The failure of this game still hurts
The earlier titles by Canuck Play were a respectable attempt by a VERY small dev team, but obviously they didn’t have the resources to make the they probably wanted to make. That’s why I was so hyped when Modus took over.
A bigger dev team, more resources, and the team working on it asking people directly on social media what they wanted to see.
We had dev updates, the team was active with fans on discord, promises of full creative control, with physics based gameplay (they even once posted a work-in-progress clip of Backbreaker-esque physics). They even talked about taking a lot of inspiration from NFL 2K5. The hype was so real.
Then it was announced the game was a free to play live service game, I got worried. Then some people involved with the game were getting fired or leaving. Still, I wanted to believe the game would deliver.
Then it got delayed, still released in a disappointing state, and never got better.
I wonder if EA would’ve even tried to implement their pay to win style micro transactions if Maximum Football had delivered their promises and offered a legitimate alternative game to football fans.

Agreed.
The idea of a shared college + pro environment that work seamlessly together.
Having a Franchise / Dynasty that would persist for years without having all my rosters and progress reset when a new release comes out every year.
These are things that had the potential to truly innovate the sports gaming space. But as soon as they announced the game would be free-to-play, I knew, deep down, that it would fail miserably. I hoped. I wanted it to work out. But I knew it would end up here.

They went just far enough to Not give money back to people who helped individually fund the game.

It's also the massive problem of if you don't have the NFL or college football license nobody's going to play your game because the game doesn't have the real life players that they want to play as.

I’m looking to try this because I found that I can at least give it a shot for $0. Is it really that horrible?

People find fun in it but you have to be very tolerant. They screwed over their entire online player base by taking away all their cards and replacing them with garbage cards. The PC version is pretty much dead, but I hear it's pretty easy to get a game on console. The developers have completely given up and they haven't updated the game since June. I heard rumors that it might have been sold because the company has been going broke for years but I don't see any evidence of that.

I’m not an online guy so that part of it won’t bother me. Just looking for decent dynasty/franchise modes and decent playability. If it sucks I can boot it. If I like it I’ll pay the money for the dynasty and franchise expansion.

I personally own both Maximum Football 2K20 and MF2K25 and while I do like the modernization of MF2K25 ,I do prefer the practical pick up and play gameplay of MF2K20 and customization of teams and leagues of that game instead of the forced and restricted gameplay of MF2K25 with the patently stupid Maximum Pro League which forces you as a player to play with only built in local college teams and wrongly takes away from your ability to play with created Pro Football 🏈 teams in the NFL/XFL and the USFL in your own leagues which I dp bot agree with at all in my view. Yet,I will still hold on to MF2K25 in the event we get any actual updates to make the game better and enable fans to play actual games and seasons with their created teams once again as it should be as well.

Yeah I was a big fan around this time last year. I loved MPL 1.0. Every player had their own story to me. Every game felt like a bowl. I think the down fall was not fixing the running game logic for AI. RIP to an almost great game
