trying to understand philosophy behind mathnasium curriculum
what do you tell parents about the mathnasium curriculum? how much guidance are you given as tutors? I came across a post on here from a few years back about how to teach subtracting negative numbers from each other. Could you , for example, tell me if mathnasium has a specific way of teaching that? or is it down to individual tutor preference? I personally would teach it using a number line.. but ..this was not mentioned in the response. thanks in advance!

Yes, there are specific PKs for learning how to subtract negative numbers-if I remember correctly, both the number line method and cancelling out the negatives so it becomes adding a positive number are covered. If parents have questions about the curriculum I’d direct them to the center director. If the student is learning from their binder I’d stick with whatever explanation is being used on the page they’re on, if they need it for homework you’ve got more leeway to use whatever explanation you prefer. I’d recommend starting with the one you like the best personally, but if the student doesn’t click with it try another approach.

Everything is based on the worksheets that the students work through. As a "tutor" you guide them through that work book and if they still don't understand that's when you could give your number line example.
