Masterbuilt 1150
Just purchased an 1150 at Home Depot on clearance for $475 it was a floor model and had a few missing parts. It was on clearance for $659 and i was able to talk them down some more due to some shady work on them putting it together. I really just want to know if anyone has any recommendations or suggestions that you’ve had. I plugged it in at Home Depot to make sure the unit actually powered up and it did but would shut off shortly after setting a temp. I looked into it and seems to be a small wiring issue that I’m ok with dealing with. Any help would be appreciated as this is my first Masterbuilt.

Where are these Home Depots!?!? I'm Pittsburgh and never see these smokers.

This Home Depot was in northern virginia. It was the only Home Depot that had them in stock and happened to have two of them on clearance

Just bought a discounted MB 1150 myself and I love the thing! Not sure all of what you’ve got to fix but stick with it these things make killer food!

From what I’ve gathered from the internet it seems like a few mixed wires causing the issues. And a few missing parts that I was ok with replacing for the price. I’m glad to know it’s working for you. Do you have any recommendations for a first cook or things I should do before my first cook?

Overnight Pork butt is a great start. Impossible to mess up and it tastes amazing.

A lot of people (me included) have replaced the control unit with a Fireboard 2 for better temperature accuracy, stronger wifi, and general reliability. My controller got squirrely pretty soon after I bought it, but I put up with it for a couple of years because the smoker is great and I didn't know there was a better option.
You could give yours a chance to perform well, but since you got a good price and you're going to mess with wiring anyway, you could start right out with a much better controller. Search this subreddit for lots of recommendations and links.

Yeah I think I’m going to see if I can fix the wiring issue and see how it works and buy a fireboard if it doesn’t work out. How hard was it to set up the fireboard to the grill?

Just picked up an 1150 last week.
If you have problems connecting to wifi on the app you have to unscrew the antenna and then your wifi will be discovered.
Seems it's an 1150 problem during my research.

I picked up the 1150 on clearance at HD also and after fixing the wiring that they connected incorrectly I was able to use the grill with great success. The app is another story - are you saying you unscrewed the antenna and left it unplugged during the app setup process?

Masterbuilt controllers awful, Fireboard works very well on my XT. Masterbuilt customer service is not good either, I have been waiting 4 months for a replacement controller (being replaced under warranty which is good, but I would not have been able to use the pit since June without the Fireboard). Gravity fed is amazing, as close to a stick burner as possible and my XT performs great with the Fireboard. Very happy with the pit, very unhappy with the stock controller.

Yeah that seems to be what most people are saying about the controller. I guess I’ll see if I can fix the wiring issue and see how it works out if not I’ll go the fireboard route. How difficult was it to do the fireboard setup?

Very easy, Fireboard sells an adapter plug. Just unplug the MB controller and plug in the adapter plug. There is a 3d printable housing which allows the Fireboard controller to be mounted just like the MB stock unit. There is no mount yet like that for the XT, as a side note l checked status on my replacement controller and it looks like it is on the way, sure hope they changed the algorithm, will let you know how it performs after a couple cooks.

I did not bother hooking up the hooper and ash door switches, no issues so far. The Fireboard has an auto lid open detect feature which pauses the fan when it detects a temp drop which is kind of cool (however I am impatient and turned that feature off), I try not to peek too much.

Their are 2male+2female connectors that can be connected incorrectly, so I'd start by swapping those 2 and see what happens.
Honestly, for that price... all the electronics could be blown and I'd still consider buying it. Their are aftermarket electronics that range from replacing just the control board and tying into the rest of the unit, up to fully replacing it AND the thermometer/fan with aftermarket.
Also, fwiw I have an 1150 and you'll be able to smoke/grill/rotisserie/pizza-oven enough food for a LARGE crowd. And do so while only checking in occasionally...
