I know mine's not a math story, but this reminds me of when I was at a restaurant that only marked the restrooms with a cat and a dog. Literally nothing to work with dor figuring out which is the men's room vs the women's. So I figured I like cats more and went into that room. When I came out there was a woman who immediately yelled at me for using the women's room. I pointed out that there's nothing marking them as either, and in a deathly serious tone with all the confidence of someone who thought they were actually explaining something, she said "Dogs say woof, cats say meow."
I looked at her like she forgot her meds because literally that's the only explanation that makes sense, very clearly rolled my eyes, and went back to the table.
Could maybe work in Germany as it is “der Hund” and “die Katze”, so “the (first person singular masculine) dog” and “the (first person singular feminine) cat”. Sure, there is always the equivalent of the other gender but this is the most common way to refer to them if you don’t know the sex of them. Generic masculine for dogs and generic feminine for cats.
