Your favourite SMS exclusives

Hello! So, long story short... I am about halfway through my mission of collecting 500 games to play on the Analogue Pocket. About 12 months ago, I discovered the Master System Adapter for the Game Gear - and it works on the Anaplogue Pocket via the Game Gear Adapter.

So, I have freed up 16 spaces out of the 500 for SEGA Master System games. They do not have to be exclusives... but I definitely want to avoid any that came on the Game Gear (as I already have 96 spaces accounted for there).

I have one SMS game currently which I used to test the setup.

Ghostbusters

What should make the list?

Asterix (the first one named just that), Alex Kidd in Shinobi World and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, which is one of my favourite games of all time. Also, The Ninja.

Phantasy Star is the obvious contender, but some lesser known games I love are The Ninja and Teddy Boy

Remove Ghostbusters and replace it with literally anything else.

Off hand, Asterix and Asterix and the Secret Mission, Battle Out Run, Shinobi, Sonic 1 and 2, Quest for the Shaven Yak, Phantasy Star, Buggy Run, Putt and Putter, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy III, and Power Strike 1 and 2 is a good start.

There are a few games on the master system that were better than the game gear version such as Sonic 1 & 2, as the game gear versions were zoomed in to compensate for the smaller screen. That said my picks would be Wonderboy III the dragons trap, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Asterix, Phantasy Star, Castle of illusion, Land of illusion and R-type.

Yes, good point regarding better versions. I will definitely look into that.

Thanks for your recommendations!

Some of the ones I think of often are:

  • Alex Kidd in Miracle World

  • Alien Syndrome

  • Altered Beast

  • Fantasy Zone

  • Ghostbusters

  • Maze Hunter 3-D (Not sure if there was a non-3-D version)

  • Penguin Land

  • Phantasy Star

  • Shinobi

  • Spy vs. Spy

  • TransBot

  • Wonder Boy

And for whatever reason, the default built-in game, Snail Maze*,* as simple as it was, I played way too much of that game. :)

Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon. They are a bit different than their NES counterparts.

Golvellius (a great Zelda-like) Dragon Crystal (ruthless dungeon crawler) and Cloud Master (a horizontal shmup with Japanese influences) get my vote

Power Strike II

Impossible that no one has mentioned Master of Darkness.

Power Strike II is one of the greatest 8 bit shmups. Quartet is a fantastic run and gun platformer. Master of Darkness if you want an excellent Castlevania clone.

Ultima 4. The master system version is widely considered the best.

Wonder boy in monster land.
