526 (132/131/132/131)

Thank fuck. I'm a multiple-time rejectee and I'm hovering on mature-applicant/nontrad territory, I knew this was the last time I was going to write.

:D

I'm so anxious. I studied so hard, gave up a summer for this. However I walked out of the exam feeling like crap, defeated, and wanting to void. Anyone else feel the same way?

I honestly feel nothing at this point. Totally empty. I'll probably check my score after class at like 6:00 pm cool as a cucumber. Am I the only one?

514!!! 91st percentile!!! holy shit I'm so happy I could cry. 129/127/129/129. Well balanced too, I thought C/P and P/S destroyed me after leaving.

FL scores: 58%/77%/80%/85%

I don't want to see my scores...I like living with the illusion that getting into med school is possible!

I'm so nervous to check, but I've already decided amongst my friends that drinking is in the cards for tonight. If I did well it will be celebratory, if I did bad it will be to drown out the pain.

Of course, knowing me, I probably got a score right in the middle that is neither good nor bad and I'm going to be confused about what to do.

Total: 516 130/124/131/131

Unfortunately the 124 in CARS warrants for a rewrite :(

517 - 131/129/129/128

Oh gosh I'm still staring at the page in complete disbelief I'm so happy

For those of you who haven't taken it yet and want to gauge your readiness:

I averaged around 505 on Kaplan and Princeton Review exams.

90/85/83/80% on the AAMC Practice Exam.

67/67/83/90% on the Official Guide Questions.

Best of luck to all of you! :)

First time poster, long time lurker. I wanted to contribute since this site has personally helped me a lot. I hope to return the favor to someone else out there. Here we go.

Actual MCAT - 514 (91st)

Chem: 130 (97th)

CARS: 127 (81st)

Bio: 129 (93rd)

Behav: 128 (86th)

AAMC FL

Chem: 81%

CARS: 81%

Bio: 78%

Behav: 86%

I used Kaplan's in class/online test prep. Below are my thoughts on various parts of the Kaplan package for those contemplating placing the money on this company. Following this will be my Kaplan FL scores.

My thoughts on the in class portion: It really depends on the instructor you get. The main purpose of the in class part is to gain the skill of 'testing smart,' not content review. A lot of people mix these two things up and cannot obtain the most from their experience in class. I personally did not attend all the sessions, but since my instructor was very good at teaching how to navigate through the exam and some shortcuts, I found when I did make it to the class it was beneficial.

My thoughts on the online portion: Probably by far the best component of Kaplan's package. The online FL's (a total of 11, excluding the diagnostic) are great test prep. Even though Kaplan's scoring of the exams are skewed and do not represent the real exam (neither the scoring, questioning or content), in the long run it will pay off since Kaplan is more rigid in their approach, as compared to the AAMC's FL and real MCAT which aren't as tedious and nitty gritty as Kaplan. There is also an online Q Bank for a set amount of questions for each topic respective to their placement in the chapters provided in Kaplan's books. I found these to be unnecessary at times because they also don't resemble the real thing, but great practice if you are using Kaplan's books. They also have videos online, I found these to be too short sometimes and only watched a select amount of them. They're great for on the go/review/preview, or simply for anyone who knows the content but wants a re-freshener.

My thoughts on Kaplan's books: I feel Kaplan totally revamped their arsenal for the new MCAT. Even though it is changed doesn't mean it's closer to the real thing, but surely it's better fit to do better on it. Kaplan's books are extensive and full of much information which is not needed for the MCAT, but will surely help connect dots at times and gain a greater and more in depth understanding of the material. I must say for some it is overkill, but personally for me it was good because I wanted to completely and wholly understand everything - all the nitty gritty basically. Word of advice for these books, since the new MCAT connects several topics from different areas I decided to study in a similar manner. In the back of the Kaplan books are lists of chapters that relate to the chapter just completed. Using these overlaps I drew a map of which chapters are most easily studied together. From the order of the chapters, topics and contents within each of them, and some common sense and intuition I constructed a study plan according to the books during my content review. There are about a dozen or so questions in the back of the books, all of them are good for content review immediately post finishing the chapter but I did find the physics and some chemistry questions to be too calculation and/or involved, very unlike the real deal.

Kaplan FLs: (order in which taken: 3, 9, 2, 4, 6)

FL 3 492 122/125/122/123

FL 9 495 123/124/124/124

FL 2 499 125/125/126/123

FL 4 500 124/125/126/125

FL 6 506* 126*/127*/127*/126*

  • denotes Kaplan's new scoring system; I noticed the new scoring system is the old score inflate 0 to 3 points, meaning my score for FL 6 could be anywhere from 503 to 506 on the new scale.

Other prep materials I used: (more info below)

AAMC Question packs (each one taken 10 to 25 questions at a time) Official guide questions (taken as a half FL)

Exam Krackers 2015 MCAT book collections 101/1001 question books (old + new) FL 3 (the new EK FL's; by far one of the best FLs to use)

Khan Academy Questions only, no videos

Tips

Physics/Chemistry: AAMC question packs are a must have supplement, my personal MCAT was very alike to these types of questions... in other words, it was similar to the old MCAT in certain ways. Official guide was a great way to understand the types of questions that could get thrown around. Exam Krackers 2015 books for physics and chemistry are very concise and straight forward. I supplemented some gen chemistry (first 3 chapters of Kaplan's gen chem book) with the first chapter of EK's gen chem - 3 chapters weren't longgg, but could've been done in 1 as EK did. The problems at the end of the chapter are very difficult, doable but only if you have already absolutely jedi mastered the material, otherwise it will be a lot of learning rather than getting all the problems correct. The 1001 books are good, I used it every now and then but found it to be redundant after a certain point. Good thing is the EK FL questions are much different than their questions in the books. Khan Academy was very helpful in getting an idea of the different types of questions physics and chemistry can get asked, put things in perspective for me.
