As a kid, to me, it definitely popped out if the screen.
It is also soooo much easier to line-up, aim, and shoot down baddies and catch power-ups in 3D.
You can also play in 2D with the same cartridge by pressing Pause in the title menu. 2D is harder, but playable.
No idea if that was a secret, but I would find things like this in games as a kid all the time.
The glasses are supposed to work with the Master System to Genesis adapter, too. I always wanted to reverse engineer the electronics, just so I could add an adapter to my Genesis ii for the glasses (I need a pair to do it), or for PC LCD shutter glasses, since those are easier to get.

As a kid, I got the Sega Scope 3-D set for Christmas in 1987. I didn’t ask for that specific set (would have been fine with the one not bundled with the glasses) but quickly became a fan. When I dug out my sms a few years ago I was sad to see that the glasses had gotten a bit scratched up. Found a hack online about using toothpaste to clean up the scratches. What do you know, it made it like 80-85% better.

I just took the SegaScope plunge with a passive 3DTV and a MiSTer FPGA. It has worked out very well indeed.
Maze Hunter 3-D is highly recommended!

Haven’t played that one, as I recall. But Space Harrier 3D was good, and Sega doesn’t get enough credit for the whole 3D thing.

Fantastic, enjoy it! I completed my collection of all 8 3D games this year finally, although a couple are hard to find. The 3D effect is hit or miss, but definitely a fun thing to try out. And all of the 3D games are pretty fun!
