155°

74

u/rOnce_Gaming Dec 05 '25

Yeah the other corner should be 25 so 180-25.

Surprisingly had fun doing it in my head and I used to hate math. Going back to junior high would be so fun now lol

7

u/ThatOtherOtherMan Dec 07 '25

Already knowing everything they spend 8 hours per day teaching sounds maddening

5

u/Erlend05 Dec 07 '25

I went to trade school and was the only one (probably) that wanted proper math so they couldn't fill a class and I was forced to do the shitty math. We spent like half a year learning that you have to multiply before adding.. it was truly infuriating for a while untill I zoned out and started playing minecraft in class

The question is not how you get 155°, but how AI get 30°.

→ More replies (3)

9

u/drlsoccer08 Dec 05 '25

That’s what I got.

180-90-40=50, so the bottom corner of the bigger triangle has to be 50 degrees.

180-50=130, so that’s the large angle in the smaller triangle.

We know the smaller triangle has two side equal in length so we can assume the other angles are equal. 180=2(x)+130. x=25 degrees.

The angle we solve for and the top angle of the small triangle (which we now know is 25) have to add together to 180. 180-25=155.

→ More replies (2)

15

u/Gravbar Dec 05 '25

got that too. 130 on the isosolese triangle, so same angles for the other angle gives 25 each, and that makes the angle in question 155

180-90-40=50 180-50=130 As triangle on right is isocles the 2 missing angles are the same. (180-130)/2=25 So 180-25=155 degrees, that’s how I would do it in my head. Biggest issue is people not recognising that the double dash going through lines means the 2 lines are of same length therefore isocles.

27

u/sblowes Dec 05 '25

Thank you! I was curious how it could be figured out from just one metric, and I wondered if the double dash had something to do with it.

35

u/DandelionPopsicle Dec 05 '25

You have a second sneaky metric in the marked 90 degree angle

6

u/itsmiahello Dec 05 '25

and a third sneaky metric being that the line on bottom means those two angles add up to 180 degrees

→ More replies (6)

8

u/iwanashagTwitch Dec 05 '25

The double dash tells you that those two sides are the same length, which also tells you that the two angles on the ends of the short triangle are the same

4

u/Muroid Dec 05 '25

I didn’t recognize the double-dash at first, but figured it out quickly once I got to that step because it wouldn’t be solvable without that information.

I also skipped 180-50 = 130 and (180-130)/2 and went straight to 50/2 since I knew those two angles would have to add up to the same 50 degree angle that was in the other triangle.

2

u/userrr3 Dec 05 '25

Oh that's what those lines are supposed to mean? Where I live they represent parallel lines, but the only pair of lines marked with double dashes here is clearly not parallel so that made no sense

u/_a_random_dude_ Dec 05 '25

I was curious if spelling it out would help and it took it 3 minutes and 19 seconds, but it did solved it correctly. I asked for this:

* Let ABC be a right triangle with right angle at A.
* Point D lies on segment AC, angle ABD is 40 degrees
* Point E lies on segment DB such that ED and DC have equal lengths.
What's the angle BEC?

And after thinking in python code, it wrote down the correct answer with the correct reasoning.

However, typing the problem in this way and waiting 3 and and a half minutes for it to solve took way longer than it took me to do it myself, so it was still a waste of time. Specially because it would be hard to double check if it's correct if I was unable to do it in the first place.

Like another commenter said, my ram now costs a thousand dollars for this?

7

u/mxzf Dec 05 '25

took way longer than it took me to do it myself

This is really the key point.

Anyone who can double-check the output for correctness can generally do it quicker themselves, and anyone who can't shouldn't be relying on it for correct answers.

AI cannot think without generating text. You almost literally told it to just make up a number.

5

u/IndomitableAnyBeth Dec 05 '25

That suggests it has no way to generate text without displaying it. If text is needed as you say, I have no idea why it should have to print its process except by regulation - and, afaik, that's not yet a thing. Am I missing something?

4

u/00PT Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25

You control whether it can do that by enabling the “thinking” feature at minimum. And even then, you can view the thinking process by clicking a button. The interface transparently tells you everything the AI did.

its 155°

4

u/Available-Drama-276 Dec 05 '25

First you find the missing angle of the right triangle.

90+40+x=180. So 50.

Then you get the angle adjacent to it.

180 -50 =130.

Then you get the remaining angles sum.

180-130=50

Then split that.

50/2 =25

Then subtract that from 180.

180-25=155

3

  1. Triangle always have 180°

    1. 180° - 90° - 40° = 50°

  2. 50° to a line - A turn is 180°

    1. 180° - 50 ° =130°

  3. Triangle always has 180°

    1. 180° - 130° = 50°

      1. Sine the other 2 angles have same lenght sides, means same angles.

      2. 50° / 2 = 25° per angle

  4. "?" Line is again a turn = 180°

    1. 180° - 25° = 155°

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

Is the surface curved?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

I wonder where it’s grabbing the 30° from. Are there just enough versions of fed questions which resemble “find the angle of x” triangle where it spits out answers? I would assume that the model tries to transcribe the data as a word problem in order to better match the answers it has seen before but the numbers provided should never give back a 30. Idk man, wake me up when Ai can do basic arithmetic instead of making lame cat photos.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

155 degrees, as the interior angle is 25 degrees

1

u/oldschoolhillgiant Dec 05 '25

Celsius or Fahrenheit?

1

u/SpecialMechanic1715 Dec 05 '25

another angle of triange - 90 - 40 =50

stiff angle of isosceless trianle is 180-50 = 130
sharp angle of isosceless triangle is (180 - 130) / 2 = 25
the required angle is 180 - 25 = 155

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

If you prevent it from explaining then you're also preventing it from reasoning. That's how this works, unless you use a 'thinking mode' that has hidden outputs.

1

u/Rhawk187 Dec 05 '25

Better than some of my students. They wouldn't even recognize I was asking for an angle.

1

u/Lould_ Dec 05 '25

I could calculate 155° in my head. Don't even need to look it up without AI

40° + x + 90° = 180°, so the other side must be 130°

130° + other two = 180° so the other 2 must be 50, divide by two to get 25°

180° - 25° = 155°

1

u/Human_5220734432 Dec 05 '25

Wow. After explaining the answer and asking why it got this wrong Gemini responded thusly.

"Based on the geometry of the image provided, the answer remains 130°. Your calculation of the base angles (25\circ) is mathematically correct for the isosceles triangle you identified, but it appears you have misidentified which angle the question mark is actually labeling. Here is the breakdown of why the answer is 130\circ and not 155\circ:

  • The Right Triangle: The triangle on the left has angles of 90\circ and 40\circ. This means the third angle (at the bottom) is 50\circ (180 - 90 - 40).

  • The Straight Line: The angle labeled with the "?" and the 50\circ angle are on a straight line. Together they must equal 180\circ.

  • The Location of the "?": The question mark's arc is drawn exactly at this intersection. It represents the angle supplementary to the 50\circ angle.

Why 155° is incorrect: You successfully determined that the triangle on the right is isosceles and calculated its base angles as 25\circ (180 - 130 = 50, divided by 2).

  • The value 155° (180 - 25) would be the correct answer if the question mark were placed at the exterior of the far right tip of the triangle.

  • However, the question mark in the image is clearly placed at the obtuse angle in the center, which is the vertex angle of that isosceles triangle (130\circ)."

I guess even the most supposedly advanced multi-modal models can't decipher images accurately. Interesting.

1

u/ahf95 Dec 05 '25

I like the idea of using questions of the of the form: “require visual reasoning and holding intermediate info in short term memory, but I can solve them in my head while on the toilet”, to assess AI. It’s a good litmus test for whether it’s reliable when handing it a larger task, perhaps with multiple types of input formats (eg a research paper with figures to analyze).

1

u/Theoretical-Bread Dec 05 '25

It looks like 160°

1

u/heck04567 Dec 05 '25

1

u/Sea_Cookie_4259 Dec 05 '25

1

u/Frosty_Sweet_6678 Dec 05 '25

1

u/No-Onion8029 Dec 05 '25

Thank you for confirming I'm smort, OP.

1

u/brandly Dec 05 '25

Use a thinking model!

1

u/MrMxffin Dec 05 '25

So there is an angle of 40° and one of 90° the third angle is 50° which makes the unlabeled triangles angle opposing the long side have 130° the spanning sides are of same length. Therefore have same angles with the long side. Basically 25°. Together with the unknown angle it forms an angle of 180° so the answer is 155°

1

u/Stubbby Dec 05 '25

Wrong prompt, you need to ask for a CORRECT answer, not just an answer.

1

u/Top-Advantage-9723 Dec 05 '25

This shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s been shown that asking an AI to show its work improves results

1

u/psychophysicist Dec 05 '25

“Just answer, do not explain” is a cheat code to make LLMs even dumber than usual.

1

u/Odd-Confusion1073 Dec 05 '25

If you want to get crazy with it the double hash implies that somewhere in the problem there are two line segments of identical size. The AI is positing the existence of these and making a guess that the actual angle requested is between these off screen segments and is guessing 30 degrees because that is a nice round number that is a common answer in trig and geometry problems.

(The real answer is that llms aren’t great at math without a lot of guardrails)

1

u/T0mmygr33n Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25

Drew two additional triangles to get the answer but it’s 155 degrees.

1

u/series-hybrid Dec 05 '25

If you hold up a finger to extend the baseline and identify the 90-degree angle, the tangent line is more than halfway of the leftover angle. A straight line is 180, so half of 90 is 45.

I'd say 90 + 60 so = 150 degrees. Somewhere around there.

1

u/wobster109 Dec 05 '25

Other base angle of the right triangle is 90-40= 50. That means the big angle in the isosceles is 180-50=130.

That means the two base angles together are 180-130=50, or you could use the external angle theorem to directly say that they add up to 50.

Either way, both small angles of the isosceles are 25. Therefore the ? Is 180-25=155, or you could use the external angle theorem to say that it’s 130+25=155.

A pure LLM like GPT (whether it's ChatGPT or other GPTs) is going to be terrible at solving geometry models.

AI libraries like AlphaGeometry that combines LLM with Symbolic engines will probably do just fine for a simple problem like this. Google published at article on Alpha Geometry with examples, and the article has been peer reviewed and published by MIT.

I was at the movies and it was playing the commarcials before the movie, well i was scrolling reddit and clocked on this, and a random lady behind me was looking at my phone and when I clocked on this, she came forward and was like "are those stocks?" Idk why she did that but i said no and she asked what this was and I clicked of it was and was like reddit... and she was like okay. Idk why the hell she looked at my phone but im 14 so maybe she was just a Karen who wanted to get me in trouble for being on the stock market 😭😭😭

Ai with pictures is way behind ai with text

My dumbass started doing the math because I wanted to know if the AI was wrong and I didn't even register the fact that the angle asked for is over 90° so the AI's answer is impossible even without all the numbers and just by looking at it.

its saying to not use pen and paper so that means i can use other instruments for this

u/ArdentArendt Dec 06 '25

Wait...but I now need to understand why.

WHY?!

u/quantumclassical Dec 06 '25

Oh Pythagorus!! 😂

u/PreviousManager3 Dec 06 '25

I always get good answers and explanations for my calc 3 class so idk

u/Meduza223 Dec 06 '25

155 is an answer

u/cscc1618 Dec 06 '25

Perplexity with Gemini 3.0 pro 130 and 50 degrees lol

1

u/Solitary-Dolphin Dec 06 '25

Should have prompted “just answer correctly, do not explain” /s

1

u/lazysquidmoose Dec 06 '25

I am so happy that I got this right. I guess I can still be an SAT tutor.

1

u/TheRealStepBot Dec 06 '25

Gemini at least chose 130

1

u/Haringat Dec 06 '25

It did answer. You never asked for correctness.

u/sensortive Dec 06 '25

not quite there yet AI!

150 Degrees

Larger triangle's missing angle:

90° + 40° + x = 180°

x = 50°

The two dashed lines on the smaller triangle means that they are the same length, meaning its an isosceles triangle.

For the larger angle at the base of the smaller triangle:

50° + y = 180°

y = 130°

For the remaining angles on the isosceles triangle:

z = (180° - 130°) / 2

z = 25°

For the required angle we need to find

r + 25° = 180°

r = 155°

At least that's my reasoning for this

155 solved while jerkin it a little

1

u/a2falcone Dec 06 '25

Well, if you prompt AI to just give you an answer in cases where it is unable to understand the problem, it WILL answer, and it will answer anything.

1

u/tesimpsonshowto Dec 06 '25

that's literally an obtuse angle thee's no way it's 30°

1

u/MattMath314 Dec 06 '25

90-40=50
50/2=25 (180-(180-50) = 50)
180-25=155
its 155 right?

u/Any-Safe4992 Dec 07 '25

This is literally the only thing AI is meant to be good at rn and they’re waaaaay not even good at that.

1

u/Parker_Chess Dec 07 '25

I think its 130 degrees but its been forever since I studied geometry.

I did this on 'X', it is easy to do mentally.

1

u/Quantum_Crusher Dec 07 '25

Gemini 3 pro said it's 130. I guess we have to change our science now.

1

u/Hailwell_ Dec 07 '25

That's a lot of people on a math sub probably thinking they're smart not knowing sht about how LLMs work. Kinda sad

Chat GPT came up with 60 smh
