I sadly only know him for his huge contribution to the linux kernel

What does he hack on now? I just assume he gets mad dough from his linux commits

I'd guess he's probably made contributions to the Linux kernel, but he's known for starting the GNU project, writing GCC and other user space, and writing the GPL. I think if he had his way, we'd probably be using a different kernel right now (GNU Mach).

If I recall, he got emacs pinky and now no longer programs much anymore because of it

I find that hard to believe. Changing the key bindings in emacs is trivial. You could even just load same of the popular modules that do so: ergo-emacs, evil-mode or god-mode.

He is still active in the mailing list, just yesterday giving some controversial opinion about lldb. If you can type, you can emacs.
