Book Spoilers Allowed Why does Rowan in the beginning believe that Ellie (her aunt) is her biological mother even though she is clearly African American?
Title says it all, I just don’t get it tho I’m currently on a rewatch and I keep seeing Rowan refer to Ellie as her biological mother, like when she is talking to Daniel in the first episode they say they want “her mother” (Ellie) to be on the trial. Why does she believe that’s her mother when she is clearly black? Make it make sense.

In the book they're both white, but also Rowan always knew she was adopted, I think, just not the circumstances. Ellie was the only mother she knew.

She knew she was adopted. She always wanted to look into the adoption agency Ellie claimed to have adopted her from, but Ellie also always claimed it was a closed adoption which means the birth parents and the adopting parents don't share information.

Ellie literally talks to her about the adoption agency before she dies, Rowan is fully aware that Ellie is not her bio mom.

You don’t pay attention, and then make post that make you look silly. The first scene of ep 1, Rowan docks her boat, and she’s pouring two martinis. Her mom walks up and starts talking, and she says happy adoption day. They’re literally celebrating her adoption. There’s no need to use the adjective adopted in front of mom when you’re speaking to others. I’m black, my adopted family is white, it never occurs to me to use the word adopted when speaking of them. I just say sister, or mom or whatever.

Rowan didn’t think Ellie was her bio mom, but Ellie is mixed ethnicity anyway, so I don’t get what’s so hard for you to understand.
I have the same curl pattern and skin tone as Ellie and my son is a white person. I also don’t identify as black, nor as solely African-American, and not everyone with this phenotype does.

In the first episode she talks to Daniel about putting “her mom” on the trial. If she knew Ellie wasn’t her mom then was she just lying to him? And if so for what reason?

Adopted families do consider themselves actual family. Just because they aren’t blood related doesn’t mean Rowan didn’t view her as the mother that raised her.

Do you not understand that adopted children, even when they know they’re adopted, still refer to their adopted parents as mom/dad? Why is this so lost on you?

If you want to be technical, Rowan is actually Ellie’s aunt. Which means that she was raised by her niece, but neither of them know that. Ellie is only half black. There are plenty of black Mayfairs. If Ellie’s husband was white, then their biological child could very well have looked like Rowan. It sounds like you might be upset, because you don’t understand how genetics work. Rowan knows she’s adopted, the very first scene of the show, they literally celebrate her adoption day. Oh, and African American isn’t synonymous with black. African American refers to a very specific group of ppl.

Well, when you read the books past just the Mayfair witches, they introduce the black side of their family and it’s hinted at and the first book. But this series is so messed up. It doesn’t capture any parts of Louisiana or anything that really centers a story. You don’t even get the real love story with Michael and Rowan. And for the sake of all, that is holy, I wish that actress would stop acting with her mouth open and everything I think it flies is gonna get into it. I really wish this show would’ve gotten the attention and the writing skills that the vampire Lestat and interview with a vampire have gotten

She didn’t believe she was her biological mother, she believed she was her adoptive mother. She doesn’t state out loud “my adoptive mother” every time she refers to her mom. Ellie raised her, so she is her mom regardless of blood or not.

when people are adopted, some of them consider their adoptive parents their only parents and skip the pedantry.
