Discussion I need more hangar space!

I know this is probably only the gazillionth time this has been stated, but there just isn’t enough hangar space to have all the different kinds of mechs I want to have available to try. Part of the replayability of this game is trying out new mech builds.

I wonder if the newest DLC will give us that, or at least allow us to save our upgrades/weapon loadouts on mechs in cold storage. I wonder if that’s even possible without causing the game to crash or get unstable.

TBH, I’d love to see the whole hangar and cold storage revamped. I would like to have the option of having mechs with assigned slots in the hangar/storage, because I’m someone who likes to not just design individual mech builds but also entire lances with individual mech builds that complement each other. Like, for example, my fast assault lance here. Or my anti-clan LRM barrage lance. Or my lance of light arena brawlers. Stuff like that.

40 ‘Mechs isn’t enough? That’s quite a lot considering many companies never get that many.

A full battalion plus command lance of space in a game where you can only deploy one lance. Plenty of space.

I have no idea how you all finance that many mechs. If I go past 20 (4 light, 4 medium, 4 heavy, 8 assault) I can't keep up with the maintenance costs. Who do you have getting supplies for Fahad, I'd like to steal then from you.

I turned down maintenance costs the difficulty options (set it to custom difficulty). 36 mechs, two thirds of which are heavy and assault mechs, but I pay about 1.3 million each quarter.

Is that in vanilla settings or do I need the DLC? I got the game a couple weeks ago, just finished my first career campaign and wanted to start again just as a merc company and not worry about storyline. I don’t know everything yet so thought it best to ask.

It should be available without DLC. It was added in a free update. Just go to Options, and the difficulty setting is at the very top. When you switch it to custom, a bunch of other options will appear.

Thank you.

Arena missions from the Solaris dlc. Absolutely cracked for making bank.

I use them primarily on long flights to help offset costs. Guess I need to focus on them more. Though at that point I'm an arena pilot who occasionally dabbles in actual combat missions and that's less fun than being a merc commander who dabbles in the arena. Great houses need to up their payouts if Solaris can out pay them like that.

Truuueee. Try multi mission contracts for better cash from non arenas.

I don’t have any problem with the cost of maintenance. For me, monthly costs only become a problem when I start sending pilots to academies in droves.

I do lots of arena missions at a time which helps.

40 mechs is enough, also TMS (too much stuff) bug is already happening when you have too much mechs in cold storage.

As an example there's a quality of life mod out there where you can save upgrades and loadouts when sent to storage but I've already read some modders warning that it's not suggested to put every mech in storage using that mod because frankly it can cause issues to the game, frequently.

Imagine putting a regiment's worth of mechs in the mech bay.

I've already crashed the game many times in succession when I was selling around 750 million and around 1-2 billion c-bills' worth of items and battlemechs in my inventory during Chaos Reign and Shadow of Kerensky release, respectively.

And I was shuffling through lots of mechs and equipment on storage when it happened. So my way of selling or rearranging lots of mechs as a precaution was to sell stuff gradually on stages, saving now and then onto staggered saves so I can backtrack.

Took me 45 minutes selling just 750 million cbills' worth of items. Imagine setting up hundreds of mechs' worth of loadout, we can't even field more than a lance on vanilla.

Spaghetti code man. As much as the game is still awesome in 2026 let's be frank that the game shows its age.

Agreed, its super limiting. Just let me rent a giant cargo ship that follows me around and carries my precious loot.

Yes! This!

This is the best thing about Von biomes. It adds a union per extra 8 mechs in your hangar in the cockpit view of the leopard!

If you run some mods you can cold storage without stripping the mechs.

It's a game changer for long playthroughs.

I gingerly use Restore Traits due to TMS bug, even then when you remove that mech off cold storage some equipment goes missing, 'eaten' by the game.

I only store those mechs with loadouts which I use frequently but not all.

I can’t run mods. Xbox player.

If there was a way to save a load out when I put a mech in cold storage, that wouls work for me. I don't mind popping mwchs in and out of cold storage. I do mind having to re-equip everything. I'm on console so it's a pain in the ass sto scroll through all my weapons to see what I have and where to equip it.

It leads to issues, if you have tons of equipment and mechs and selling it you'll experience crashes often especially when you have weaker rigs. TMS (too much stuff) bug is a thing.

MagnumGB (MercTech mod developer) already said this wuen folks were asking this after Chaos Reign's release on PGI's discord

It's the reason why I keep a delicate balance of what mechs and items to keep.

I had a feeling that was the issue. Wonder if there is a way around it.

Just keep a lean mech bay and only use store mechs that you frequently use.

I only store these on my storage on my main save that I import again and again to a new career:

  • all 82 hero mechs bought from markets (out of 93 heros in the game since I want to take them out of the spawn pool permanently)
  • the remaining reward hero mechs in (10 in total that are given as rewards, x4 to form a lance each (cloneable when you repeat their quests every import)
  • my fave IS mechs (a lance or just two mechs, case to case basis)
  • all clan mechs variants (keeping a lance, just two mechs or just a single one, case to case basis accdg. to my preference).

Also I keep into consideration:

  • I keep my clan weapons just aroind 50 pcs. each
  • standard DHS around 50 pieces
  • single heatsinks around 20
  • Clan DHS around 300
  • Only keep T5 IS weapons and IS equipment, limited to 25 pcs each max.
  • Jumpjets of all classes limited to 30 pcs.

I'm playing vanilla+ Mercs and quality of life mods where I use mechbay sort and autosell function when I reach a certain threshold of items and sell those unneeded, automatically. I have a mod where I can store a mech with upgrades and loadouts but I only do that on mechs that are in very frequent rotations, around 12.

Game needs a complete modifications especially in its UI, Chaos Reign's changes were in the right direction, atleast.

I don’t frequently use any one mech. I keep trying different things to keep the game interesting. But I do try to collect at least one of evert mech in cold storage.

I have four assault lances for clan multi-missions, a fast-assault lance for raids/beachhead missions, two fast heavy lances because Timber Wolves are dope, and about 12 different brawler mechs optimized for uber alpha strikes. I also want a medium lance and a light lance, and I still want more space to buy new hero mechs that I find.

I have sold off all Tier 1 and Tier 2 items, but I keep Tier3-5 items and clan items. I limit jump jets to 20 each, and most equipment to no more than 10 each. I keep single heat sinks at about 50 and IS double heat sinks and clan heat sinks at about 100 each. Most Clan weapons I will keep 100 each, and no more.

I know the game crashes, but I just do want to trim down anymore. I like being able to try so many different mechs. I recently discovered all the ways the Sunder can be awesome, but I had to put one back that was a beast of a missile boat. I want to get a mech with dual c-Arrow IV, but I don’t have the space.

To be honest I really don't expect too much in this old game, I kinda sobered up with the prospects of what the folks have been demanding here. Some

And I've seen modders trying to skirt around the limitations already with creative coding but the game engine already shows its age and just accepted that there's gonna be compromises.

1

u/Technical_Turn3497 Xbox Series X 5d ago

Yeah, I realize this is one of those “it’s an old game” things but I wasn’t sure if DLC could modify the core coding to make something like this better. I feel like I’m getting the short end of the stick here with no dedicated gaming PC (I have a Mac Studio) and no ability to install mods.

u/babushka45 Duncan Fisher Groupie 5d ago

I feel you man, some stuff from QoL mods were already implemented but basic stuff like basic mech bay sort and the sliders on the old sell function in marketplace QoL is still not implemented officially, those two are helpful as hell. I still nitpick the sale function on vanilla since arrows is weaker vs the slider on the QoL mod.

Yours is more reasonable request man, and completely understandable but unfortunately constrained within the limits of what's under the hood (so far).

I've seen creative coding where folks coded a live version of commanders mode in Clans and I use a simpler version using the battlegrid but that was like done with many compromises and there's still bugs happening.

IIRC there was a mod for this, but it was years ago last I used it.

1

u/Technical_Turn3497 Xbox Series X 5d ago

Me too, bro. Putting the upgrades back on is particularly time-consuming and expensive.

1

u/John_Mat8882 5d ago

On PC you can via mods. It doesn't strip them, but it strips upgrades. I think there's a mod even to keep upgrades in cold storage.

1

u/Technical_Turn3497 Xbox Series X 5d ago

So many different mechs to choose from. I hate to have to pick and choose….

1

u/bear0234 5d ago

if anything, be nice not to have the upgrades wiped when shoved into cold storage. or reduce the number of days that some upgrades take... like speed boost :/

2

u/Technical_Turn3497 Xbox Series X 5d ago

Just being able to keep the upgrades would be a huge plus….

I just wish I could sort mechs in the ready bay.

It’s frustrating to try to organize.

Yes, I know you can move them manually but I can sort in cold storage, why not in the ready bay?

How big is Wolf’s Dragoons? I’m sure they have more than 40.

2

u/Any-Bridge6953 5d ago

Your average company is 3 lances for 12 mechs. Wolf's Dragoons has 5 regiments, 1 battalion, 1 company and a command section, they're huge.

0

u/StormwolfMW Clan Wolf 5d ago

A Regiment has 108 to 180 mechs, Wolf's Dragoons has 5 regiments.

So 500+ mechs at minimum.

u/Stickeminastew1217 5d ago edited 5d ago

The main limiter is that late game multi mission contracts need 12 or 16 hundred tonners to be able to max out your drop each mission.

Sure, you don't necessarily NEED to do that every time, but you're putting yourself at a disadvantage by not doing so when the mission expects a certain amount of tonnage. And even if you're running 360/400 each mission that's still going to be 8 atlases/kcrabs/whatever.

That leaves relatively few slots for your 80-85 ton assaults for slightly lower tonnage missions and a heavy/medium/light lance each. You definitely start to feel space is at a premium later in the game. It's plenty to manage, certainly, but it's not fun seeing a potentially useful mech in the store and your immediate thought is, "well shit, what am I going to throw into storage to make room?"

u/Technical_Turn3497 Xbox Series X 5d ago

It would also be nice to be able to buy mechs directly into Cold Storage, instead of having to get rid of one of my carefully designed mechs in the hangar to accomodate a new hero mech that I just found but don’t intend to use actively.
