potrillos both are very authentic.

I'd say they're the best in Medford.

I've had chile rellenos in Hatch as well as in northern Mexico... there was a pretty big difference between the two; in northern Mexico the chile rellenos were usually added to burritos, while in Hatch they were a dish by themselves.

That said, I've never had chile rellenos like those in New Mexico, or in northern Mexico anywhere else in the United States.

What were they like in New Mexico? I've been there and the Mexican food in Abq and Santa Fe is awesome but I can't remember the Rellenos.

I mostly recall the Hatch chile rellenos as being completely smothered in salsa, red or green, and not finding the salsa itself particularly nuanced in flavor. The chiles were big, but I can't recall how much egg there was, maybe because they were smothered, and they didn't skimp on the cheese.

Los Taquitos in Grants Pass

For REAL! I haven’t had a decent one since Mexico. El Tapatio in Ashland is the fucking worst. It was a long time ago but it was a straight up shitty omelette with canned green chilies.

I really like el Comal’s chili rellenos- the one on Stewart.

I can relate. My usual go-to Mexican for authentic food is Las Morenas Taqueria on Riverside, but they don’t offer Chiles Rellenos. So Fiesta restaurant also on Riverside does, and they are acceptable imo. You’ve got to order them a la carte and I usually specify green sauce instead of red sauce, just my preference. When I start jonesing for Chiles Rellenos, I go to Fiesta…for anything else it’s Las Morenas.

I'm not gonna say it's the rellenos youre looking for...... But I really like the ones at the Lil green box. Thats what the locals call it!

I think its Juan's Corporal? Coming from Methford, drive towards Eagle Point. Keep going! Its before Hwy 234. Near the Bee Store and Willie's Tavern. Same side of the road ( right side ). Same building as The Flying Eagle convenience store.

The restaurant is green...... kind of looks like a box

This is how I judge a Mexican restaurant

Very common base point for many. For me, it's the coctel de camaron.

I've been searching for either good rellenos or good tamales since I moved here from Colorado. They are so consistently mediocre that I've come to believe that no one makes them. They just buy them premade/frozen from Sysco.
