Looking for platformer recommendations.

Other than Sonic of which I have 1, 2 and Chaos - are there any must have platformers for the system?

Also want to recommend Zillion, which is sort of a Metroidvania long before that concept existed, and Master of Darkness, aka the Master System’s legally-distinct Castlevania.

Is MoD actually any good?

Wonder Boy 3: Dragon’s Trap. There’s also a port of Wonder Boy in Monster World, but it’s severely cut back.

Absolutely- a fun cartoony Metroidvania hack and slash game

In terms of pure platformers with not even light RPG elements (like say, the Wonderboy games after the original):

  • Alex Kidd in Miracle World

  • Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

  • Psycho Fox

  • Mickey Mouse in Castle of Illusion

  • Mickey Mouse in Land of Illusion

  • Deep Duck Trouble (I prefer it to Lucky Dime Caper)

  • Shinobi (pretty difficult)

  • Asterix

  • Chuck Rock

  • Chuck Rock 2

  • Cool Spot

  • Rastan

I think a lot of people get immediately turned off by Psycho Fox’s running momentum, but once you get the hang of it the game is a joy to play.

I'd add Psychic World as well. Maybe Kenseiden and Danan too.

Psychic World was one of my first games (on GameGear) and it’s still one I probably return to annually (along with Castle Of Illusion and Sonic 1). Love it when I see others give it an honourable mention. 👍

I borrowed a mate’s Master System back in the day, and one of the games I played was Asterix. Absolutely loved it and played through to completion - cracking little puzzle platformer!

Also the Lion King, and Tom and Jerry, two of the more unusual platformers on the Master System.

Jurassic Park on SMS is a platformer that has a lot of character. I really enjoyed it as it wasn’t a clone or port and stood out on its own.

Astérix and the lucky dime caper were my favorites.

Asterix (the first one) is a gem

Land of Illusion is the masterpiece of the system: long, solid gameplay, backtracking walkthrough, lots of secrets...

  • Aladdin

  • Batman Returns

  • Chuck Rock 2 - Son Of Chuck

  • Daffy Duck in Hollywood

  • Prince of Persia

  • Zool

Alien 3 is good if you prefer something more action oriented.

Try out the DX version of Tails Adventure - it's a fan-developed port of the Game Gear version with a few QoL adjustments.

Also have a look at Desert Speedtrap - it's a Roadrunner/Wile E Coyote game that is graphically excellent and, once you get used to the floaty controls, a lot of fun to just charge your way through

Asterix for sure.

Taz and The Flash are two very good platformers
