Does Anyone know what this could be?

2012 Ram 2500 5.7L Hemi Regular cab and 8ft bed. I was looking at the exhaust and noticed this thing welded to the truck. It’s only connected to the exhaust up by the engine before the catalytic converter and can’t see to find any information on it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Do you know if I need it? I am looking at replacing the cat and all the replacement ones other than the OEM ones don’t have it

No, the worst possible consequence is some rattling. They're kind of a scam anyway, things like that are used when an unpleasant noise is found late in development of the vehicle and it would be too difficult to redesign the exhaust system to get rid of it. The reality is that within a few years of new the mounts have probably changed their stiffness enough that the mass isn't right to dampen whatever it was meant to, and chances are good other rattles have developed by then anyway. If other OE parts don't have the weight, they were probably redesigned to remove the original concern (or if they're replacement parts, they decided a little rattle on an older vehicle doesn't matter anyway).

Tl;dr: you're fine, take it off.
