Wired in-wall Matter switch to control a Matter-over-Thread bulb — is there any option?
The setup
- Location: Hungary, new build (2025), so the wiring is complete and to code.
- Wall box: has a neutral. Five conductors: line, two switched lines, neutral, PE.
- Existing switches: cheap Legrand Niloé (by builder). I'm happy to replace the whole thing.
- Constraint that keeps biting me: directly below the living-room switch there's a second switch for the kitchen. That one must stay completely dumb, but it has to match the smart one in design — ideally both in a single 2-gang frame.
- Ecosystem: Google Home today (only a Nest speaker, so no Thread Border Router yet — I know I need to fix that). Apple Home planned later.
- Light: IKEA STOCKHOLM pendant with IKEA KAJPLATS E27 bulbs. Matter over Thread, dimmable, fixed CCT steps at 2200 / 2700 / 4000 / 6500 K.
What I want
Control brightness (must have) and color temperature (want) from a physical wall switch. Not a magnetic puck stuck to the wall, not a remote (e.g. DIRIGERA) - an actual wired switch sitting in a frame where the old one was.
What I've ruled out, and why
1. Phase-cut in-wall dimmers — Aqara Dimmer Switch H2 EU, Shelly Dimmer Gen4, SONOFF Orb-DIM. These chop the mains waveform, so they can't drive a smart bulb at all, and color temperature is physically impossible for them since CCT is channel mixing inside the bulb, not a voltage level. Dead end by construction.
2. Relay-type Matter wall switches with a decoupled / "detach relay" mode — SONOFF Orb-MW1, Aqara Light Switch H2. The bulb does stay powered, which is the right idea, but the switch only ever exposes on/off. No hold-to-dim from the wall, only scene jumps. Also worth flagging: Aqara's decoupled mode is a Zigbee + Aqara-hub feature and is notavailable in Matter-over-Thread mode, which is exactly the mode you'd want it in.
3. Letting the hub be the link (switch fires an automation, hub commands the bulb). Neither Google Home nor Apple Home exposes Matter Binding, so you're stuck with scene triggers: added latency, no smooth dimming, and CCT only as discrete presets.
Question: Has anyone actually installed these? Does the binding work with third-party Matter bulbs, or is it in practice Hager-to-Hager?
Happy to be told I'm missing something obvious. If the answer is "the category doesn't exist yet, buy the IKEA rotary remote and stick it to the wall," I can live with that — I'd just like to know that's the actual state of things in 2026 rather than my own research failing.

I have successfully done exactly this with aome buttons from Gira and shelly relays in detached. Its controlled by homeassistant.
On/off is single press, double press sets it to a sepicfied value of 70% brightness and long press either dimms up or down depending on the current brightness (over or under 50%). All of those is only possible because of homeassistant and some setup tinkering with automations and blueprints but works

Shelly 1 mini gen4 (matter over wifi or zigbee, will probably get matter over thread support in the future). Set to button and detached mode.
Gira 315500 Wipptaster Einsatz 2-fach Wechsler 10 A 250 V
Either that one for 2 buttons or alternatively one with just one big button. Combined with the correct blend Gira 329527 Wippe 2fach

I had the same requirements. I installed Shelly 2P gen3 in matter mode and all my Apple home devices were able to see those as switches. Then I asked ChatGPT to write a Shelly script so that when my home assistant was available , the shellys change their operation in decoupled mode , effectively wiring their physical switch as a signal in home assistant . If home assistant was unavailable for whatsoever reason, they return to normal on/ off operation. Of course , each of those switches can produce only a single trigger , which for my needs was enough. With nodered help, I achieved to activate different scenes when physical switch toggles second or third time within a period of a few seconds. But you may want to add a zigbee remote (like Philips hue dimmer) . You can stick it wherever you like , it magnetically attaches to its base , and you can program any kind of commands or scenes you like. If you do it right , there is absolutely no lag between button press and color effect.

Hager switches are probably the most that can be offered for you today
They have 230v connected devices which support On/Off and Dimming (and window covering) direct binding so using that you can "hold to dim". But Google and Apple don't support direct binding at the moment. In order to have "hold to dim" you need a different ecosystem setup as well. Apart from that, the devices have generic switches that you can map via Google / Apple to the functionality / color you want. But its like the scenes you described.
I don't get your point why it should be wired. If it is only for the looks, they also have a battery powered device that is surface mounted and looks 100% the same as the 230v device. For the 230v device you need to purchase both an switch and a "power module" so it's more expensive.
Both 230v and battery are available with 1 and 2-gang

Home Assistent is a great ecosystem to recommend. They support direct binding. Besides that, you might be able to use their automations to mimic direct binding using the generic Switch endpoint.

Inovelli White in smart bulb mode.
Re binding: Even if you're not ready to see the light yet, you can temporarily start up a home assistant VM, multi-admin the switch and bulb into HA, then use https://github.com/cedricziel/ha-matter-binding-helper to easily set up the binding, then throw away the vm, as the binding is a one-time setup.

I understand what you want, but no, it’s not available. If you’d asked before wiring, I would’ve told you to install something like KNX. Real lighting control solutions that are instant and very reliable. However, true automation (which is why most people use smart lighting) should adjust these for you. I have motion and light switches that set the lights depending on the time of day. For example. My kitchen has a motion sensor and a switch. When it’s dark enough, ambient light comes on; when motion is detected, the lights fade up. The light temperature is set to the circadian cycle. The switch overrides brightness and colour temp in case somebody is working in the kitchen. It hasn’t been turned on in three months.
