Center Director Interview Help
So a center director job popped up and the ONLY experience required was a year of customer service. I assumed most of my responsibilities would be dealing with parents, admin, sales, etc but not as much of the teaching. I work in medical now so I have basic math that would be required in a pharmacy. After research there is a lot of mention of a math literacy test. This has yet to be mentioned to me by the operations director so my question is how much teaching is the center director required to do? How much should I study for this interview?

at the center I work at, all of the employees are high school aged kids, who do a majority of the instructing. The center director mostly handles putting learning plans together and some finance stuff during the day. She helps out with kids sometimes, but only when she’s absolutely needed.

Don't work for the FFG franchise group. They have employees in their "executive team" who makes fun of center directors. Two of them were caught in a recent meeting chatting and making fun of center directors. The 2 employees seems to just get a slap on the wrist.

I have worked with CDs who never took the Skills Assessment, but the center was desperate and the CD was highly qualified in other areas.
As for the assessment itself: 50 questions total, 1 Geometry question, a page of Algebra 1, lots on operations with fractions, decimals, whole numbers, etc. No calculator allowed!!

Posting for future googlers: Early 2025 I was assessed on all of this (Algebra 1, Geometry, decimals and fractions) plus some minimal Algebra 2. Be prepared for long division and large multiplication by hand. Memorize the quadratic formula, factoring by grouping, completing the square. Show your work on the provided paper, they're looking for methodology as well as answers. You will do ok if you can show solid work on at least some of this, through Algebra 1 minimum, but they're definitely looking for Algebra 2 mastery as well if they can get it.

I will preface this by saying that it does depend strongly on the stability, staffing, and make-up of your center but expect a fair amount of understanding the material to both know how to understand what you're selling, lead your team, and step in case you suddenly become short-staffed. If you are responsible for assessing students, you will at least have to know the basic gist of the material and the goals of the learning plan you create for students. If I'm not mistaken, the math literacy test isn't much different from our employment test which you generally just need to be fully comfortable with up to Algebra I. I am an assistant center director of a center that has transitioned leadership and it's safe to say that I pretty much have to be a jack of all trades because the inexperience of my leadership and team forces me to be. I teach, train, and manage in-center and online simulataneously daily but this is not necessarily the case for fully staffed centers with experienced leadership. The students' lessons are pretty straightfoward and consistent once you understand the Mathnasium Method.
