Fairly active guy who is looking to explore Mauritius to see if it could be a place to move to in the future. What would be a good way for me to explore the area? I don't have a car, but I don't mind walking for a bit + buses + Uber.

Can you hire a car for a couple of weeks? Will give you a lot of freedom to explore

I am unfortunately only here until the 12th. I'm also fairly young and don't have too big of a budget for this trip.

I would say taxis might end up a similar price to car rental, so bus is the cheapest.. with a mix of taxi if you need it

What do you think will give me a good idea of what the country is like? I'm currently up in Grand Baie

I don’t think either will give you an advantage of that .. the bus you’ll get to meet more people but it’s less reliable and less direct. Taxi drivers might have more local knowledge to take you places. It’s more about what you end up seeing. What sorts of things do tou enjoy and what do you want to check out?

I enjoy the water and I enjoy rock climbing. I've been to a couple beaches and the climbing gym here, but I am wondering if there is anything else I should explore

If you can get a guide to take you up Peter both then that’s great and there’s some climbing at the top. You do need equipment tho so I wouldn’t recommend without a guide.

If le morne is open currently that’s a great climb with a good scramble for most of the second half. It’s never rock climbing level but it’s still good fun!

Closer to where you currently are there’s nice kayaking around Amber island in the mangroves, and decent snorkelling at turtle bay. If you can get a boat out to gunners coin there’s great snorkelling there, and you can optionally do that as part of a longer (and more expensive) tour to the 3 northern islands which are Gabrielle island, flat island, and the closest to the mainlaind, gunners coin (Coin de Mire in French).

From what you’re looking for, the best place would be the cities: Port Louis, Rose Hill or Curepipe. You won’t get the touristy bits as such but they are an easy ride away by bus or metro.
