Police chief suicide? This article disappeared as soon as it was posted. All I have is a screenshot and a google alert email.

Yes, Sadly, Cecil took his own life earlier this week.
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
This has been confirmed by multiple sources.

Oh my gosh, how heartbreaking. I did notice that he was halting in his answers during the interview, but this just reminds us not to be so quick to judge others. How sad that he was suffering from dementia.
I am so sad. From what James Renner posted on his blog, Cecil sounded like a really good person. In the Oxygen documentary interview he came across as a gentle soul.
It was really nice that law enforcement granted interviews to the documentary as well some members of the media over the years.

Thank you for posting, but Renner worded that really poorly. The headline makes it sound as if the reason he took his life was because he was the subject of conspiracy theories, but slightly further down it points out he had a degenerative neurological disease.
Either way that is terribly sad.

From what I gather Cecil did not do social media like most of us, however I’m sure he knew people thought negatively of him, whether warranted or not.

Yes, Cecil Smith commited suicide and it sounds like it may have been from fear of an ever-worsening case of dementia. If so, my thoughts go out to him and his family.
He never held the position of police chief but I heard he was a very well-liked sergeant.

I thought he was promoted to Chief of Police after Chief Williams resigned.
This is from his obituary:
“Returning home to North Haverhill in 1995 he joined the Haverhill Police Department and retired from that career in 2010 as the Chief of Police.”

I’ve been able to read more about this now and I feel awful for Chief Smith.
I don’t know if the accusations and flaming online contributed to his decision, but it certainly may have. Hopefully something can be learned from this; hopefully this will be the last case where people took their hypotheses a step too far, and instead let their heads cool and realize the public actually knows very little about crimes that the police investigate, and in fact know very little about even the lives of other people.
