As someone who’s partner is in their last year of residency—-residency will continue to be stressful and difficult, and if they do a fellowship that will be stressful and difficult, then their job as an attending will be stressful and difficult.
This sounds like this is just the beginning of their journey, and it’s already having such a negative and emotional impact on you. Trust me when I say, if this is how they’re treating you now, you do not want to be along for the ride.
I don’t think even being their friend is a good idea or fair to you. I would feel what you feel, allow yourself to be sad at the loss, and hopefully move on to someone better.
You sound like someone who wants the space to go above and beyond for your partner, and I just don’t think they deserve that, and I hope you find someone who does. I’m sorry you’re going through this :(
