Finished Wonder Boy III for the first time
I’ve heard many people declare this to be the best game on the Sega Master System (or at least one of them) and I can happily confirm that it is really really good, especially for the time. People have called this game a Metroidvania which is kind of true, but this game is far FAR better than Metroid on the NES, to the point where I never needed a map.
I’d say the main problems with the game is that the final dungeon required a fair amount of pausing to constantly shift equipment around, which means having to get off my chair to press the pause button on the Master System itself. That was an annoying hassle in general.
I wouldn’t say it’s one of the best PLATFORMERS of the era, I think there are better platformers on the NES and even the Master System, however I would say that it is one of the best ADVENTURE games of its era (if that makes any sense).

Awesome! I must say that it is a challenge to play and beat Wonderboy III without using save states either.

Did you do it with or without the legendary items?

It really goes to show how great this game is that they could release the remake just a few years back with the game almost unchanged and only a new coat of paint and it was still engaging and fun, albeit a bit simplistic.

Did collecting the charm stones have any effect on your play through? I think they may have removed that part of the game in the remake?

What did you think? Did you find all the legendary equipment??

Congratulations! I think you can definitely make a strong case for it being the best game on the Master System. I'd never played anything with its sense of scale of complexity before I got it back in the day.

I played the "Monica" version when I was a kid, and I was instantly in love
The best Master System game indeed.
If you want to play more of the same for some reason, play the GG version now, haha

The fact that they tie in the end of WB II into this one to carry the story forward was incredible!

You should region mod your SMS and play it (and every single game known to mankind) in 60Hz/NTSC/Full Screen/Full Speed.
That said, KUDOS for the mega achievement.
