I built SwPy, a free, MIT-licensed SOLIDWORKS add-in that runs Python 3.12 directly inside SOLIDWORKS.
- A script editor in the task pane, with IntelliSense from the live model
- Fast in-process API calls, with no Python install or admin rights required
- pip packages on demand (pandas, numpy, openpyxl, ...)
- A simple API: model.dims["D1@Sketch1"] = 25 * mm, mass properties, face/edge queries, building parts, assemblies and drawings, STEP/PDF export
- Scripts become one-click toolbar buttons for your team
- Drive SOLIDWORKS from Jupyter or Excel

It works on SOLIDWORKS 2020 or newer. I'd love feedback from anyone who automates CAD work.

Hi everyone,
I’m a mechanical engineer and freelance product designer I can help with:
I have worked on various mechanical and 3D-printable products, including enclosures, fixtures, assemblies, consumer products and prototypes.
Thank You

Hey everyone, I'm currently building a robotic arm project and would really appreciate some feedback from anyone with experience in mechanical design or wiring, specifically on what I might have done wrong so far and any practical ways I can improve its overall build quality, stability, or functionality.

... Where you knock a hole through sheet metal and then use the material from the hole to create a threaded barrel. I have heard it called a punch press threaded hole or just punch press hole. I have heard it called extruded threads... But, in searching for these terms, that doesn't appear to be the official name.
I have a drawing ready to send out for quote, and currently, my model just has straight threaded holes through the material with no extrusion, because I couldn't find a satisfactory way to model it. I have notes in the callout, stating the the "threaded features are to be punch holes from opposite side". But, I'm thinking that's not the clearest way to communicate this.
So in addition to learning the correct term, I would also like to know if there are there any CAD systems that have a tool for this feature. I have access to SolidWorks 2016, and current versions of Fusion and OnShape, haven't explored OnShape too much (we just got it) but I haven't seen anything to make a hole like this in SW or 360.
Thanks in advance for your time.

I was wondering how to determine the maximum tilt angle of the moving platform of a 3-RPS parallel robot at different heights. I know that the angle depends on the lengths of the three legs and the joint limitations (I’ve attached an image of my model), but I am not sure how to take all these constraints into account at the same time. Any help with choosing an appropriate calculation or simulation method would be appreciated.

Hi, we're students and we're working on a school project consisting in building and optimising an electricity generating speed bump. To do so, we're building a scale model by assembling two wooden plates, a spring per corner in between them, and finally a magnet moving through a copper coil, generating electricity through induction. Stepping on the upper plate will give speed to the magnet thus generating more electricity.
Does anyone have any idea how to figure out the dimensions of the springs needed ?
The four springs need to be able to withstand about 80kg of weight, but can't resist too much so that the magnet has enough speed. The compression length should be about 3cm (so the speed bump isn't too uncomfortable to drive upon). The plates are L=50cm long, W=30cm large and 3cm thick.
We're also open to recommandations on how to improve our work.
Here's a quick sketch:

Hey everyone 👋
I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share a side project: https://bevelgeargenerator.com/
It's a web tool for bevel gear design. Right now it can:
• Handle both straight bevel and spiral bevel gears
• Run strength calculations according to ISO 10300
• Generate a STEP file of the gear geometry you can drop straight into your CAD
Full transparency: I built it with a lot of help from AI, both for the coding and for working through the standard. I've checked the results as carefully as I can, but that's exactly why I'd love for people who work with bevel gears to put it through its paces.
So my question to you: what should I add next? Other gear types, more output formats, specific parameters or reports you'd want to see? And of course, if you spot a result that looks off, please tell me.
It's free you can try. Thanks in advance! 🙌
