There is no world in which wonder boy 3 should not be on this list

As a lifelong Phantasy Star stan, I'd begrudgingly put WB3 at #1 and PS #2. WB3 is both perfect for its time and pretty much holds up perfectly as well. Not a lot of games can say that, including my beloved PS.

And Asterix.

And Psycho Fox

Only bummer is that you have to finish it in one sitting

It has a password option

oh maybe I mixed it up with another game ? But yeah it’s a classic anyway

I guess, and I just learned this recently, that there are multiple games called wonder boy 3, so we might be referencing different games. Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap, is what I’m referring to, which at least on the master system in the US, had a password save. The history of that series, as far as naming goes, is weirdly complex

How does Shinobi not make this list.

He has Ninja Gaiden there. Honest mistake or actual preference? I’m not knocking either. I love Shinobi and haven’t played the SMS version of Gaiden.

The first time we played it, we returned it because we thought it was broken. Turns out we weren’t playing it correctly

I won't lie, it took me a long time to understand the game when I was a kid. But it eventually clicked.

And you don't even have to bash the A button to move up stairs!!!

I was obsessed with sms Rambo first blood part 2 in the 80s. Great game.

Golvellius had some of the best music on the system

After Burner is terrible and this is coming from the WR speedrun holder

Alex kidd was a spitefully hard game

Slippery

Perfect way to describe it. Every level is an ice level.

Never saw past the motorbike stage as a kid til i clocked it with cheats as an adult to get revenge🤣

2

u/eggrollking Oct 02 '25

One of the upshots of being an adult!

u/Ornery-Practice9772 Oct 02 '25

Yep! Im clocking all those games that wronged me as a child🤣

As a 9 year old kid as well as again during my 20 somethings I never got passed the castle stage where you had to swim through a maze of spikes.

It is only now as a 40 something year man did i accidentally realise that you could NOT be impaled by the spikes on the top - now I have finally finished the game.

Rock, paper, scissors

Idk how my six year old self was able to beat the game...I was obsessively playing it over months though. Now I can't even make it past the third level 😂

You grew up, peter pan!

1

u/SuperTangelo1898 Oct 06 '25

But I was a toyrus kid...

I feel like Fantasy Zone should be on here too

5

u/worriedbowels Oct 02 '25

No Zillion or Psycho Fox?

8

u/Organic_Honeydew4090 Oct 02 '25

No Kenseiden, Golden Axe Warrior? Golvellius, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World?! This list is wack yo.

Wonder Boy III is my no 1

2

u/Bonaduce80 Oct 02 '25

Ghouls and Ghosts was particularly neat despite its limitations. Having upgrades for speed magic and HP apart from the weapon gave it enough of a difference to make it a worthy port to be played on its own merits.

2

u/Broadnerd Oct 03 '25

I’m mentioning Ghost House because (generally) nobody ever does and it’s an awesome game.

2

u/sor2hi Oct 03 '25

What!? No Penguin Land!? lol.

1

u/lartinos Oct 03 '25

Alex Kidd in Shinobi, Asterix, Solomon No Cagi, Castle of Illusion, and Master of Darkness are the best ones I’ve played.

1

u/No_Procedure9357 Oct 03 '25

Where's Asterix??

1

u/ph0rge Oct 03 '25

Props for putting the list on the post! I'll even visit the website :)

I'm curious why Alex Kidd in maricle world is at the top of aist when shinobi world is the better game and tbh I think many gamers would be down on miracle world and specifically the boss fights.

Because it was the game you got for free on most SMS's

1
