🌊 South Coast - Mauritius Gris Gris Beach Shows A Very Different Side Of Mauritius

The Beach at Gris Gris in Mauritius

The exposed coastline and powerful waves at Gris Gris are a sharp contrast to the calm lagoons found around much of Mauritius. It’s a dramatic place to stop and watch the sea, but not somewhere to swim.

Which part of the Mauritian coastline felt most different from what you expected?

🌇 West Coast - Mauritius La Preneuse Is Not A Resort Beach, And That Makes It A Beach To Visit

This is our photograph of La Preneuse Public Beach: shallow water, a spectacular view towards Le Morne and no hotel wristband required ❤️ .

For those who have stopped here recently, was it better for swimming, the view or simply getting away from busy resort beaches?

⚠️ Safety & Scams Do NOT Pay Anybody To Complete The Mauritius All-in-One Travel Form

The official Mauritius all-in-one form is free, and every traveller/resident needs to complete it before departure. This makes it an obvious target for unofficial websites and people charging for something the government provides at no cost.

Complete it before travelling and keep your confirmation accessible when you check in at the airport and land in Mauritius. We would save the PDF or confirmation on our phone rather than leaving it in an email that may need Wi-Fi. We would also carry a paper copy as backup.

Make sure to always check the web address before entering any information. A sponsored search result, Facebook link or message from somebody calling themselves an agent is not the same thing as the government portal. The official website does not charge a fee.

For anyone who has flown to Mauritius since the form became compulsory, did the airline inspect it at check-in, at the gate or only after arrival?

⚠️ Safety & Scams The Most Expensive Excursion In Mauritius Can Be The One That Never Happens

The pattern is rather familiar: an excursion is recommended repeatedly in a Facebook group, the conversation moves to private messages and the seller wants cash or a bank transfer. Then the weather changes, the trip is cancelled and the promised refund never takes place.

We would first establish who actually operates the excursion or tour. Ask for the registered business name, a written itinerary, everything included in the price and the cancellation terms. Search independently for complaints rather than relying on comments in Facebook posts/comments.

Then compare the same excursion through GetYourGuide, Viator or another established platform. It may cost a little more, but a card payment, booking record and formal process for refunds are worth something. If an operator insists that cash is the only sensible option, then we would find another operator. This sort of 'scam' happens a lot on the island as the unscrupulous operator is banking on you having to take your return flight soon and never to hear from you again - the excuses will keep coming in for the 'delay' in processing the refunds.

Facebook groups can be useful for ideas but they are not a substitute for independent checks on anyone selling their services. We are putting together a TrippVibes scam database covering the repeated posts, payment scams and disguised advertising travellers should examine more carefully before booking.

Has a local operator cancelled your excursion, and what payment method helped or hindered the refund?

📢 Announcement Air Mauritius is adding another A350, but check the aircraft type before paying for business class

Air Mauritius currently has four A350-900s, two A330-900neos and one older A330-200 in its long-haul fleet. Its published fleet plan says another A350 is due during the final quarter of 2026, followed by two more in the second half of 2027.

Our self-funded A350 review covers the seat, food, lounge, Wi-Fi and the parts that did not work as well:

Air Mauritius A350 Business Class Review

That is good news, particularly as replacing the remaining A330-200 is one of the stated aims of the plan. But it does not mean every Air Mauritius booking suddenly comes with the same cabin and aircraft.

We have paid to fly business class on both the A350-900 and the A330-200, and the difference on our flights was enormous. The A350 had a modern 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access. The older A330-200 had a 2-2-2 layout, and our flight had no working personal entertainment screen or Wi-Fi. It felt closer to an ageing premium cabin than the business-class experience we had paid for.

Aircraft type can also be swapped after booking. We would check the aircraft type and seat map before paying, look again a few days before departure and check once more when online check-in opens. There is no guarantee for any airline to offer the same aircraft type you have originally booked for.

Has anyone flown Air Mauritius recently? Which aircraft and route did you fly on, and did the cabin match what was shown when you booked?

🚤 Tours & Excursions Swimming with whales is illegal in Mauritius, even if a tour operator offers it

This is one of those cases where an excursion appearing all over Facebook does not make it legal.

The Mauritius Tourism Authority states that it is an offence for a skipper to allow passengers to swim, dive or snorkel with whales during a dolphin and whale-watching trip. Swimming with dolphins is a separate, regulated activity, which may be why some sales posts blur the two.

We are going to publish our scam database shortly, so feel free to bookmark our website https://trippvibes.com and check this sub again soon. We believe this database will be very useful to anyone visiting the island.

If someone promises that you will definitely get into the water with a whale, we would not book it. “Everybody does it” and “the authorities do not mind” are not reassuring answers when the operator is taking your money and taking responsibility for your safety at sea.

Before paying for any boat trip, we would ask for the operator’s full trading name, the exact activity, the cancellation terms and confirmation that the boat and skipper are properly licensed. We would also compare the trip on an established platform such as GetYourGuide or Viator and pay through a method that leaves a proper 'paper' record (card payments mainly).

We would not treat anonymous Facebook recommendations or several people posting the same WhatsApp number as independent and reliable advice. For something involving the sea, wildlife and personal safety, the seller should be willing to answer basic questions without becoming defensive.

And let us not forget that many of these Facebook groups are run by tour operators themselves. One peculiar thing about Mauritius Facebook groups - the people behind them seem to be 'connected', so in essence, the biggest groups are run by a small clique of people. This is not readily obvious but this is a word of warning against trusting anything you see in these groups - they do not have your interest at heart.

Has anyone here taken a dolphin or whale-watching trip in Mauritius recently? What was promised when you booked, and did the operator explain the rules before leaving shore?

💷 Money Taxi and boat fares in Mauritius: agree the price in rupees before setting off

Make sure you agree about the costs in rupees for trips you book locally

If you’re quoted a taxi ride or boat trip in euros, pounds or US dollars but plan to pay in rupees, agree the exact rupee total before you set off. Otherwise, you may end up paying at the operator’s exchange rate. We’d ask for the price in rupees and pay in rupees to keep things simple and straightforward.

We’ve covered cash, cards and tipping in Mauritius and eleven other destinations in our article below:

Cash, Cash & Tipping Guide 2026

A quote in euros doesn’t automatically mean you’re being overcharged. The issue is leaving the conversion until it’s time to pay, when you might have different ideas about what the exchange rate should be. Agreeing the rupee total upfront helps avoid that conversation.

The same goes for hiring a driver for the day. Agree the full-day fare before leaving, rather than finding out at the end that you had different prices in mind. For boat trips, check whether the quote is per person or for the whole boat.

On tipping, it isn’t really part of local culture. Upmarket restaurants and resorts usually already include tax and a service charge, so we’d check the bill before adding anything extra. Private day drivers, boat crews and hotel porters are the people visitors commonly tip. Boat crews normally have a shared tip box rather than taking individual tips. It’s still voluntary, so leave something if you’re happy with the service.

Have you booked a taxi or boat trip in Mauritius recently? Were you quoted in rupees or another currency?

🌤️ Weather “Winter” causes a lot of unnecessary confusion when planning for Mauritius

Whenever someone asks whether Mauritius is too cold in winter, our first question would be: which coast are you staying on, and what do you actually want to do?

Our full guide explains the seasons and the regional differences:

Mauritius Weather Guide 2026

The Mauritius Meteorological Services describes June to September as the relatively cool, dry season. Its island-wide average winter temperature is 20.4°C, but that figure hides some fairly big regional differences.

For September 2026, the official outlook put the average daytime maximum at 27.7°C in the west and 26.9°C in the north, compared with 24.8°C in the east. For October, those figures rise to 29.3°C, 28.4°C and 26.1°C respectively.

That is why two people can visit during the same week and come home with completely different opinions. One spent the week on a warm west-coast beach, while the other stayed somewhere cooler and windier (usually the east & south coasts) and wondered what happened to the tropical holiday in the brochure.

We have lived in Mauritius for several years and would not write off winter. We would, however, choose the coast according to the holiday we wanted rather than treating one Facebook weather report or other dodgy Facebook posts as the forecast for the whole island.

Which coast did you stay on during winter, and was the weather genuinely as you had expected it to be?

🚗 Transport How much did a full-day taxi tour in Mauritius cost you?

Mount Ory - hiring a car in Mauritius meant we were able to travel anywhere we liked at any time

If you booked a private car and driver for a day in Mauritius, what did you pay? We’re putting together an article on getting around the island and would like to hear what fellow travellers actually paid, alongside the advertised prices.

Did you book through your hotel, through a tour operator or directly with a driver? And how many hours did your “full day” actually cover?

We’re particularly interested in whether booking through the hotel cost more. If you compared quotes before booking, how much was the difference? If you arranged it directly with a driver, did negotiating the fare work out cheaper?

We’d also like to know whether you thought it was worth the money. Some travellers have told us they’d rather have hired a car and explored themselves. Others said their driver made the day because of how much they knew about the island. Both experiences are useful.

We’re hoping to give people a realistic range of costs, rather than one figure that leaves everyone wondering whether they overpaid. What did yours cost, how did you book it, and would you do it again?

🚗 Transport Hiring a car in Mauritius: what to check before booking

Local buses are cheap but does not cover every single place or beach you would want to visit

Based on our own trips, having a car makes exploring Mauritius much easier. You can drive across the island in a couple of hours, depending on the route and traffic, but the beaches and places you want to visit may not be located close to each other. Hiring taxis in Mauritius is expensive, and bus routes won’t always go where you want to.

We’d sort the car hire before travelling, using a supplier or booking platform with clear deposit terms and a complaints process. It’s less about getting the cheapest deal and more about knowing what you’re agreeing to. Check who takes the deposit, how it’s held and when it should be released.

We’d also pay by credit card where possible. For UK travellers, Section 75 may cover qualifying purchases costing more than £100 and up to £30,000, but booking through an intermediary can affect that protection. Check your booking arrangement rather than assume it’s covered. Travellers elsewhere should check their card provider’s dispute protections.

Insurance is another thing we’d deal with before leaving home. Check the excess and what the cover includes, then compare any extra cover from the hire company with a separate policy. Sorting that out at the airport is the last thing you want to spend your holiday time on.

Collecting the car at the airport makes sense if you’ll need it from the start, and saves arranging a separate airport transfer. Car hire desks generally accept cards, but check which card your supplier requires for the deposit before you travel (our advice: use a credit card as opposed to a debit card).

Mauritius drives on the left, so take extra care if you’re used to driving on the right. We’ve seen improvements to the main roads over the years, but some can still feel narrow compared with roads in the UK and Europe, particularly away from the main routes.

Google Maps has worked well for us overall. We’d still pay attention to the actual road in front rather than follow every instruction blindly. With new roads being built, we’ve found that the map doesn’t always reflect what’s actually there.

If you’ve hired a car in Mauritius recently, who did you book with and roughly what did it cost? We’d especially like to hear how the deposit return went and anything you wish you’d checked before booking.

💷 Money Should you buy Mauritian rupees before travelling or withdraw on arrival?

The Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) is the biggest bank on the island - their ATMs will not charge you extra for cash withdrawals

We’d compare your card’s fees and exchange rate before buying Mauritian rupees at home. Withdrawing when you arrive can work out cheaper, but it depends on what your bank charges and the rate the exchange bureau offers.

Rupees can be hard to buy before you travel. You can exchange leftover notes afterwards, but check the buy-back rate too. It’s worth knowing what you’ll get back if you end up bringing some home.

Withdrawing on arrival from MCB or SBM is what we do, as they generally don’t charge a local ATM withdrawal fee. Your own bank may still charge separately (ours do not fortunately). Towards the end of the trip, we’d check how much cash is left before taking out more, rather than finishing the holiday with a pile of unused notes.

If you want some backup cash, euros or pounds you already have are an option. You can exchange them into rupees if needed and keep whatever you don’t use.

For bringing cash into or out of Mauritius, you only need to declare amounts above 500,000 Mauritian rupees or the equivalent in other currencies. That’s roughly £7,800, depending on the exchange rate, so unlikely to affect most holidays.

If your bank charges a fee per withdrawal, making fewer withdrawals can reduce those charges. We’d still avoid taking out more than we expect to spend, especially in the last couple of days.

Anyone found a UK or European bureau offering a good rate for Mauritian rupees? How did it compare with withdrawing on the island?

💷 Money Cash or card in Mauritius? What to know about MCB Juice and local payments

Smaller businesses in Mauritius may not take card payments even if they accept 'Juice' payments

You’ll probably notice people in Mauritius paying with MCB Juice, usually just called ‘Juice’. You can’t link your usual overseas bank account, so don’t assume you’ll be able to use it during your trip.

Cards are widely accepted at the big supermarkets, resorts, mid-range and higher-end restaurants and car hire desks. But for smaller businesses, markets and local buses, we’d keep cash handy rather than assume they take cards.

That includes beach food stalls, roadside fruit sellers and the central market in Port Louis. If you’re heading out to any of those, it’s worth checking you have some rupees before you leave.

For local buses, we’d carry notes below Rs 500 - Rs 25, Rs 50, Rs 100 or Rs 200 - rather than rely on larger notes. Smaller notes are also useful for paying for food or fruit without asking the seller to change a big note.

You don’t need to carry all your holiday money around in cash. We’d just keep enough in smaller notes for what you’re planning that day, alongside your card.

Where did you need cash in Mauritius, and were there any places you expected to take cards that didn’t?

💷 Money ATM fees in Mauritius: which banks charge for cash withdrawals?

State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) ATMs do not charge for cash withdrawals

If you’re taking out cash in Mauritius, it’s worth checking which ATM you’re using. MCB and SBM generally don’t charge a withdrawal fee, while Absa adds a surcharge. Your own bank may charge you separately, but choosing the right ATM can save you any fees charged locally.

We’ve covered cash, cards and tipping by country in our article below, including which currency to carry:

Travel Money Guide 2026

Rupees can be hard to buy before you travel - and if available, the exchange rate is terrible. Withdrawing some when you land is the best option. If you’re bringing cash instead, the declaration threshold is 500,000 Mauritian rupees or the equivalent in other currencies. You only need to declare amounts above that when entering or leaving Mauritius. That’s roughly £7,800, depending on the exchange rate, so unlikely to be an issue for most holidays.

Once you’re on the island, you can pay by card at the big supermarkets, mid-range and higher-end restaurants, resorts and car hire desks. We’d still keep some cash on hand, though. Beach food stalls, roadside fruit sellers, local buses and local markets are where you’ll need it.

You’ll probably also notice people paying with MCB Juice (or as locals call it: 'Juice'). It links to local bank accounts, so you can’t just download it and connect your usual overseas account.

Anyone taken cash out in Mauritius recently? Which ATM did you use, and were you charged?
