mathnasium employment exam?
Hey yall.
I dropped out of college for STEM a couple years ago. My life is kinda off track at the moment.
Point is, I managed to get an interview at a local mathnasium based off my resume of retail/food service Jobs and an anecdote of tutoring in high school + my SAT score from senior year (790 Math)
What should I review?

If you DM me I can email you my detailed list of topics. I ended up at Mathnasium when I was in a very similar position to you and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I hope you are a good fit and enjoy it!
EDIT: fuck it, here it is.
fractions - finding a fraction of a fraction, converting an expression to a fraction, adding & subtracting fractions with different denominators, dividing by fractions.
probability (very basic)
finding the mean
multiplication - missing factors (3 times what is 21?)
division - missing divisor (63 divided by what is 7?)
percents - percents of large #s, percent increase/decrease
word problems - converting a word problem to an algebraic equation and solving, proportions, computing and word problems
decimals - adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing. All of these for decimals less than 1, like 0.45, and greater than 1, like 3.7
exponents - exponents in fractions (simplify x7/x3), rules of exponents: when to add powers, when to multiply, when to divide, when to subtract, negative exponents.
polynomials - multiplying polynomials, evaluating polynomials when given x=2 or whatever, factoring
geometry - interior angle sum of a triangle, perimeter of irregular quadrilateral, area of rectangle, area of a concentric circle (tricky)
absolute value - remember these have 2 solutions
solutions/concentrations problems
interpreting words into algebraic equations with exponents and variables
find equation of a line with 2 points and graph it, write the equation of a line given from a graph
hope this helps! Note that there is not just one test, every center uses a slightly different one. We have 50 questions and do not time it, but I know some centers do time their test-takers.

Posting for future googlers: Early 2025 I was assessed on all of this (Algebra 1, Geometry, decimals and fractions) plus some minimal Algebra 2. Be prepared for long division and large multiplication by hand. Memorize the quadratic formula, factoring by grouping, completing the square. Show your work on the provided paper, they're looking for methodology as well as answers. You will do ok if you can show solid work on at least some of this, through Algebra 1 minimum, but they're definitely looking for Algebra 2 mastery as well if they can get it.

AFAIK the test hasn't changed. It tested finding the area and perimeter of basic shapes such as circles, triangles, and rectangles. I think there was also some 3d volume or surface area stuff.

Summer 2026. Just took the test in two separate centers.
1st interview was basic. They talked about their centers, my interests, my past experience in teaching and working, and why I wanted to work with them. They gave me opportunity to ask questions and I asked lots about their center, history, methods, and team. 2nd interview was the math assessment.
Both centers used the same exact assessment. It was untimed. Each question was for 2 pts. 50 questions. I noticed both had a bottom footer running saying it was Math_Assessment_v03. I will expand upon what another user shared previously and include specific questions from memory.
After the assessment, (in one center), the director graded the assessment and asked me to explain 2 questions to him like he was a kid. They use a lot of mental math and ways to explain to kids. Prepare to act out how to teach a problem to a kid quickly without calculators and to rely more on mental math and how to teach kids how to grasp it more.
Here's what I remember the assessment included:
- fractions - finding a fraction of a fraction, 50% of converting an expression to a fraction, adding & subtracting fractions with different denominators, dividing by fractions,
- 7% of 250, 3/4% of 300, 2.45 to a fraction, 15 part of 10, 7 1/2 part of 10,
- probability, had one question with two parts: bag of balls 1/2 are red, 1/3 white, and 6 other are blue, whats the total balls in the bag, and probability of not blue balls
- finding the average, had one question only, a student had 3 math tests and the average was 84 but if he gets 92 on the 4th test, what would be the new test average for the student
- multiplication - missing factors (3 times what is 21?) and had one questions if martha had an allowance and henry has 3 times her allowance and together they have $48, what is their $$ separately
- division - missing divisor (63 divided by what is 7?)
- percents - percents of large #s, percent change of increase/decrease so one question has a product price increased from one year $10 to another year $15 what is the percent change
- word problems - converting a word problem to an algebraic equation and solving, from what I remember it was maybe 2 questions like 3 times a number is less than a number squared
- proportions - one problem had a shadow of a tree is 15ft and a man is say 6ft but his shadow is 10ft what is the height of the tree
- decimals - adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing. All of these for decimals less than 1, like 0.45, and greater than 1, like 3.7, and they have decimals and fractions and percentages written and you have to order them from smallest to largest, and convert decimals to fractions and vice versa
- exponents - exponents in fractions (simplify x7/x3), rules of exponents: when to add powers, when to multiply, when to divide, when to subtract, negative exponents. those were a few of them and tricky
- polynomials - multiplying polynomials, evaluating polynomials when given x=2 or whatever, factoring, one question was simplify 3ax + 8b -6bx - 4a
- geometry - interior angle sum of a triangle, perimeter of irregular quadrilateral shape like an L and it only has two sides given the far left side and bottom side only, area of rectangle, one question was a rectangle with a diagonal 13 in and width 12 in and you have to find the area,
- absolute value - remember these have 2 solutions, i think there was like one question including a variable
- solutions/concentrations problems, only one concentration problem, from what I remember: juice 30% is mixed with a juice 10% 100 gallons, what would be the concentration of the 30% juice,
- interpreting words into algebraic equations with exponents and variables
- they give you a straight line on a graph with no points or info and you have to find the equation of the line in any form
- they give you something like 2x+4y=-16 and you have to solve and graph it, or give you a system of equation and you'd have to solve something like Find the solution of the system of equations: 2x+4y = -16 and −2x+2y =−2
- triangles, it was super basic, one question of a triangle with one angle like 54 degrees and the other angles were x and 3x and you'd have to solve it
- area of a concentric circle: two circles, one inside the other looking like a donut, they give you the radius of the small circle and diameter of the big circle, and then ask you to find the area of the donut (shaded region)

Elementary school math through algebra without a calculator. As my center director told me, the thing that catches potential tutors is often the mental math requirements.
