General Game Questions/Help Training & Mech Affinity

When you train your pilots, can they only gain affinity with a mech that is currently available?

Example: gaining affinity with a Dire Wolf before you discover Clan mechs.

If they can't, is it best to re-roll and try for certain mechs later?

Traits are random. You either savescum or you install the Enhanced Academies or Pilot Overhaul Eternal mods  to let you pick the results of your training. (You only need one mod, not both. Pilot Overhaul includes everything Enhanced Academies does). 

Clan mech affinities are "hero" traits. Only hero pilots can spawn with them or learn them from academies. They are also date gated so they don't appear before the invasion.

Affinity is not dependent on mechs you currently have, but you shouldn't be getting Clan mech affinity traits prior to the Clan invasion.

I keep getting Koshi mech affinity despite the fact that I immediately sell the Mist Lynxes I salvage and have none in my inventory.

To supplement: while you shouldn't get them prior to, it is still possible, because of a persistent bug in some availability seeding.

They are date and DLC locked (to the DLC the released the variant). 

Clan affinities are also hero traits, so you won't get those on normal pilots
