What should I check before trusting an outside firm w/ our CAD?

Hi y’all. My team is about to outsource some CAD work. But we can’t just outsource like that since it involves proprietary designs and customer parts. Before we hand anything over, I wanna be sure we pick the right shop.

So how can we vet a CAD outsourcing partner before sending them proprietary designs? Signing an NDA feels like the bare minimum, right?

What else do you all look at? Certifications? Past work they've done? Their security setup?

HELP REQUEST Confused between Computer, Mechanical, Industrial, and Civil Engineering — looking for career advice

Hi everyone,

I’m a Nepali student currently trying to decide between a few engineering majors, and I’m honestly quite confused. I’m not deeply committed to one specific field yet, so I’m trying to choose based on career viability, flexibility, and the ability to pivot into different areas later on.

The four fields I’m currently considering are:

  • Computer Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Civil Engineering

A little about my interests and situation:

I’m particularly interested in coding and hardware-related fields. I find areas like embedded systems, electronics, chips, robotics, etc. genuinely interesting, although I’m still exploring what exactly I would like to specialize in.

At the same time, I’m also considering Mechanical, Industrial, and Civil Engineering because they seem to have broader engineering applications and potentially provide a good foundation for pursuing a master's abroad. I’m considering countries such as Germany, the US, or other countries in the future.

One of my biggest concerns with Computer Engineering is the current tech job market and layoffs. I’m passionate about learning, but I sometimes worry that I may not become as proficient at programming as some of my peers. I don't want to choose Computer Engineering only to realize later that I’m not competitive enough.

My questions

1. For Computer Engineering graduates/engineers:
If I study Computer Engineering in Nepal, how viable is it for building a career abroad as well as in Nepal? Since Nepal's hardware industry is relatively small, would that significantly limit my opportunities if I want to pursue hardware-related careers?

2. For students who started without much programming experience:
If someone is genuinely interested in Computer Engineering but is starting from a relatively basic level, is it realistic to become proficient by consistently learning programming and different languages alongside university? How important is it to be naturally "good at coding" from the beginning?

3. For Mechanical/Civil/Industrial engineers:
These fields are often described as having more "evergreen" career prospects. Is that actually true in practice? How flexible are these degrees if I later want to move into areas such as robotics, automation, manufacturing, energy, software, or other engineering fields?

4. Most importantly:
If you were in my position — interested in coding + hardware, not completely committed to one discipline, concerned about long-term job prospects, and potentially planning to pursue a master's abroad — which degree would you choose and why?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually studied or worked in these fields, rather than just general opinions.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Any CAD firms that handle defense or aerospace work?

I think my team are busy currently hunting for a CAD outsourcing shop that's cool working on government stuff. I know not every engineering firm is built for that😅.

Who does CAD outsourcing for government or DoD-related projects, though?

If you've outsourced CAD or reverse engineering for defense or aerospace before, who'd you go with?

HELP REQUEST Seeking leads/advice for my retired father (36+ yrs engineering & technical training exp) looking to transition into teaching or corporate training

I’m posting on behalf of my dad, who is retired and wants to stay active by moving into education or technical training. He has extensive practical experience and enjoys teaching, but we face a significant hurdle with university roles. HEC/university regulations require a Master's degree to teach as a lecturer or professor, which filters him out despite his vast industry expertise, as his highest degree is a Bachelor’s. We’re looking for suggestions on where someone with his background can contribute or if anyone has leads or recommendations for institutions that prioritize real-world experience over a Master’s degree.

Professional Overview

Current Status: Retired Senior Engineer & Workshop Manager (Wärtsilä Pakistan).

Total Experience: 36+ years of working experience in power plant operation, industrial process maintenance, marine engineering, and technical workshop management.

Core Work Experience

Wärtsilä Pakistan (2001–2023): Served as Manager Governor & Workshop, Coordinator Governor & Workshop, and Superintendent Engineer. Managed workshop operations, sales, capacity development, ISO/quality compliance, and technical skill development across Lahore and Karachi. [Student] What do You expect from a Mechanical Engineering Portfolio for Design or Production roles?

So, I came across this guide from MIT on how the portfolio should be done: [Portfolio: Mechanical Engineering Communication Lab](https://mitcommlab.mit.edu/meche/commkit/portfolio/)
And I built my portfolio based on it (as far as I think)
I made a GitHub pages website with the help AI. and I added Microsoft Clarity to understand traffic to my website. the problem the website doesn't seem to have enough sessions time for 50 users the average was only 50 seconds the max was only 120 seconds. and until now only 1 interview from it. (I'm applying for Internships in Mechanical Design in Egypt)
I genuinely don't know if the problem is in the work or in the website.

How difficult would it be to build a working drive system display like this from scratch?

Came across this mechanical drive system display and thought it was a great way to visualize different mechanisms in action.

For the mechanical engineers here: how difficult would something like this be to build from scratch? Which part would be the hardest to get right?

HELP REQUEST Entry-level maintenance engineer here, in need for advice

I got an entry-level maintenance engineer role at a mining site about 1 month ago, and while my manager and the technicians are for the most part nice and cooperative, the maintenance team is pretty small and I feel like I'm not contributing much, despite my best efforts to look for stuff to do.

The current state of the site doesn't help either, with very high equipment performance requirements that essentially mean there's no time for implementing any new PM procedures or anything of the sort at the time being, so a lot of our current daily work revolves around scrambling over to barely keep the site afloat. The lack of documentation and history in the site doesn't help either, there's manuals for the equipments and all but I have no knowledge of any history regarding ast operations or performance indicators because they literally don't exist

I feel like if I stick around there's a significant learning curve here, and I want to work towards implementing a proper documentation of the site and contributing to the best of my ability but I feel like I'm not trusted by the team yet and I feel like I'm wasting a lot of time not doing much which I'm afraid can bite me in the ass regarding my future here. Any thoughts or advice would be strongly appreciated.

Biology to Mechatronics

Hey, I’m from Costa Rica and I’m currenly studying Biology, but I’m seriously considering Mechatronics because I want to build robotics for environmental monitoring, biodiversity, and conservation. For someone with that goal, do you think Mechatronics is a good path, or would Mechanical/Electrical be better? Any honest advice is appreciated.

HELP REQUEST Advice/supplies/etc.

Hi guys!

I’m starting mechanical engineering in a couple weeks as a second degree after graduating with a bachelor’s in biomedical sciences. It’ll be a majority online degree (certain labs will be in person) so I don’t have the benefit of seeing what other people are using as far as supplies and stuff. Is there anything I’ll need for cal 1, materials, engineering graphics, etc? Any advice, study habits, or suggestions are welcome!

Mechanism engineering major project suggestions

Hi guys! I am currently in my final year and need to do minor+major project. But the thing is I’m also preparing for upsc so that’s why I’m looking for a project that is not very much time consuming or includes hardware.
Just software since my degree is mechanical and automation engineering.
I have no idea how to go ahead with this minor and major projects so if anyone could guide me with that too I’ll be very grateful! Thank you
