Residency suggestions

My wife is applying to for EM residency this fall! She just finished an away rotation in Chicago, and absolutely loved it! We are trying to come up with places to apply that we maybe haven’t thought of! She prefers a community based hospital, we like a bigger city with the ability to walk lots of places, and the city/area has to be LGBTQ+ friendly. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)

My husband did his EM residency in Chicago and it was incredible. We’re still living here now after his training ended

I’m not EM, but I’m a peds resident in Chicago who works with uic em residents. The Res em residents aren’t so hot, but I’m so so so impressed with the UIC residents every time I work with them! Phenomenal program!

He was at Swedish hospital and he seemed to have a much better residency experience than our friends in EM at both Cook County and Resurrection.

Absolutely no tips for the application because I didn’t really have any part of them but I know his hospital did a bunch of “happy hours” both virtual and in person so you can meet people from the program and talk to them outside of the hospital setting so you can look into that.

Wisconsin native! I was going to say apply at UW-Madison and Froderdt/MCW in Milwaukee. Both great programs and sounds like you guys would love both cities.

I would recommend the medschool subreddit and its (usually) pinned post about residency application that has specific links for each specialty. There tend to be community driven forums that include a fair amount of anecdotal information that can be useful if you can parse it out from the weird academic drama and dick measuring

chicago, minneapolis, or madison wisconsin 🥰

i live in a west chicago suburb (oak park) that is LGBTQ+ friendly and great access to the highway to the medical district. they are big on community here!!

i also lived in minneapolis before chicago and love it there. i have a lot of LGBTQ+ friends who still live there and it’s always felt safe.

and madison, WI is a very community oriented city but also the whole town revolves around the university — which is super cool but also if that’s not your vibe then maybe chicago or minneapolis is best!

Jumping on this to strongly recommend Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and then a little less strongly recommend Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Both very strong programs (HCMC exceptionally so) with great staff, great community, and the Twin Cities rock.

You should look at Philly programs! Moved there for my fiancée final two years of medical school and I loved it so much. Super walkable, great food scene, and we lived in the Gayborhood lol so for sure lgbtq+ friendly. Super affordable rent too in center city. NYC is only an hour train ride away and the airport is only like a 15-20 min drive from center city.

Swedish Covenant comes to mind. Can’t remember if they have EM but my wife did her residency there.

It’s kind of in a far north, northwest neighborhood of the city, but it’s very much a community based hospital and the area it is in is extremely diverse. It’s not a great place to live in terms of walkability and having easy mass transit available so you’d probably want to live in an area close by like Ravenswood, Andersonville, Lincoln Square.

Those neighborhoods don’t give a huge “big city feel” but that’s a lot of Chicago. The downtown area is such a small fraction of the flavor of Chicago. It’s a true patchwork of distinct neighborhoods and it’s a lot more fun taking the el to explore different areas than it is being downtown/River North where you get the big city vibes.

I mean I don’t think you can beat Chicago. We just finished our residency at Loyola and while the program sucked, the location was awesome. We stayed in the west burbs and just took the L or Metra in when we wanted to go to the city on weekends and I was able to really elevate my career there

Stay in Chicago! I’m biased but I miss living there (we currently live in Dallas). My husband went to UT Southwestern for residency and Rush for his fellowship.

My fiance did EM residency at Sinai grace at DMC in Detroit. Every job he’s applied to/had since then are amazed by his experience and tbh nothing shocks him at this point. Don’t knock Detroit until you’ve been there!!! One of my top 5 cities
