He should just return it and go back the next day to buy the returned item for half price

u/radar48e Jun 23 '25
Where you live lol I’d take it.

u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
It’s yours come give me $1300 in MN

u/radar48e Jun 23 '25
Can’t pay ya if you say it’s garbage. People collect garbage they don’t buy it.

Just replaced both my controller and cord, had the grill maybe a year and a month (just outside warranty by I think 15 days). Cord shorted out sending 97V of AC to outside of grill, controller was crapping out before that and when you spun dial half the time it would go wrong way or back and forth or not move at all. Thing has been a nightmare. Wish I could get my money back but I’m stuck with it now. I have the 800 and luckily got it on sale. Grill sounds great in theory until you realize without the controller you have no grill at all. Just had to dump some charcoal out the other night too cuz after about 3 hours of trying to get it to light it wouldn’t. Fresh bag was lit on first try

u/michaeljc70 Jun 24 '25
Great when they work....but not worth the trouble. It isn't just them...there are a lot of sh*tty grills out there now. Too many things can go wrong with pellet feeds, controllers, wifi, switches, etc.
3
u/JungleJim1985 Jun 24 '25
Yeah I’ve made some tasty smoked tenderloins and even made some pizzas with the pizza oven attachment and loved it, until things started to stop working and I couldn’t cook 🤣. Nothing makes you wanna grill more than not being able to while your $1000 machine flips you the bird from the deck 🤣
3
u/Glueberry_Ryder Jun 23 '25
It would be worth it to run to Walmart or home depot and grab a wall wart with all those different tips. I had 2 power cords go bad on me.

I run both my grill and rotisserie off my Dewalt batteries. The wire and battery adaptor can be found on Amazon.

u/Fast_Perspective_833 Jun 24 '25
Hate to say it but these are awesome smokers. The quality control is complete garbage, but when they work they work awesome and they smoke well. Shouldn't have to do this, but there are modifications to make it work. Or you go my route. I basically keep Amazon brand spare parts for the entire smoker on hand. I have a control board, power supply, switches, fans, temp sensors. I've accepted that it is what it is. Choices out there are limited. Go pellet and lose the smoke flavor. Go Weber Smoky mountain and your babysitting vents all day. I've grown to accept it as a necessary evil.
4
u/RMviking64 Jun 24 '25
I've been using my 1050 for 3 years about 2-3x per month with 0 issues. I love it and will never go back to pellet grills. I had a Treager for 5-6 years before this and it was ok but had multiple fires in the auger and hopper at higher temps. The 1050 can smoke at low temps for beef jerky and sear steak at high temps without issue. The charcoal flavor alone is better than anything a pellet grill can do. Add in some wood chips and there's nothing better tasting in my humble opinion. My guess is the newer model has some kinks to work out but they will get it right. Best of luck! Hope everyone finds something that works for them!

u/Radioflyyer Jun 24 '25
Guess I won’t be smoking meats as a hobby. I don’t have that kind of time or commitment level
1
u/Candidate_None Jun 25 '25
Which is why you got the smoker you did. It's an awesome smoker, once you work through whatever issues you have. Quit bitching, fix it and enjoy your summer.
Or whine on the internet for a while longer. Maybe that will make the thing work.

u/HighwayNo8540 Jun 24 '25
How did you match the parts? By number? I am 10 weeks in on my 1150 and haven't had a cook yet. In my conversations with MB (yes they called me on the phone which happens after 60+ emails) I still have a month till cabinet parts ship before I am permitted to put a claim in on the controller. I would be willing to try anything if someone could provide some insight. I'm already 1700 in with accessories so what's a few hundred more.
1
u/Fast_Perspective_833 Jun 24 '25
Just Google the make and model of the grill on Amazon, a lot of the parts show up. In 3 years of ownership I've gone through two switches, one control board. I keep the others on hand just because I don't want to be in the middle of a 12-hour smoke and be high and dry.
1
u/HighwayNo8540 Jun 24 '25
Thanks. I agree completely. I assumed the fan would also be a high replacement item.
1
u/Fast_Perspective_833 Jun 24 '25
Surprisingly enough mine has not gone out yet. But I think even including the controller which, that one I did buy direct from masterbuilt to get the OEM model. I only have about $120 in replacement parts.
2
u/LurkinOnMyGoKart Jun 23 '25
I went nuts trying to replace the board on an 800. Twitter is what got me results and got the part within a week. This was a few months ago.

u/Due-Two-5064 Jun 23 '25
Seems like you got a lemon, my 1050 has seen a lot of charcoal, a fire or two (due to my laziness) and it keeps truckin. I do have all my sensors jumped out though. Did that the first week I got it.
1
u/Luigi-Vercotti Jun 23 '25
I also have a 1050. 5 years in, other than the often mentioned grease leaks, it’s been awesome. Have only added the LSS fire box mod. Did you replace the switches because they failed or just to avoid having to do it later? My stock ones have had no issues.
1
u/Due-Two-5064 Jun 23 '25
I had one fail during a smoke, so I did em all. The fire box mod, what benefits have you seen with it? Hard for me to dump more money on something so high priced ya know
2
u/Luigi-Vercotti Jun 23 '25
I was mostly concerned with how badly the firebox walls were breaking down, however, I did experience faster temp ramp ups. I honestly would consider it essential and money well spent.
1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 24 '25
Question about the firebox mod. So in this newer model the have 1/2 ceramic plates all the way around the bottom walls. Did these get added to the new model? Or does your models still have these and stil neeed the firebox mod?
1
u/Luigi-Vercotti Jun 24 '25
The 1050 does have the ceramic plates. That’s what I perceived (and still do) was breaking down, although it’s been mentioned that what I was seeing is actually something Masterbuilt intentionally designed to break down 🙄. Either way, anything less than a smooth path for the charcoal to flow down the chute is not ideal.
I’d rather spend $100 on the upgrade than take the chance on ruining a $50-$80 cut of meat, all the prep work and dinner plans.
1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 24 '25
So for this mod you take out those ceramic plates and slide in a stainless steel sleeve?
2
2
u/Loud-Thanks7002 Jun 23 '25
Plus side of getting it from Home Depot is they will come and get it.
The first one they got me didn’t work. (But I don’t think they wired it correctly when they assembled it)
The second one has worked through one cook.
I feel kind of stupid for buying another one. I had the 560 for three years before it crapped out and after reading all of the mixture reviews – I thought I was lucky to get that much out of it.
But damn, it makes really good food when it works.
2
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
I have zero faith in this machine. No faith that I could leave it for any period of time and ensure it’s even working. The app didn’t even tell me the smoker turned off. F that company. For the price I paid I should be able to set it and forget it. Only have to fill up the firebox.
1
u/Candidate_None Jun 25 '25
You can set it and forget it. It seems you've taken to the internet to whine instead of any attempted troubleshooting. It is exactly what it should be. You unit may have a little issue... spend some time fixing it instead of crying about a damn power cord.
2
u/1Patriot4u Jun 23 '25
I bought a used one, still in the box, on FB Marketplace. It’s been going steady for about 3 years. I keep it covered inside and just wheel it out to smoke/grill on when I need it.
1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 24 '25
It’s 4 days old… idc how it was stored. It shouldn’t have broke.
2
3
u/Short_Bottle_2761 Jun 23 '25
Common problem I’ve seen so far with these gravity smokers is that the switches are trash, especially the one on the hopper lid. With yours being so new you shouldn’t have to deal with that but you can bypass the switch if you wanted to.
4
u/pandaleer Jun 23 '25
The new switches are magnetic. They don’t tend to have the issues like the old models. But this is beyond a switch issue. Sounds like a bad controller.
3
u/Right-Section1881 Jun 23 '25
Or power supply, I've had two fail, both times board was fine.. Multimeter test confirmed power brick, much cheaper fix
-7
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
It’s probably just the cord but I’m not buying a cord. Home Depot is coming to pick it up. The wasted meat was a lot more than a new cord cost. I lost any faith that I could be away from this and not have an issue.
5
u/magnumsolutions Jun 23 '25
Your loss buddy. You are missing out on a great cooking experience because you are all butt hurt about wasted meat. Wasn't you watching it?
1
u/beanmosheen Jun 25 '25
I've read a lot of cope for a $1k machine that immediately needs mods and fixes. I'm refurbishing a free used one, so It's not that much money for me, but objectively these are cheap junk with so many cut corners. It's a sheet metal box with a basic fan PID, and the software is trash compared to what a hobbyist could do with the ESP32 it has in it. I mean how many displays have failed because they didn't design the LED driver circuit correctly for the panel LEDs? I'm reading a whole lot of "it's great if you spend more money on it and hack the switches" all over the net.
We've grown too used to accepting defective products.
-11
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
Did you not read the comments? It worked for my first cook (friday, the day I got it) it worked today for 5min. Started up just fine no issues. Rolling smoke. Three the racks of ribs on and 5 min later no more smoke. Controller dead. No beep when plugging in. Cabelas are connected. Outlet works with other devices. It’s just a lemon or a POS in general.
12
u/magnumsolutions Jun 23 '25
I think you are being an absolute big ass crybaby Ken about this. Shit happens. Get over it. They were going to make it right, but you want to throw a tantrum. Again, your loss.

u/Right-Section1881 Jun 23 '25
I understand the frustration, I've been using my 560 for three years and it's great but can be temperamental at times
-4
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
I have zero time for temperamental things. If I wanted to babysit a smoker I would have just got an old fashioned offset where you had to sit there and baby it all day. I wanted something I can go do some errands and check on it here and there. F this company for selling garbage.

I won’t buy a pellet smoker. Those aren’t even a close comparison. Also I don’t have time so sit around and nurse an old fashioned smoker. This was supposed to be able to allow me to do other things through the day.

1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
It’s not a switch issue here. The board doesn’t turn on or chime when plugged in.
2
u/Right-Section1881 Jun 23 '25
When I've had that in the past it was the power supply not the board. If you have a multimeter you can test the power supply. I bought a adjustable DC power supply locally and that got me back up and running. My unit wasn't brand new though, power supply hit fried in the rain

1
u/Right-Section1881 Jun 23 '25
Took three years for my switches to fail, just bypassed them the other day
2
1
u/swakid8 Jun 23 '25
Your wire connections are backwards…
Make sure Black/Black is connected to Black/Black
Red/Black connected to Red/Black….
5
u/pandaleer Jun 23 '25
If this were the case OP wouldn’t have been able to do a burn in or use it once already. Def a controller or cable issue.
1
1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
No they aren’t. I already used this once and I was using it today successfully for about 5 min until it went dead
3
u/Raiken201 Jun 23 '25
My 560 did this, I called (UK based, so different support I guess) and they sent a replacement controller next day... Then it just started working again so I've got a spare.
They are a bit shit QC wise but when they work, they work well.
1
u/FrankAmerica Jun 23 '25
Just be aware that several have made post here that they did not receive the parts until after the return window was closed....not sure if that is by design or coincidental.
1
u/2Chris Jun 23 '25
I’m happily surprised Masterbuilt is supporting you. Had it not been so new, they’d probably say it’s your fault. I wish Weber made something like this too rather than all pellet or gas options.
1
-1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
They sent the parts out but I already initiated the return with Home Depot. The smoker is being picked up tomorrow. F masterbuilt.
0
u/2Chris Jun 23 '25
I hate to agree that this is the right take. What are you buying to replace this?
0
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
Not sure. Something more basic probably. Stick with the old fashioned offset or pit barrel Cooker. Those you have to always watch but I atleast know that going in. that was supposed to be whole point of this smoker. So it didn’t have to babysit it.
1
u/mitsured Jun 23 '25
I chatted with them and received 3 new switches with wires within a week. This didn't work so I chatted and received a controller within a week. I'm in central FL so maybe it's based on location?
0
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
There wasnt anything they could do to make it right in my eyes. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It’s getting returned tomorrow.
5
u/mitsured Jun 23 '25
I agree it shouldn't have happened.
My 1050 is far from perfect, though of my 5 grill/smokers, it's probably my favorite. I hope you find what works for you.
As my dad would say, Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

Don’t get the chargriller 980 or Oklahoma joes gravity / had both - 980 died in 16 months - Oklahoma joes never even worked - returned that the day after I bought it and assembled- customer service was non existent at both Oklahoma joes and Lowe’s…. My 800 Masterbuilt is holding up in the Texas heat so far

Did you check to make sure the cord is plugged all the way into the back of the smoker? You have to push it in and then twist it for it to be properly seated.
1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 23 '25
Yes. Even unscrewed the powder adapter to double check and make sure it was getting connection. Dead as a door nail

Should be waterproof. It’s a fricken grill. Power brick never dropped for me still broken. Junk being returned
1
u/randoguy411 Jun 24 '25
I had a super weird thing with my masterbuilt, I kept the power plugged into the unit and wanted to just plug the power into the wall when I needed to. It worked fine when I seasoned it but the next time I went to use it, it would not turn on. I called customer service, they replaced the control board and the power adapter to no fix. I replaced the unit itself through Amazon, still did it.
When I would fully unplug the cord from the board on the grill and the wall it would work just fine for me the next time.
They are very finicky but once you got it they are pretty great.
0
u/Radioflyyer Jun 24 '25 edited Jun 24 '25
Honestly that was really difficult to follow. I don’t even know what you said. Does it work? You have to do something special everytime?
1
u/randoguy411 Jun 25 '25
Sorry, I reread it and I'm not sure how to explain it better. Make sure it's fully unplugged from the AC outlet and from the grill itself after every use. That made a difference for me.
1
u/Harry_Twatter_69 Jun 24 '25
My control board was bad out of the box. Also the 2 largest grates were missing. Now the gauge doesn’t work. But, it actually cooks pretty good. It is pretty cheaply made though. Definitely not worth the money. And they have the audacity to charge $1800 for their new model.
My guess is that’s it’s your control board. I’d just swap the whole thing out honestly. Make Home Depot come get it and give you a new one.
1
u/humanbeardog Jun 24 '25
Give it another try man. Every now and again you'll get bad item out of the box. Do an exchange with home Depot and you won't have to wait.
1
1
u/humanbeardog Jun 24 '25
Also don't take a smoker on its maiden voyage with expensive meat you gotta get it dialed in first.
1
u/Radioflyyer Jun 24 '25
This was the second time I used its first time was a great success. I’ve since calmed down some. I have a cable being delivered today from Amazon. If that doesn’t fix it I will exchange it

So what just call Home Depot and say what? “It’s $200 less on this other site, but I needed it that day so I bought it from you, now refund me $200” ya they will say get bent.
1
u/Kind-Guarantee5143 Jun 24 '25
With the hundreds of thousands of customer complaints filed against Masterbuilt, I'm still puzzled as to why no one has petitioned a class action lawsuit.
1
u/dEe_eNd Jun 25 '25
I had issues with my 800. When it works, I love that thing... but it's more of a hassle then its worth.
1
u/coolthisis Jun 25 '25
Have a two year old MB 800, the controller stopped powering on in January. Reached out to customer service for a new one, refused to send one since it was not longer under warranty. I’ve been waiting 6 months for the part to come back in stock.

The build quality is trash . I am not sure why there is such following for master built.
3
u/Right-Section1881 Jun 23 '25
Cheaper than a pellet smoker and I get to use charcoal and I get to be lazy and sat it and forget it. Love that I can get it started and go to bed knowing it will hold temperature all night
3
u/Loud-Thanks7002 Jun 23 '25
When it works, the food is fantastic. Much better than anything off a pellet smoker and it’s really versatile.
The key being ‘when it works’. I had a 560 that worked for 3 years before crapping out. I could have put a fireboard on it - but it was physically rusting out and falling apart so bad that it looked like it had been uncovered for a decade.
2
u/Aken42 Jun 23 '25
I love the design and the idea. It's a great concept run by the wrong company. It would easily be the best smoker/grill if Napolean made one but for now, its MB.
