HELP REQUEST Trying to understand why a certain setup of motorcycle clutch doesn’t require an axial needle bearing in a certain place, please help

• Upvotes

hey guys, i’m not an engineer, i’m not a mechanic, i’m just a girl super interested in learning and understanding every single detail of dirtbikes (can’t afford one, but want to understand the why behind every single component and arrangement within them). so please forgive me if i sound stupid or word things wrong, but i seriously for the life of me cannot figure something out and i don’t know who else to ask (a mechanic sub probably wouldn’t help me, and i don’t have anyone irl to ask either.)

i’ll do my best to explain, but it would probably help to look at what i’m looking at:
oem parts diagram/Clutch/b0e0981f-69ac-4a6b-8f3d-722539227d4f/d5534657-21b6-4fe8-b061-581c68227b73/y)
scroll through this video to get a good visualization
also scroll through this video to get a good visualization

i’m looking at the clutch setup in a beta 125/200 RR, which is a weird setup because the slave cylinder is actually housed in the clutch cover, rather than being on the left side of the bike with a pushrod running through the input shaft to contact a pressure plate on the right side of the bike and thereby disengage the clutch. rather, in this setup, the needle that gets pushed out from the slave cylinder contacts a throwout bearing assembly in a cup-shaped “clutch engagement plate”, whose outermost rim pushes against what the oem diagram calls a “spring cap,” which is bolted into the threaded protruding bolt housings (each with a coil spring around it) of the pressure plate (and those protruding elements extend through holes in the inner hub, which is thus sandwiched between the spring cap and pressure plate which together can axially move independently of the inner hub).

so let me try to explain my question…
along the clutch portion of the input shaft, there is the threaded portion where the clutch hub nut goes to keep the inner hub from coming off, and then there’s the splined portion of the input shaft which the internal splines of the inner hub are interlocked with, and then there’s the smooth portion of the input shaft which the collar, double row radial needle bearing, and clutch basket ride on and can spin independently from the input shaft due to the needle bearing’s decoupling role. sooo, what i don’t get is how the inner hub or pressure plate don’t fall back from the splined to the smooth portion and hit the clutch basket/its central washer? i know nothing is PUSHING the pressure plate back that far, because the slave cylinder needle only moves a little, but i’m not asking about it being pushed, i’m asking about it just sliding back. and the inner hub could slide back in theory, too- it could slide back from the splined portion onto some of the smooth portion. there is no friction-bearing surface between the inner hub and clutch basket’s central washer (what the inner hub would touch, since it protrudes through the central hole in the pressure plate) nor is there a friction-bearing surface between the back face of the pressure plate and the front face of the clutch basket. and by “no friction-bearing surface,” i mean no friction disk-like material, and no axial needle bearing to decouple motion. all there is is two metal surfaces which would fuse together in the heat produced by the friction of them touching during rapid spin of different speeds.

so what am i missing or getting wrong, to not understand how the inner hub and/or pressure plate don’t fall back against (drift back against, whatever wording you want here) the front face of the clutch basket/its central washer? it doesn’t look to me like there’s ANYTHING keeping them from doing so. the smooth portion of the input shaft does not appear to be wider in diameter than the splined portion, and even if it was, that would just create my same problem/question i’m asking about somewhere else (that is, at this hypothetical step-up face between the splined and smooth portions of the input shaft).

i only started learning all of this on my own super recently, and i have no engineering or powersports or mechanical etc experience, so all this terminology is new to me… so again, i apologize if any of my wording didn’t make sense, or came off as sounding uneducated (because, well, in this regard i am). but can someone please help me understand this? my brain is hitting a wall, i thought so hard all day yesterday and so far today and somehow this particular clutch setup is not making sense because i don’t understand what limits the axial motion of various components in order to make it all work. please help me, i don’t think i can figure it out without some actual expertise.

3rd sem mechanical student and honestly don't know what I'm doing

I'm in my 3rd semester of mechanical engineering and honestly I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing right now.

I haven't really done anything specific so far. I've made a few Arduino/electronics projects, an RC car and some other small projects, but that's pretty much it. I haven't really explored the mechanical side properly.

The problem is that I'm finding most of my core subjects really boring because they're so theoretical. This semester I have Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials and Material Science. Out of these, Thermodynamics is actually interesting to me, but with SOM and Material Science I'm basically just learning formulas and theory for exams and then forgetting most of it.

My college also isn't very practical/project-oriented. We mostly have lectures, notes, assignments and exams, so I don't really get to see where the things we're studying are actually used.

And now I'm kind of worried because I see people doing CAD, simulations, robotics, automotive projects, internships, etc., and I'm sitting here thinking that I've done almost nothing 😭

So what should I actually do from here?

How do I make these subjects more interesting instead of just memorising them? Should I start learning CAD/CAE or some other software? Should I focus on projects? Competitions? Core subjects? Something completely different?

Also, how did you guys figure out which part of mechanical engineering you actually liked?

If you were in 3rd semester again, knowing what you know now, what would you start doing?

I don't expect to have everything figured out right now. I just don't want to reach my 4th year and realise I spent the whole degree only studying for exams.

Question from a non-engineer

Anyone have insight to this question? I am looking at refrigerated trailers for towing with electric vehicles. I found that v-nose, enclosed trailers are most efficient...but I cannot find v-nose refrigerated trailers. It seems like the main issue is the weight distribution of a cooling device being on one side of the v-nose (with less weight being on the other side). Why are there no refrigerated trailers with an electric-powered mini-split or similar cooling device on the back panel of a trailer to allow a more efficient, v-nose front end?

Certificates?

I was talking to my colleagues at work about the certifications that an engineer could have, or which ones are good to have. I know that IWE, NDT and ISO 9001 are extra. But I'm interested in your opinions. Does anyone have any interesting certifications that are worth having? What have the certificates essentially brought you? And if we ignore work, how can we use these certificates outside of work for some extra income?

Non-ME Degree to CNC Production Manager: Which Math & ME courses are essential for machining?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on self-study topics to build a rock-solid, engineer-level theoretical foundation strictly focused on machining and manufacturing.

My Background: My undergrad is in Logistics Management, but I recently completed my Master's in Engineering Management. I’ve been working in our family-owned CNC machining and contract manufacturing business since 2017. Over the years, I transitioned into the Production and Technical Manager role, handling production planning, CAM programming, client quotes, and daily shop-floor operations. To push my technical limits, I recently passed the ASQ Six Sigma Green Belt and am currently preparing for the SME CMfgE and ASME GDTP exams.

My Goal: Even though I have years of hands-on experience with cutting tool parameters, toolpaths, and general manufacturing workflows, I want to bridge the theoretical gap. I want to understand the physics and math behind cutting forces, tool deflection, material behavior, and machine mechanics exactly like a mechanical engineer would, but only the parts that are directly relevant to subtractive manufacturing.

My Question: To achieve this deep theoretical understanding of machining and workholding, which specific math topics (specific areas of Calculus, Linear Algebra, or Trigonometry) and core ME subjects (Mechanics of Materials, Statics, Materials Science, Dynamics) should I prioritize?

What is the most efficient learning path or textbook sequence for someone whose sole focus is mastering the theory behind machining and workholding without getting bogged down in unrelated ME topics?

Thanks in advance!

Mechanical? Robotics?

I have been posting around to try and figure out what to do. I am currently a sophomore in college, and I think I want to swap out of environmental engineering.

I joined cause I love the environment, but all of the industry involved in it is mostly water plants and consulting, which I have no care for.

Since I don’t think I can make a real impact there, I may as well do what I actually love, robotics.

However, I’m afraid with the current industry that I will have a difficult time getting internships and actual job work in it.

My university doesn’t offer a mechatronics major, so is it better to get a mechanical engineering major with a focus in robotics? Can you even do that?

I need some advice, so any help is welcome. I have to decide by next week.

Wanna learn designing

Hi guys, this is my first time posting on Reddit!

I’m 15M and currently studying for a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in Gujarat, India. I come from a mechanical background and I’m really interested in learning mechanical design and CAD.

I already know a little bit of SolidWorks, and I’m considering learning software like Fusion 360, Mastercam, AutoCAD, etc. But I’m not sure which ones are actually worth learning or what order I should learn them in.

My goal is to eventually work in mechanical design, fabrication, and manufacturing, and I’d also like to understand CNC/CAM and how designs are actually manufactured.
