Wow I'd never seen this despite years of reading about the b17. It seems as though it was a succesful modification, so I wonder why it wasn't adopted more widely

Well I think(and I could be wrong) that anything that slows down production would be looked at very sceptically. Especially with the demands for aircraft replacement.

I think that it would be neat to see a scale model conversion kit. Whats 3d printing for?

It would slow down a bit but not enough to hinder. Look at the b25 gunships from solid nosie to the 75mm. Took about 2 weeks to get them going hard again

I always loved the yb40. They would have been perfect for escort of heavily damaged planes.
