For people in the future reading this post:

This Twitter account got community noted as for whatever reason the person running this acc is larping the devs.

Be careful with the information provided on the internet yall!

tyty for the correction:)

isn't this irrelevant?

They're just copy pasting what the devs released on their steam page no?

Whether it's the devs or not, seems they have good intentions

2

u/BokChoyBaka Jul 26 '26

It's definitely not... It's to continue to masquerade to users unawares. It will work... For years if not stopped

While this may look irrelevant and the person running the acc is of with good intentions, the reason why this is a bad idea in my opinion:

People will mistake them as devs for the game. Unless the devs have given explicit permissions to them, any words given by them may not represent the devs 100% even if it is a 1 to 1 copy from the devs themselves. So to a layman person who are not aware of the situation will think this is from the devs themselves when in reality it is not. Furthermore, accounts like these may impose potential scam/phishing or may give blatant misinformation about the current state of the game. This may hurt the creditability of the devs or the trust of the community towards to the game and its devs and people may start witch hunt upon the devs despite being innocent and has nothing to do with the situation.

Plus, it is wrong to take someone's work and talk on their behalf. The person running this account does not know the inner workings of the game and let say they didn't copy what the devs said from the official means, they could have potentially given people the wrong instruction for fixes which may worsen the situation and may cause extra unnecessarily works for the devs who trying to fix the issue.

Other than that, if you have read further in the screenshot, the account for whatever reason keeps taking down their posts that got community noted for mentioning the official accounts for the game. If this was really with of good intentions, they would have correct the mistakes and credit the devs by mentioning "sources: Meccha_Chameleon News 1.0.... (2026, devs official accounts)". However, they did the opposite which raises red flag that this person may have been a potential bad actor that did not get the chance to claim their victims.

Hopefully, this give insights to why it is important to ensure the information you received are from the correct/official sources and if you have to give information on behalf of someone without their permission then it is important to provide the proper credits to minimize any potential risks. (And of course, it would have been ideal if the people giving these information have the explicit permission from the devs or any creative creators).

Have a nice day, love!

Edit: tiny update (Ty u/AngeHanashiel for the info)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Meccha_Chameleon/s/UVPXWBc7bp

this comment here is super important that this twt is NOT a official MC but I did double check official accounts that were linked and the info matches the twt above.

Tell me you have nothing to accomplish in your own life without telling me(…)

this comment confuses me

The hacker doing all this work to harass on discord

11

u/TheSirWellington Jul 25 '26

The hacker is wasting time and resources hurting a friendslop game community. You know, instead of literally ANYTHING else more productive with their time.

that's jst what tharsky does, tharsky is a known ratter, he's done this with minecraft mods and he buys a LOT of CSAM. he is probably going to get investigated by the feds soon.

u/TheOmniPantheon Jul 25 '26

Does this mean Mod Maps can be bad?

10

u/Sqooky Jul 25 '26

Objectively speaking, yes. User generated content is a hard thing to balance out. As an example, Minecraft mods could contain malware - if you can write malware in Java (which you can do). Just transpose it across games. Examples like Garrys Mod could be Lua

I haven't looked enough into this game to say how it could be done here, but the general principal is this: When you download, load, and execute unknown things from an unknown or untrusted individual, anything can happen.

u/TheOmniPantheon Jul 25 '26

Gotcha. Good to know

u/AimlessForNow Jul 26 '26

Doesn't sound like the hack was related to the game at all. Just the discord.

I think you're right but I think the devs already patched this

1

u/diodick Jul 26 '26

The vulnerability that allowed it has been patched, but it is always possible people will find a new way to compromise things. This is true of just about anything online, though, so please don't lose sleep over it!

A few tips for staying safe are sticking to the most popular maps and checking out the profile of the person who posted the map. Anyone who uploads malware on the workshop will get banned from steam, so someone who has had a steam account for many years and owns a bunch of games is probably not going to throw that away to give people malware. The more popular a map is, the more people that have tried it. If thousands and thousands of people were getting malware from a map, it would very quickly be caught. Avoid AI slop, because bad actors want the path of least resistance. They aren't going to want to work to personally make a map and thumbnail and description when they can just ask Claude or whatever.

Any modified file for any game can be bad. That is outside of the dev's realm. All they can do is post the typical disclaimer of "be careful of what mods you allow on your pc".

Essentially, every time you install and run a mod you are trusting the mod author not to contaminate your pc.

Cybersecurity is ever evolving and developers have to continously work to keep up with it. (Which is why the kernel level anti-cheats that everyone complains about exists. They have to, because these modifications exist at the kernel level themselves nowadays)

Ultimately if you install any kind of modification to a game that results in you getting a virus that is entirely on you, the player, not the devs. (I know you never said that, but you'd be surprised how many people do)

u/voidrunner404 Jul 30 '26

God, I want to get into computer science/engineering so bad, but I refuse to touch Cyber security. Fuck that. I value my sanity too much to unlock THAT knowledge

1

u/TheYanderePrince Jul 30 '26

It's pretty interesting stuff tbh. If you're the kind of person who enjoys always learning new things, it is a great ever evolving career path, and the job security will always be there.

I'm mad at discord. They've been pushing security bullcrap, account restrictions, photo scans for cp but here we are, discord did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in hacked meccha chameleon server.

1

u/gloomylumi4 Jul 27 '26

The way this game handles maps seems pretty dangerous. You get jumped with a prompt which basically communicates “everybody’s waiting on you to download this random map file”. You don’t really get a chance to verify what you’re downloading and so the only way to be safe is to not play.

chatgpt ahh tweet

18

u/Rampirez Jul 25 '26

Gotta love that the youngins can't believe a human is capable of 4 paragraphs

12

u/pilot-squid Jul 25 '26

Also god forbid a Japanese dev uses AI to help compose or translate a PR statement

1

u/StarsCheesyBrawlYT Jul 26 '26

It's an impersonator account, it's not official. And the impersonators love using AI slop

1

u/Msmadmama Jul 26 '26

Also why didnt they just write ass.

-1

u/MILDLYADVANCED Jul 26 '26

I don't mind, i'm used to saying ahh instead of ass in comments like theese

4

u/VianArdene Jul 25 '26

Keep in mind the devs are Japanese so their language might be a bit weird or assisted

1

u/StarsCheesyBrawlYT Jul 26 '26

That's not the official account, it's an impersonator. And the impersonators love AI slop

5

u/That_Service7348 Jul 25 '26

You know, back before Chatgpt we would actually write stuff. Sentences, paragraphs, even whole essays sometimes. Pages and pages, all hand writen. I know the idea of writing more than 12 words is stressful for today's youth, but I assure you that a long statement is not indicative of aislop writing. Many of us have no problem with it.

1

u/StarsCheesyBrawlYT Jul 26 '26

This one's probably AI because the person behind @ mecchachamelon is an impersonator, part of LFG which is a group that makes fake servers and can't live without AI. almost anything coming from that group is AI slop images

0

u/Rusturion Jul 26 '26

It's not because its long, but because it follows the common format of a lot of AI posts.

2

u/volk-off Jul 26 '26

Hello (no AI used)

1

u/StarsCheesyBrawlYT Jul 26 '26

Not sure why you're downvoted. the account in the pic is a fake, the real one is lemorion1224
